I bought this lens when it first came out in 2009. Still have it. A great lens. Always was, and always will be.

Excellent review and super informative, thank you. I'm an audio/video person who's just bought a Z Cam E1 MFT video camera specifically for close interview type stuff. I think your video has proven that this lens is the perfect choice for very close video work in confined spaces. I especially like all those field of view examples you've done, again, super informative examples. And thanks for the heads-up on those potential minor issues, none of which are really negatives for me personally, as the positives about this lens are so overwhelming. Cheers, Dave.

good, all information I need for 7-14mm. I worried about f4 aperture for indoor shoot, i guess need to bump up to 1600 ISO to compensate for that

The 4k with the 7mm looks great. I really can't decide between the G7 or the Canon 77D with a wide angle lens.

thank you! do you use lens filter for shooting outdoor? sky (and sometimes faces) on my outdoor shots are too bright.
@derekaggs117 жыл бұрын
andivax I don't use this lens with a filter since it doesn't have threads for one. If you're blowing out skies or faces, try dialing in a little negative exposure comp.

Apparently, Olympus has a 7-14mm F4 (not to be confused with the F2.8 PRO version). I couldn't find anyone doing a comparison of these two (like for like 7-14mm F4). Any thoughts?

I had this lens but sold it, having no filter thread killed it for my type of photography especially as I love to use a polarizer, 10 stop nd grad and reverse grad. Great lens but as you say, it does have some limitations.
@derekaggs117 жыл бұрын
Howie Mudge Photography I hear ya! My ND filter fun stops at the wide end of my 12-60 kit. Did you replace it with another UWA?
@mudgie0697 жыл бұрын
Not as yet. I've got the Samyang 7.5mm fisheye which I can de-fish if needed. I may in the mean time buy the Olympus 9-18mm as it has a filter thread. Not as wide as the Panasonic but still wide enough for landscapes.

at 6"20-6"21 i clearly notice flickering aperture while you're zooming. Would you be kind enough to make a dedicated test on that? One case with fixed iso of your choice another with auto-iso on. I'm considering buying this lens over the 8-18 (that is said having resolved any flicker issue for all Elmarit new lenses). Like a lot your channel. Thank you :)

I'm torn between this lens and the Oly 7-14mm F2.8 PRO. The 2.8 would sure help in dimmer environments. I consider F4 an outdoor or good light only lens for video. Thanks for the video.
@Duckstalker13407 жыл бұрын
jeffhalebopp The Olly is way faster and better in low light for indoor, e.g. weddings. It’s also more expensive.
@artistjoh4 жыл бұрын
jeffhalebopp The aperture difference is only 1 stop, but the size and weight difference is huge, so I would base the decision more on weight and price than aperture. Also the lens is better on Panasonic cameras than Oly so your camera should be a factor if you have an Olympus camera.

100% beginner here. So the price you paid would be about 5700 SEK according to google. Would you still recommend picking it up (used but as new) for around 4000 SEK/around 500 US today? Just got a GH4 on the cheap to learn on along with a 14-42mm (only lens so far but that one cost 200 SEK so wasn't too bad) and will use it mostly for film. Would this be worth adding or is there a similar budget alternative?

Nice review, bro. You make me want that lens. I started out with primes (Olympus 12, 25, and 45mm) but since I started shooting videos every week, I quickly realized what a pain in the ass they are to change out all the time. So I recently got a Lumix 12-35mm which is much better for my run and gun style. I wouldn't mind getting an ultra wide and a telephoto lens to finish out my collection. I really prefer lenses with OIS though since my G7 doesn't have IBS. Again, great review. You've given some things to think about.
@derekaggs117 жыл бұрын
Temporal Mix Productions It is, and that's part of the reason I went with this lens over the Laowa. Being bound to one rather extreme focal length and having to change lenses slows down workflow, especially considering the Laowa is totally manual. My only manual lens is the Mitakon 25/0.95.
@Temporalmixproductions7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I film myself a lot so autofocus is a necessity for me.

tvlover81 I'm using C-AF with face detection for vlogging. It still hunts from time to time, particularly when I look away from the camera and it loses lock on my face.

You can look add Olympus 7-14mm f2.8 pro lens?
@derekaggs117 жыл бұрын
If I had one I'd be glad to! It looks like it compares pretty favorably to the Panasonic 7-14/4, offering a stop faster aperture and weather sealing. Optically, both lenses are excellent. The Olympus is nearly double the cost of this lens, however.

There is a fish eye lens from Panasonic that is 8mm, but this goes down to 7mm, wouldn't that be even more fish eye at 7mm? or are fish eye lenses completely different.
@derekaggs117 жыл бұрын
+Michael McGill They are. The 7-14mm is rectilinear while the 8mm is fisheye, which will have heavy distortion.
@ericofukushiro6 жыл бұрын
did you test the 8-18mm? if so, which one do you prefer?
@derekaggs116 жыл бұрын
Erico I haven’t had a chance to test one yet. It’s WR, takes filters and is better built. The range is more useful on the long end as well. The 7-14 is smaller, wider, still very sharp and cheaper.

My Canon ef-s 10-22 uses a 77mm screw type filters.
@GregBrammah7 жыл бұрын
Mel Enriquez which is equivalent of 16mm at wide end.
@melenriquez89857 жыл бұрын
Greg Brammah still 10mm with a screw filter. Do not confuse the conversion with the mm of the lens. 10mm is 10mm whether it is in a ff or a m4/3.
@GregBrammah7 жыл бұрын
Mel Enriquez The point in the video was that any lens wider than about 15mm equivalent seems to be the focal length where screw in filters stop being possible. Hence, the Olympus 9-18 (18-36 equivalent) does accept screw in whereas both m43 7-14s (14-28) don't. Similarly, in your APSC setup with a 1.6 crop factor the 10mm of your 10-22 is 16mm Equivalent. i.e. 1mm narrower than the 15mm (ish) cut off point. I concede that that a Sigma 10-20 is 15mm equivalent on Nikon's though, so it's more of an observation than a hard and fast rule. I think the original point stands.
@melenriquez89857 жыл бұрын
Greg Brammah that is the mistake of many. They confuse the focal length and angle of view. For example, my fz 1000 has a 25-400mm equiv if it is 35mm full frame. But it's likely has a focal length of 6mm give o take a few mm. But it takes a 63mm screw filter. What you should use is FIELD OF VIEW of 14mm in 35mm full frame. As I said, 10mm is 10mm regardless of sensor size. But field of view is different depending the size of the sensor. This is often confused by many. Use FOV and you won't be ambiguous.
@GregBrammah7 жыл бұрын
Mel Enriquez No mistake, the video explained it quite clearly. Your mistake is that you claimed originally that your 10mm took filters which missed the point of the video. In terms fov in your canon APSC it is 16mm.

So no Lowa 7.5mm ?
@derekaggs117 жыл бұрын
Sooovann Nope. I decided to pass on the Laowa, even though it's cheaper, faster and takes filters. I have a trip to Yellowstone in about a month and I absolutely had to have an UWA for that trip. Venus Optics seems to be dragging their feet on the release of this lens for some reason. Even if the Laowa launched today there's a slim chance I'd have it on time for the trip. Also, there are usability advantages to having a fully electronic UWA zoom over a fully manual UWA prime. It's nice not having to change lenses when I want a more "normal" perspective, which is what this lens gives towards the 14mm long end.
