It's like those two instruments were meant to be played together, and perfectly in tune with each other. Thanks!

I had no idea until today that there is such a thing as Swedish bagpipes. It's great the music that can be discovered via youtube. Scandinavian folk music, for example...

The amazing thing is that old turkish folks from the north-western parts of Turkey also practise the bagpipes EVEN though these two folks are not related whatsoever. I always thought that the bagpipes were something unique from celtics/scandinavian folks.

Try Bulgarian folk music :) Especially the Rhodopi bagpipe and vocal songs. Just don't get near the "pop-folk"/chalga music from recent years.

Definitely try Azis. xD Apart from Turkish and Balkan folk, bagpipes also exist in Occitan folk songs.

If you've not found them I'd strongly recommend Corvus Corax and Garmarna.

The fascinating thing is that bagpipes are actually a type of instrument that has been a part of *many* cultures across history, going as far back as ancient rome and greece and even egypt, where arguably the principle of using a bag to blow a flute or reed pipe has likely been invented. It's a very diverse and multinational type of instrument.

The nyckelharpa must be beastly to tune!
@kashagizmo
@kashagizmo 10 жыл бұрын
Not as bad as you'd expect. While obviously for optimal sound you'll want it in perfect tune, the Sahlström model of nyckelharpa only has four strings that really "must" be in tune. The rest are merely resonance strings that add to the color of the sound. It takes me about a minute or so to tune my nyckelharpa by ear, unless it's dreadfully out of tune due to temperature shifts or something similar.
@fiedelmina
@fiedelmina 10 жыл бұрын
I don't really agree with kashagizmo: If the sympathetic strings are out of tune, the sound of the instrument gets worse. But since there is the same system as on a guitar for the tuning pegs of the sympathetic strings, they are easy to tune. In my case it takes about 5min.
@kashagizmo
@kashagizmo 10 жыл бұрын
Note that I said 'for optimal sound' - obviously you'll want optimal sound if you have the time. It doesn't really sound out of tune if you skip tuning the sympathetic strings, but the instrument will have a richer, clearer sound if you do bother tuning them properly. Luckily they usually stay in tune rather well in the first place, and as you pointed out, the guitar tuning pegs help a lot with the process. :) The instrument is however playable just by tuning the main strings, something which is handy if you for example have to adapt your tuning quickly to join in a jam session at a festival or something.

Indeed, and also don't forget the bagpipe has a reed, which is very sensitive to humidity. Sure, the strings on a nyckelharpa or any other string instrument are also sensitive to changes in temperature. But you can always tune a string instrument (which usually is quite easy when you have tuning pegs), and then you're good to go. A reed that doesn't work perfectly will make the bagpipe impossible to play.

Thanks, Marcblur. Nothing has been done to the audio at all apart from a bit of noise reduction, so it's very much like it sounded in the hall. I love the blend of strings and pipe - it's amazing.

Tracy They're similar in the horizontal drone and key (i think...) but there're some key ways to distinguish the two. For example; the Uillean pipes have 3 (maybe 4 or more?) drones, this only has one, the Uillean pipes are bellowed, and the chanter has a few differences. :3

Had a few of them bit that evening I decided not to use a mixer and only brought the 414's and the lighting. It was a bit of a mixed bag (camera-wise) and also I was the soloist in the first half of the concert so there was a limit to what I could rig in time.
