Oh, well. Now, did you ever write anything that was like SO embarassing and put it on the internet? Maybe I did. Maybe that's the theme of tomorrow's video.

I love having poetry explained to me! Because otherwise, most of the time, I don't always get it and I think "Just say what you mean!" But then some people use words and language so much better than I could ever hope to and then I'm like, "Okay, well done sir/madame."

I love that we'll be listening to poetry in walking book club because really, poetry is meant to be spoken and listened to, not read. It's much more powerful when you listen to it with its cadence and inflections. Some of my favorite poets are Billy Collins, Frank O' Hara, Nikki Giovanni, and Henry Rollins. Can't wait to see what kinds of poetry you enjoy!

Analysing poetry is just, ugh, so good - SO GOOD. Poetry is an art form that I truly think benefits most from analysis. People think it's boring and like being back in school, but guys, seriously, you will get so much more out of poetry from looking into its background and context and use of imagery and what the poet was trying to convey. I mean, I thought Keats was pretty okay but then I studied his works and the idea of negative capability totally blew my mind and later helped me come to terms with, like, life and human existence, while recovering from a really rough time in my life. Poetry is like any other art form - you're not going to like all of it, and yeah, some of it can be boring, just like some of it can be so freaking cool. But you're also not gonna know what you like and don't like until you can really start understanding it. I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED FOR ANALYSIS AND POETRY. ANALYSING TEXTS CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING. IT'S SO COOL.

And now I'm obsessed with you. I started watching MDK in college, then got too busy to keep up with anything on KZbin, and now I'm an English teacher. In an effort lately to find things that make me laugh and make my brain feel less oozy (yep - that's a clinical term), I came back to KZbin for a break from the drama of work life. I found MDK again, then this channel, this video, and now I'm going to start doing this Walking Book Club thing with you. Hannah Hart and English readings?! My two favorite things!!! Thanks for sharing. xoxo

My college Honors English teacher told us to keep a journal of everything we felt ,and he was saying how your feelings in the present time aren't going to be there later, so its good sometimes to look back and reflect on how far you have come. So since then i have been keeping a journal and its really helped me in the past 4 yrs up till now things are really hard for me.Its nice to write down my feelings through the happy and hard times

I'm not big on audio books, but I LOVE Walt Whitman, and I'm glad to see that you're making the effort to give his writing more context so it's more enjoyable for the (for lack of a better term) "less savvy" reader. I feel like too often people write him off as being self indulgent and superfluous, but he was a remarkable and kind man. Anyway, I'm fangirling a bit so I'll stop now. :D

My favorite poet is Richard Brautigan; I love his collection of short stories/poems, "Revenge of the Lawn." It's even more insightful and meaningful when you learn about his background and the time and setting he was writing in. He loved to write about San Francisco too!! He definitely inspired me to write more of my own poetry :) Love this idea for WBC

My poetry class in college studied a lot of Whitman because the professor was doing an intensive class on him at the same time. He became one of my heroes! Also, I would also argue that we never truly lost our love of drawing on walls, petroglyphs just became graffiti and who knows what poetry will become! Hopefully it will remain as emotionally charged and sensual. God, I miss bumming around the poetry section late at night when my roommate had her boyfriend over.... Definitely going to check this out when I get my next Audible credit!

I took two poetry classes in college and loved it. We had a very small group for the second course and we are pretty close by the end of the term. We'd often have really deep meta discussions and then when classes was over laugh about how we were supposed to just go out and off to our next activities in life after spending two hours discussing what rain can mean, or the thought of light or why the detail of an oak is more startling that saying a pine. Poetry is a lot to take in but super great! One I would recommend to you Hannah is Life on Mars by Tracy K. Smith. Her poems are very lovely. Wrote a paper about her once. :)

i think doing a lot of poetry in gcse english lit has really changed the way I look at poems. i used to think they were boring, not worth studying, worse than shakespeare etc., but really deeply analysing a whole bunch of like war poems and romantic poem and stuff has really made me kinda love it. like, i really liked dulce et decorum est, and the manhunt, and ozymandias, and afternoons, and hawk roosting, and definitely my experience of doing gcse english lit with a class of intelligent people who want to learn really made me enthusiastic about poetry for the first time in my life.

Reading poetry can be an amazing, intuitive, emotional experience but I think sometimes it really does help to have context in poetry and to understand the poem's place in time. I teach poetry and creative writing in very low socio-economic/high crime areas where the kids have seen more 'real-life' drama than I can know, and I find poetry has a way of connecting myriad human life experiences and pulling them into a succinct word-moment. I like to tell the kids that reading poetry is like being a detective and finding all the clues that the poet has left for us to decipher the code and understand the poet's intent. They love being detectives :-)
