According to Arthur C. Clarke's novel, The Overlords look like demons and devils because humanity knew on a subconscious level that humanity will end when they arrived on Earth. Also, the reason the story is called "Childhood's End" isn't just because the children left Earth and indirectly destroyed it, but because The Overlords' mission was to give humanity an evolutionary boost like worker bees tending to The Queen and her Drones/Consorts. I found it odd that the same man who wrote "2001: A Space Odyssey" could tell a tale like this. In the first story, one man evolves but keeps his memories and identity. In this story, children evolve and turn their backs on their world and their memories. Weird.

hi! I read the book...I never got the feeling that humans were being transformed into an "elite" kind of being closer to a king or queen. A transformation, yes, but directed to a very enigmatic unknown goal. They could have been directed to the slaughter house of souls to be eaten by a superior being for instance, I don`t remember the book giving many clues to that end goal. Maybe there are passages I don`t remember, that give clues to that transformation being an evolution leading closer to god or to a superior being?

This was a good story, but it had some serious flaws as an idea. For one, the "event" that destroys the Earth is completely down to Jennifer. It didn't _have_ to happen. It wasn't "inevitable" in the slightest. The demon-esque aliens _could_ have just taken enough kids to start a new version of humans elsewhere, but leave the rest of the planet completely alone. They didn't have to wipe out the original human species at all, they didn't have to make every adult infertile leading to the extinction of them. Nor did they have to wipe out all the different forms of life on Earth who were completely innocent in all of it. They could have just left Earth alone, and taken the kids to another planet the other side of the Galaxy - or even to a completely new Galaxy - it's not like we could do anything about it, nor would we have been able to find them again. That's if this story was _really_ about advancing our evolution in order to save our species. Which I don't think it is. The event that destroys the Earth looks more like an alien harvesting the energy of the planet than "saving" species. The energy certainly wasn't being absorbed by Jennifer, it was going elsewhere. This "God" like Overmind being isn't some force for good, it's just another parasite alien species, but one with super-advanced technology or abilities, that feeds on entire planets and the life-giving "energy" it contains. And it likely only saved the kids to seed another planet it will later feed upon. Perhaps the entire Universe was created as a sort of food farm for this "God" species (or individual).
@Valstein0 Жыл бұрын
It's definitely an old idea, but it still wouldn't make any sense. Why would the molten rock and metal in our planet be any different than one in another planet? Why destroy life at all? And there's magnitudes more energy in a star.

The movie is saying that they can passively destroy a species through superior manipulation over outright military might. Thus serving and further empowering their deity possibly over all others that may exist. This suggests that the war of powers is predominately ideological and more of a cosmic multi dimensional scale. The demons are of course technologically and intellectually far above humanity likely as a complete kardeshev 1 or even 2 civilization. Most superior beings (technologically not morally: their morality is different than our own) present themselves as beings of light and good in order to more effectively control large populations. They see things more clinically than we do. To them, lesser intelligent beings are nothing more than a utility or curiosity to experiment with.
@tylertimson4983 Жыл бұрын
I completely agree with this theory, all it seems to come down to in the end was an extremely powerful being whose really good at manipulating others to do what it wants and is willing to play the long game to get its desired results. The most dangerous enemy is the one who hides behind a smile and fake acts of kindness. Unfortunately with as overwhelming powerful the so called "God" is theres nothing that can be done about it. All we can hope for is time for the kids to find a nice planet and eventually start repopulating it again for afew thousand years before the planet gets harvested again and the cycle repeats itself.

The plot of this movie is overall much like the novel, but several characters are different, and several events depicted in the movie aren't in the novel. Many people don't like the story because it isn't humanistic. Our people, our civilization, our morality, don't triumph. Even the "Overlords" are just slaves. The point of the story is that the universe is much bigger than us, and while we might have an important role in it, it doesn't care what we want. You might as well try to debate a hurricane.

That's pretty much what happened in this movie. Where do you think that energy being harvested from the planet - the same thing that caused it's destruction - was going? Or where those kids were going? Certainly not to a new planet to live a better life. They were consumed, or used to seed other planets for later harvesting. As was the life-giving energy of the planet itself. This "Overmind" - if it did create the Universe as claimed - likely did so as some form of food farm for itself.

Ive read the book and hoped it wouldn't get a movie or miniseries simply because it seemed like it couldn't be done justice. I wasnt aware it was adapted as a miniseries. I'm hesitant to check it after a few things jumped out at me based on this video alone. One, It looks like there's too much emphasis on the twist that they look like demons. It was an interesting but somewhat minor point in the book. They didn't look like demons, rather humans imagined demons looked like overseers. Humanity was a burgioning psychic race and some in the past glimpsed the future where the aliens were present at the literal end time for humanity. When Kerellan reveals himself it had been several decades since the aliens took control and people got used to it and religious institutions had long since collapsed. Two, I don't recall any point were the Jan Roderick character (Milo in this) directly communicated with the overmind. The entity is fairly enigmatic even to the Overseer species who serve it but also use the uplifting of species as an opportunity to study it. Three, there's no hope for a better life for the children because all vestiges of humanity were shed before they were subsumed by the overmind. They are stripped of individuality and only exist as an extension of it by the end. Lastly, what the book leaves you with is that despite humanity's end the most pitiable fates actually belongs to the Overseers species. They are at an evolutionary dead end and will never have an psychic awakening. They are fated to simply administer to species after species as they transcended and become one with a great universal network. Despite seeming so advanced initially they are always left behind. Hopefully the adaptation is true to that sentiment.

Apart from 3 of my 45 years of life, as a lifelong resident of the Upper Midwest in the US, I can confirm that snow indeed has a smell. Don't ask me WHAT it smells like because I can't really compare it to anything. lol Besides, I think it was a censor evading euphemism, for what his mother was seeking from the "salesman" she was negotiating with. @athelwulfgalland Жыл бұрын
@@jasonspades7775 It's not really the same as simply stating that it smells like frozen rain either. Rain kicks up all sorts of different smells from the surrounding area. I live about half a mile from a river & depending on the direction of the wind the rain smells almost "fishy." Other times it smells sort of earthy/dusty because it kicks up dirt/dust after a considerable dry spell or there just isn't much wind. There are other times where it smells similar, but not the same, to freshly cut grass. Now that I know that the smell of freshly cut grass is actually the the plant's chemical signal equivalent to a scream I have to wonder why plants create a chemical signal during a rain? Are they crying out, "Oh! Mana from heaven!"? Is the rain merely kicking up old chemical signals? Dunno... Snow typically has it's own unique smell that's usually sterile of these other intrusive scents. However with strong winds, like during a genuine blizzard, it can add other scents to the storm & the snow that is laid down during it's course. It's a lot more subtle than during rains though. I suddenly remembered the scene from Titanic where a young man whom boasted that he could smell ice. Ice does have a scent but unless you're right up close it's too subtle to detect it & more powerful scents will completely obscure it. Case in point; Brine air as you would encounter at sea or living in a coastal community. Ice nearly always picks up scents from things it is in contact with. The icicles hanging from your roof or the gutters? It'll smell dirty, maybe even oily, from the tar paper/shingles. If you have a freezer that builds up ice take a good sniff of it. You'll find that it's captured scents from food items which you've frozen. I can never distinguish exactly what smell that one is because it's an amalgamation of so many different scents.

The line goes: "I will make you Warlord of all Greece, you will carry my battle standard to the heart of Europa, your Athenian rivals will kneel at your feet if you will but kneel at mine". A rather generous offer, even Leonaides seemed to "consider" it for a brief moment. But he knew, once his usefulness as King of Sparta came to an end, he would also be discarded just as so many kings and nobles were under the feet of Xerxes army. Same for this movie, basically once the human adults "usefulness" came to an end, so did their existence. You know? This would have been a great opportunity for that Astrophysicist to have brought the Overmind a "token" of our appreciation for its gifts. I could have seen it's face contort in astonishment and rage as it's "life" is consumed by nuclear fire. You might be the "Overmind" but we want you to meet your anti god "Plutonius".

@@caleidoo We have no idea how tough or self would be in a 'collective counsciouness'(if that even exists or is possible) and if it is possible it likely could take many forms. But if you think about it we sort of live in one- a primitive one. Our minds arent aware or in 'sync' or anything but collectively our species have behaviour, wants and fears, spreads and try to self preserve... wich is pretty much how colony species on earth (like coral reefs and some others) are. They have no tought and no brain but are composed of individuals that interlock in a collective and manage to thrive and adapt (as a collective). I could see a good scifi author do a spin on collective counsciousness where individuals would be fully individual like us now, but where parts of their brain in sync help compose something akin to a god counsciouness- like a computer running on a network of servers(like a 'cloud'). Wether said bio-network "A"I would be able to influence or control its individuals could go both ways but likely wouldnt be needed to be interesting and work (and make sense like an evolutionary boost). In theory said larger counsciouness would be the ideal leader or every nations 'senior advisor' given it would have some insight and reflect from the species as a whole... or go full on godlike too, i mean our myths on gods (specially monotheistical gods like the abrahamanic religions) already have things like 'inside all of us', knowing everything about each person, understanding us on a deeper level... Heck if god exists and have those traits its more likely god be something like this then an external entity. The more i think about it the more it makes sense (for fictional purposes) - for instance an god like this likely wouldnt be inclined to interfering with individuals agency and freedom since hed also be everyone on some level and projected from us. It would explain dilemas about god like why he let bad people do bad things and what have you while still wishing the best for humanity...

I haven't seen this, but I remember reading it in junior high school. Being Catholic added another layer of dread. But after first being scared as a kid of being taken, and now as an adult with kids of my own being taken, it's even more terrifying. Even with the story of hope, not being able to share it with all others is depressing.

In the book it explains that the overmind brought the ship to earth and uses corporeal beings to do its bidding. It doesn't need them but it helps reduce the trauma. In the book they don't alter humans and they are more widwives of a new piece of the overmind.

The book came out in the 1953 by Arthur C Clarke himself Sputnik didn't launch until 57. We didn't even have satellites. There was no space crafts, man is space, shuttles or moon landing The book starts off with two scientists trying to invent a spacecraft when interrupted by the Arrival The downside to the Golden Age, prosperity and peace came at the expense of creativity. As they were given all new technology by the Overlords to give them a comfortable life without war, poverty, hunger, class, etc, there was no more drive to invent or even invest in Also: One of the quotes in the mini series is - "Space is not for you" (meaning humans)

I have not watched the series beyond a few episodes, probably because I would have had to pay for it. So, I cannot comment on the series itself. The book, though, was... almost life altering, at least a perspective altering phenomenon for me. I would like to think the series followed the book exactly, but for all great works of literature, I have never seen such a thing. Perhaps I'll see if I can watch the series...

Actually, I remember this book from my teen years. There is an audio-book version that has REALLY good voice-actors; it mad a firm mark in my mind. The book also made it all seem more inevitable than this miniseries. Remember, the evolution of humans into massively powerful telepathic/telekinetic beings was already going to happen. It wasn't caused by the Overlords interference, but a consequence of the evolution of mind that occurs in species that become sentient (possibly with some subtle pressure by the Overmind; the Overlords themselves aren't sure about that). By bringing humanity together and unifying us, directing and focusing us into one direction while passifying us by giving mankind so much peace and freedom and riches and leisure, it was possible for all that we were becoming to become part of the Overmind. BUT! The other option was for evolved humans to grow in other directions, for desperate or driven or dangerous indivduals to reach the point of evolution and bring others (indivudals, gangs, groups, religions) with them. By trying to hold onto their emotions and human-centric perspectives, they would then focused their power and mental energy in directions not conducive to absorbtion into the Overmind, and carried that outward as they moved beyond earth. Remember, The Overlords stopped all of humanities efforts at space-flight to prevent that... the same as they discouraged and redirected all investigation of mental or spiritual powers in order to prevent a premature awakening of mankind's emergent psychic abilities. It was written, "You would have become like a cancer; a malignant force growing and spreading across the galaxy, infecting and corrupting other species/civilizations with your uncontrolled essence." SO, they couldn't have let any of humanity continue outside of the Overmind, or those people would have become a danger to all other intelligences in the universe. Also, the Overlords themselves? They are an evolutionary dead-end. Their species has strength and intelligence and long life, and have developed amazing technology, but the Overmind is just BEYOND them. They don't understand it, they can't evolve to join it, and they cannot resist it: it is too powerful for them to do anything but obey. They do it's work on other species because IT can't interact directly with life on the cusp of becoming; it's immense power would be felt and would distort and mar and even destroy the evolving species before it reached the point of transcendence when it could be absorbed into the Overmind. Karellen even says, in his final broadcast to Mankind, "please don't hate us for what we are forced to do. We had no choice. And remember, WE will always envy YOU." Powerful book/story, if you you are open to it.
