All goats being feed should be feed alfalfa instead of grain. Alfalfa is high in protein where grain isn't. Second alfalfa grows muscles grain produces fat. Fat is waist in goats unlike cattle so get discounted for fat. I always tag day before I ship. The Arizona herd gets tagged a day or two before because they also have to have a brand check. Brand inspector has to check each for a brand before they can be shipped so tag and have to shave a few to see brand. @@addisonranch that doe has been that way all her life she don't drive hardly at all. My son showed her. She won market and breeder almost every show. Ya I use the metal scrappy tag definitely not as easy to use as a flex tag

Growth rate was about the same. The crosses are thicker but shorter. I couldn’t tell for sure if the buyers preferred them over the straight Spanish.

Do you have a grading system on the does ability to raise kids?

Yes if they survive, raise a kid and don’t cause any problems they stay.😁. This is as long as I can identify them and as long as I don’t think it’s my fault. Doelings get 2 years to start I figure about 50% do it the first year.

Where is south tx? Best prices in tx are closer to san angelo, tx. Also best time to take them here in tx is December and may. I understand If you can't hold them that long but if you can great. What I do for mine and I tend to average 3.50 lb is wait tell time to take them and moms have free range alfalfa as soon as they kid so the kids know the taste same with pellet feed.

Hey Robert!! I took them to Goldthwaite. What type of goats are you taking to the sale and what do they typically weigh? If you don’t mind sharing? 3.50 at 60lbs would be a dream come true depending on inputs.🤞

@addisonranch spanish boer cross average weight has been between 55-60lbs but I take them to hamilton

@addisonranch I'm still growing my heard so I don't get rid of any. Just males. As far as replacements you do it the same way you would cattle either track what bucks are on them or buy them. The bucks I am running this yr threw 98% females so far 12 out of 14 are girls. Still have 4 that are pregnant

I’m thinking about when my numbers are up where I want I’ll put my “best” Spanish out for the first 2 weeks then I’ll pull them and put in a terminal cross to sell all the kids by them. That way my most fertile females will be bred by Spanish and I can keep the doelings from them for replacements.

Can you not use electric ID tags?

I don’t know. I plan on checking that but you would still have to bring them in and read all the tags but it may be the best option.
