I love my city. Nothing like it. Oakland has always been a Black Mecca, and truly Revolutionary.

***** I love Souly Vegan a restaurant not to far from Ms. Ollies. A Diva's Closet is my favorite Boutique, the clothes are chic and the buyer only orders ten of everything, so you know that you will not see your outfit on the next person while you are out, and they change items each week. Oaklandish is another boutique with all the Oakland branded garb. Lake Merritt is my favorite place in Oakland. We also have Redwoods here, hiking is amazing and the view is unbeatable at the top of any Oakland hill. Priceless. We have so many art galleries. The Oakland African Diaspora Museum is a must see. Marcus Books is a staple in my life. The Black Rep Theatre always has great events. Yoshi's Jazz and Supper Club has everything you want, Great performers every weekend and amazing sushi. Everrett and Jones Barbeque is famous all over the country. Oakland has so much culture and history, it is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. I am proud to be from here. If you ever come here, please allow me to show you around as well. Peace to you.

Knowledge Goddess I live in Fresno and travel to Oakland for jazz shows at Yoshi's 6-8 times a year. I Always pass by Souly Vegan on my way to the club and have read some of the Yelp and TripAdvisor reviews on the restaurant. I will make plans to eat there on my next Jack London Square trip in April, as well as Ms. Ollies on a future trip. :-)

I like that you're highlighting areas that are just as fly. Ideas for places to visit for a weekend trip.

I really like this "Black Mecca" series MadameNoire is doing, and love the STL video. However, as someone whose from Oakland, I can tell you that Oakland stopped being a Black mecca about 10 years ago. Gentrification has really driven a lot of Black folks out of Oakland, and the once proud majority Black city is quickly turning into a wasteland for hipster Whites and tech workers. Oakland lost its soul when it lost so many of its Black residents. I mean, even many of the Soul Food restaurants out here have many non-Black employees which in my opinion takes away the essence of a Soul Food restaurant. If you decide to visit Oakland, visit it because you want to visit a new place, but DON'T expect a Black mecca. Those days are sadly long gone.

Lets Keep it real if you know Oakland history. Oakland was majority a White town until the late 60's and 70's Blacks where mostly segregated in West Oakland and some parts of the North also Latinos and Asians as well. As White flight happened Black began to become the majority but Oakland was still diverse Latinos and Asians and Other nationalities grew in numbers as well during this time. But Blacks did leave a mark on Oakland's history and Culture during the 70's 80's and 90's but now because of gentrification Blacks are being displaced from Oakland at record numbers something most people don't want to talk about.

Goapele is a beautiful lady, however I'm not feeling this short blonde look on her.

+Topazhoney I agree. makes her look washed out. I would prefer short and very dark like her natural hair.
