Alan wasn't a pop star, he was a musicians musician. He made Go West better by his skill and imagination, and he was highly respected by his peers in the music world. He was also Kate Bush's guitarist of choice for 10 years. He matched Boon Gould in Level 42 even though by then he knew he was dying. He was brilliant, nice, brave and dignified to the end. I can't say that about many people.

I was deeply "in love" with Richard Drummie in 1985.. .some would say "crush" but I would say "true love" :) He and Peter Cox became became part of my circle of friends in real life and I'm so pleased that they are as lovely in real life as they were as posters on my wall. Innocence will always be my most favourite track.. but this whole "The Tube" performance is special.. and is my "go to" viewing when the world is harsh, or I'm feeling "not great".. or for when I just want to be back in 1985. Thank you Richard and Peter... See again soon (and it's my turn to buy the round) Nx

This is got to be one of the best live sets ever on TV . It was 34 years ago (yikes), but the music is still better than today. Peters voice is great, as are the gorgeous backing singers. Alan Murphy steals it with effortless brilliance, he's almost casual about the way he rattles off the solos . Tony's drumming is awesome. Eye To Eye is my favourite Go West song and the band do it justice. Thank God for videotape. R.I.P: Alan Murphy 1953-1989.

Can't believe that this was uploaded nine years ago and has only just found me! 😁 I'm a big Go West fan (ever since I was a kid); I have all of their stuff. Peter Cox definitely has one of my favourite voices in music; it carries so much punch, even at the high end. Blessed to have seen him perform live twice; once on a solo tour and once with Go West. He's still got it! 😄 Noticed lots of love for Alan in the comments. I'm a big Level 42 fan as well so he definitely fell inside my radar back in the day; a talented musician with some distinctive signature sounds. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

I was on the band crew. We knew the strike was likely to happen so they drafted in a bunch of students from Newcastle Poly as an audience and we shot the lot as a camera rehearsal the day before just in case. Come 6pm Friday, the electricians pulled the plug and they played the tape instead. It was the best break the band ever got.

Watching Peter Cox during Innocence in particular, reacting to Alan Murphy's improvised fills and vice versa, enjoying playing with each other so much, is an absolute delight. Whilst very different players, the only guitarist to match Alan's ability and musicality with the floating bridge and vibrato bar, IMHO, was the late, very great Jeff Beck... and that really is saying something as anyone who has played a Floyd-Rose type will attest. But in Go West, Alan's rhythm playing is so well chosen and apposite in their great songs as well that there is no popular music which actually gives me greater pleasure and guarantees to lift my mood. Thanks Andrew Barry McMurdock

Not quite. There was an electricians strike on the cards, so the band recorded their entire live set on the Thursday camera rehearsals, just in case the show didn't go out, and sure enough, at 5.55 Friday night they pulled the plug, so a Dire Straits film was run the first half, and the Go West tape for the second.

Every live show I have seen of them it seems like his guitar and vocals are turned completely off. He turns his head halfway through the background vocals or doesn’t finish singing the lines most times. Not to bag on the guy but something was off.

Same here, he looked like Andrew Ridgeley. About this time, even including the hairdo.

He was given a bunch by Aria, but he hated them because they kept going out of tune.

I have the earlier model (83) RS Esprit, that one does tend to slightly detune fairly often when you strike the strings with impact. So I do agree, not sure if it did that from new, but it happens for me at times. All over, great guitar! I don't know if other later model Aria Pro ii superstrats had that issue. Hopefully was resolved if so.

Alan Murphy solo in SOS brilliant as usual but visually destroyed by some small minded editor/ producer or whatever these twats are called.

Exactly what I think of them! Good to see I'm not alone, pretty much my two favourite bands. Saw Go West recently playing with Nik Kershaw in the Waterfront Belfast and they were absolutely rocking, going to see them next month again at the Grove and they are playing a full set/headliner this time so cannot wait. Also seeing Toto on their 40 trips around the sun tour next year so I can die happy after all of this :) This particular Go West lineup can't be touched though, shame I will never witness it in the flesh.
