ARRL's Straight Key Night is a fun 24-hour event spread over New Years eve and day. Starting with the WW2 Paraset (replica built by Paul/W0RW) I make several SKN contacts. Then just for comparison I switch over to today's radio technology using several of my favorite tiny lightweight QRP radios - MTR, ATS4a, KX3, and FX4

Enjoyed the "olde time" signal sounds and the hand keys. Have never participated in SKN, not the right time of day over here in Oz. I have a hand key but rarely use it. Great video, thanks Steve. 73 Andrew vk1da

This was absolutely wonderful to watch. I check in with you every once in a while to see good working goats, but the radio history was fantastic to see. Great filming, sir. Jules

Power output of British paraset's ?? Antennae used by agents ? (what configuration) Time spent in training and learning how to use ?

Ade Larsen Hi Ade, I don't know much about the Paraset but it was a low power radio of I would guess 10 W output. The antenna possibly would have been an end fed because it is the easiest to deploy. Training I guess would have not taken too long, these were young people at the time and would have learned fast maybe a matter of weeks of possibly 3 to 4 months , also they would not have been sending very fast possibly an average of 15 to 20wpm. Personally speaking it took me two weeks to reach 25wpm but I did have exposure to Morse as a young child from my uncle who was an RAF WOp during WW2 Sandy

Ade Larsen I've been able to squeeze about 7w into a 24' stealth wire laying on my roof. Yes end fed antennas mainly anything that would radiate and not be seen or create suspicion. From what I've read there was a radio silence during WW2 so it didn't take much of a signal to reach HQ across the channel. As I understand messages weren't sent in the open they were encrypted. BTW there's a great series of WW2 documentaries ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/inizfJ9ojtuXo6M

Great video as always, Steve! But where was Acorn and Barley? Did they "take a break" so Peanut and Boo could star? All the best. Bill, KD8UNA
