One on how to train goannas around farms/properties would be great. Had one before the fires that would hunt rats etc around the chicken coops. Unfortunately I haven't seen since. A young one Unfortunately has taken to eating my chooks instead. Initially the roosters kept it away but as its got bigger it's upgrading from chick's to hens..... It's not normal times and wild life is still out of balance. Driving it off isn't working it just comes back later and gets one. Unfortunately it's bigger now and bad habits are set. I didn't give it the time it needed when it was young. I've even had a young possim hiding over night in the caravan roof looking terrified. I used to have wallabies and wombats mow my lawn at night there not doing that any more either. A lager wallabie is starting to come but very flighty. It hasn't attacked me but getting between it and it's food I'm worried it's only a matter of time. We're building the wrong relationship.

I have sat in a living room near Mallacoota with half a dozen fully grown goannas lounging around. The tribe came up the week before. The smaller ones kept to the slopes away from the house, but the older ones came in and licked flies off the glass doors. I never saw any aggression towards a person. As for their climbing skills, goannas fall and break bones, which heal. They can't climb downwards so they let go and grab, half sliding half falling. They are not skilled climbers. The house owner threw out a couple of egg shells in the back. Four or five goannas started flicking them up in the air to get the remaining egg. This went on for ages, long after any eggy material was available. Play? Looked like it.

Tree goannas are excellent climbers. I've seen them literally run down a tall tree after raiding a cockatoo's nest.

Australia is an enchanting place with all of its extreme wildlife...I would not be able to sleep at night, pee without extreme fear of a snake climbing up the toilet or exit my house without an Aussie wildlife officer right beside me. Total freak out.

2:40ish well speaking of miniature dragons. Theres a reptilian species that actually kinda looks like a small wyvern. Draco volans I think is once such species of winged reptilians. Theres another odd looking thing people call lil dragons to. But for me this is closest look

Energy = Force Times Mass. Their mass may be a bit slighter than some, but OMG the force that tail can develop... I've never met a goanna. But, I know force. And I can see just what strength they have by what Dude is doing to the Waitress's ability to walk a straight line. And I don't blame the Goanna. He's been conditioned to associate people and food. Which is EXACTLY WHY: "Picnics and wildlife don't mix. Don't feed wildlife..." Unless you want to attract wildlife. IF YOU WANT TO ATTRACT WILDLIFE, be careful of the wildlife you attract. My favorite story about feeding wildlife comes from Yellowstone Park. Watched a man feeding a GRIZZLY bear marshmallows, by hand, as his wife took pictures. After a few pictures, he got bored, so, he stuck the bag of marshmallows behind his back, and pretended they were all gone. Grizzly has nose. Grizzly knows dude is lying. Grizzly stands up, raises a paw, and bares (bears? hee hee) their claws. Dude wets his pants and dives into his car. And locks the door. Leaving his wife and kids outside. DON'T FEED THE BEARS!!! Of ANY species!!! Edit: Well, ok, if they are small bears, 5-25 ponds, with pointy ears and go "Meow," feed as many as you can. And then trap them for TNR! Keep in mind, though, when you feed cats, you are also attracting prey animals. As well as those that prey on those prey, AND ON CATS.

'Goanna' like many other words, is not Aboriginal. It came from the Americas with Californian gold prospectors and we adopted it. The word they brought was a corruption of the Spanish word, 'Iguana' meaning (big) lizard. Other non Aboriginal words are 'Nullabor' Latin for 'no trees' and 'Jakaranda' is indigenous, but from the Guarani language of Paraguay in South America where it is a native from. 'Cockatoo' is a Dutch word and 'Jabiru' is Portuguese from Brazil. There are more, but these are the main ones.

Komodos are also the most intelligent. If hand-raised, they are quite docile. Proof are in the many videos of zoo Komodos.

Saw a kid badly bitten by a goanna while camping. (67 stitches). His parents were trying to get the goanna to go away by banging saucepan lids when he attacked. Best to just let them wander around and they will eventually disappear. Like any wildlife, just leave it to its own devices. You are in their space. It's a wild animal.

@@lcampbell9837 The child got bitten because the parents freaked out banging stuff around and this in turn panicked the lizard which then struck out at the nearest thing to it, it could very well had been one of the adults that got bit. Instead of freaking and trying to scare it away they should just have let the thing travel on through after checking things out. They are very very intelligent for a reptile and very inquisitive, they will notice things most other reptiles wont. They will also interact with people in ways you wouldnt expect, when in captivity they will actually seek out their owner for hugs and sleep in laps while the owner is watching T.V. Wild Monitors can be lured into following you away from the picnic or camp site with food , staying just out of reach and showing it the food and moving away when it comes forward, letting it have a nibble of whatever your luring it with now and then to keep its interest focused on you. Once lured a sufficient distance throw the bait ahead of it a good distance but not to far for it to lose sight of, it will run to the bait while you exit back to the picnic or camp. Usually it will finish eating the bait and then wander off looking for its next great adventure. In the rare case it turns back ( which can happen if you didnt lure it far enough) just make sure that everything is picked up and put away where hopefully it cant smell it. If you do this it will then just wander away out of lack of interest!

The tail wouldn't come off a crocodile either. Actually, it was a pretty silly thing to do.😮 It could possibly have bitten her with its big, sharp teeth, broken her ankle hitting her with its tail or lunged at her and cut her legs very badly with its massive claws. 😕

My 4-year-old son was feeding one, in Brisbane, mistook he finger for chicken. He is 30 now, he survived. Bigger than one in the restaurant. I saw a skeleton in a tree once, somebody had shot the goannas whilst it was climbing a tree.

I visited a state park and camped there (in a travel trailer--not a tent). There were wildlife lectures and one was about the alligators there. The Ranger explained why feeding is bad. When he left, people showed up and started throwing in raw chicken wings. The gators were not scared or shy of humans or pets at all. And sure enough, that week we were there, An alligator killed someone's dog in the campground. Don't feed wildlife and for goodness sake don't tether a dog and leave it alone--even at your campsite.

Where my daughter went to kindergarten, they had a poster on the fridge showing which foods are "sometimes foods" and which foods are "every day foods". Kid you not, Goanna was on the list for everyday food!

Lizards can be very cool and very interactive and even show emotion towards their owners in captivity especially Goannas or Monitors, they are as intelligent as birds, and very inquisitive, and pay very close attention to what's happening around them. They can be taught to respond in certain ways just like birds and small mammals, to say you distrust them only shows that you know that very little about them. They are no more or less trustworthy than any other animal. As a matter of fact I'd trust a Monitor over a Hog feral, wild or domestic any day. And Kangaroos can be quite viscous as well, and let's not even talk about Cassowarys the most evil foul tempered bird alive and the most dangerous, when a Cassowary attacks it actually TRIES to kill you!!

At my place, you sometimes see birds dive bombing the goannas. I expect the goannas eat the eggs from all the birds' nests, so I get that the birds wouldn't be happy to see them around.
