Thank you very much! I am new in playing clarinet. I had problem with low E or any low notes, I blew it but none came out, it was only air. Now, I know that I did not put pressure to the reed. see 2:42!!!

Thank you for the video. I am getting back into playing my clarinet are not having played since high school (37 years, yikes). Joined a orchestra and have been struggling with intonation and instrument failure. Some I now know was a reed issue. Looks like I may need a new instrument. A few keys loose their ability to close all the way quite often. The nice instrument repair guy has not charged me the last few times. Any suggestions?

I suggest you get someone to help you look for any air leaks within your instrument. However, I would, as an intermediate player transitioning to an advanced player, I would recommend getting a new instrument entirely and getting used to that.

Hi Nancy, Good for you, returning to your clarinet and congratulations on joining an orchestra. It sounds like fun. If you have a ptofessional instrument, you might consider an overhaul. I, too, decided to return to my clarinet after a 40 year hiatus. I found a Buffet Specialist and had my R13 overhauled. My clarinet plays beautifully, at least as good as when it was, brand new, while I can maintain a good embouchure, that is! The cost of my overhaul was nearly 3 times the cost of my clarinet in the early 70s. The work was impeccable. There were some changes that I didn't expect and would have preferred to forego them, but they were minor in nature. The cost of the overhaul was less than 1/3 of the cost of a new Buffet R13.

You need to first invest in a really good mouthpiece vandoren makes many great mouthpieces there are several professional musicians playing on the mire 5 lire 13 it's around $100 you will notice a difference in your tone and it's a nation immediately

Follow Martin Frost in Sabina Meyer. You have to listen to good clarinets to know how you're supposed to sound. I also quit after you many years after high school I joined the Navy. And then got out I became a chef and we had a daughter and I started getting her interested in piano and I picked up the clarinet again as well so I went from 84 to 2003 without playing. And I also joined the Castle Rock town band. I was lucky enough to know the professor of clarinet at the Lamont School of music in Denver. I took a few lessons from him and my abilities from when I was younger started to come back very quickly. I'm sorry this is so long anyway I got nearly a full scholarship to Lamont School of music after about eight months of practicing.

Alexey, I watched a few of your videos today for the first time. Congratulations. They are very good and I appreciate the amount of time and thought you have put into them and your explanations are very well presented and clear. I tried to click on your contact address you supplied in the note, but the URL did not work. Is there another contact address?

very informative and thoughtful video. I'll definitely be applying this technique in my practice time. I'll especially be applying them in the coming days while I'm getting used to a new instrument. Additionally, I would like to ask if there are any embouchure characteristics that would cause flat throat tones? every other note on this instrument is well in tune or at least close; however, G, G#, A, and Bb are averaging 20 and 25 cents flat.
@goalexey
@goalexey 7 жыл бұрын
Yes - those throat notes are a bit flat on my instrument, plus it depends on the mouthpiece. On Pyne it was the worst - really flat. I tend to use additional fingerings to bring notes up in pitch. Biting won't really raise the intonation much. As for embouchure - I will cover a couple concepts in the next video. Should come out in a week.

goalexey thank you for the reply! I'll definitely keep that in mind. May a reed that is too weak cause flatter throat tones?

When you use a Viotti German system mouth + White MAster Vandoren it gives some intonation problems on the French Boehm system clarinet. Ever tired the reform boehm with German bore Wurlitzer or Dietz?

Does the barrel you use have 65mm? I'm using a 65mm, and if I close it completely, my tuning is a little higher at 440hz, do I have to ''relax my mouthpiece'' (the mask) at all to achieve 440hz tuning with a 65mm barrel or is it practically impossible?
@ilijasretenovic4795
@ilijasretenovic4795 4 жыл бұрын
I'm playing on 66 mm barrel, and I still tune to 442 or 441. Regular intonation for clarinetist is 441. If you still want to get that 440, try pulling your barrel up a bit, this will make the instrument longer and automaticly the sound will be lower

Well, many people have different images of the ideal tone. And that's perfectly fine. Imagine we all would play with the same tone. How dull!

hi Alexy. Thank you so much. I have realized that I talk sometimes like nasal voice you have shown (not like SpongeBob but close enough XD). May be I´m doing the same thing with the instrument. It was a fantastic explanation of what I do when I do wrong. lol. A question: What tuner software you recomend for apple MacOS? Thanks again! PD: forgive my bad english.

how much does the instrument affect your sound? thank you
@goalexey
@goalexey 7 жыл бұрын
Model and manufacturer of an instrument does affect the overall tone quality, but it's more of a character. It does not add or subtract from the actual technique of controlling the sound and its formation. Mouthpiece, brand of reeds, their strength and how you form your sound is much more important factor.

Congratulations Alexy, you are an artist and also a virtuoso player. Just one question : Re your Viotto mouthpieces, are they the German models with a close opening and long lay and with the U shaped bore ? Also with the lrger tenon ? I have quite a few of these and they adapt well to my Buffets, but I had to modify the barrel to accomodate the larger tenons. Is this your case ? And do you have the Number of the mpce ? I have many from many years ago(around 15 years)got to know Heinz Viotto quite well, a great person. Txs for your answer Alexy.

Can you recommend a good app for my phone to us as a tuner for Bb clarinet? There is so much crap out there, I have no idea. It's okay if it costs as long as it has no ads and it works well.
