I don't think Muzan was a good villain; if anything, he needed much more time to be fleshed out and a more interesting backstory.... But, I do think that Muzan represents a strange dynamic. I think more than god complex, his behaviour is closer to a child throwing a tantrum. He was someone weak, who got immensely strong, starts looking down on humanity, then all of a sudden he got obliterated and came close to death; and from that time onwards; he started to live in fear. I think the idea of someone so arrogant and cynical, with the strength to back it up; while simultaneously being extremely afraid about losing their own life and taking extreme precautions, because they have been near death; is a really cool and somewhat unique concept; but man..... It could have been implemented much much much better.
@mauricegreen5321 Жыл бұрын
While I dont think Muzan is the gratest villain of all time I think he was actually a good villain for the story's themes and narrative. One of the show's greatest themes was death and the acceptance of your own fate. Muzan is one of the only characters who could not accept his death and fate. Every time he faces the possibility of death he either cowers in fear or commands others to face it for him. While everyone else including his top ranking demons was able to accept their fate (though slightly grudgingly) when they died. Even when Muzan is obliterated by the sun he does everything in his power to make sure some form of him survives but he fails. While those who have faced death and accepted what fate gave to them are the victors. Muzan may not be the best villian in anime, but in the story of demon slayer he performs his role and beyond

I think he is fine but i 100% agree with your statement and think we can see it a lot IRL Sometimes the people who are the "Best" are often the ones most scared of actually doing anything or fear loosing that "strength" Muzan may be super strong but he is also a coward and terrified of dying. He lacks the ability to be brave or risk stuff unless he HAS TO Its not to dissimiliar to how people IRL who suffer trauma can become extremly irrational due to the fear Best example is someone in a car accident being traumatised by cars so much they cant get near them etc. IT is a bit irrational as you likelyy wont be hit by a car if you take proper precaution. But the chance is always there no matter how small. And Muzan who was 100% convinced he was immortal and bascially "god"(aside from the sun) was suddenly shwon he CAN be killed/hurt even if the chance is almost 0. And that is enough for him to become consumed by fear.

It's really a shame to read something like this "I don't think Muzan was a good villain; if anything, he needed much more time to be fleshed out and a more interesting backstory" Considering I can barely get through 16 episodes of Demon Slayer because of this exact reason. I particularly enjoy when the villain characters with a god complex eventually get a slice of humble pie by those they see below them. Like Wesker snapping because a 'normal human' like Chris destroyed his plans, or when Barragan, Aizen or Yhwach in Bleach getting topped from their thrones by those they see as beneath them specifically because of the flaws of their arrogance and God complex personality dismissing anyone as a potential threat to them. They're always so smug when they're in charge, but when the shoe's on the other foot, they mentally can't handle it. "You have waylaid all his other plans. Now, as a petulant child, he will destroy the game board rather than admit defeat. Be ready for anything. He still believes himself a god, and gods do not fall gracefully."

My favorit is when their own god complex ends up being what gets them killed/discovered. Light would have EASILY gotten away with everything he did, if he just didn't pick a fight with L. Yes, he does end up winning against L, but if he had kept his ego at bay, didn't outright challenge L and didn't underestimate the students of L, he would have won. He would have been able to genuinly just kill as he wanted to, without having to even dirty his own hands by going against his moral code. I absolutely love that the reason L even manage to locate where Light is, in the beginning of the show, is because Light gets as easily provoked as a toddler. They were playing a game of hide and seek and L literally narrowed the search area by just going "I am going to find you so damn easily!" and Light, being way too proud about his own genuis, screamed "No you wont!". I mean L even knew it was Light after like 4 episodes (I believe, been a while since I last saw the anime) but just doesn't have enough proof, and clearly enjoy the battle they are having. Had Light been a bit less arrogant, he would have never been caught and I absolutely love the fact that his own god complex and ego is what ends up being his downfall.

"If they look down on humanity as though they are ants, do not make them afraid of ants." The problem with this statement is that everyone knows that one singular any is not something to be afraid of. However, where there is one ant there will always be hundreds, thousands, MILLIONS of others. Enough that, if they work together, they can even kill something as large as a crab. That's what Muzan fears, and he was right to, for it was not one ant but many that took him down in the end. Not only that, but Muzan is not omnipotent, so he undoubtedly feared that any one of those hundreds of ants could potentially be as strong as the single one who nearly managed to kill him so long ago. For someone who fears death as much as he does, just the potential that could happen again is enough for me to find him hiding himself away believable. He is immortal, after all. Just like with Yoriichi, all he has to do is outlive all the other demon slayers. He is not in a rush.

You should make a video about villainous groups like the band of seven (Inuyasha), the jeagers (Akame Ga Kill), The Ten Comments ( 7 deadly sins), The Warriors (Attack On Titan), The 12 Moon Demons ( Demon Slayer), the league of villains (BNHA), etc. one of my favorite type of villains is when they come in groups.
@vcamv2354 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't count the 12 demon moons in this then as, the fct they're a group is basically a background fact only, as they basically never team-up or have group dynamics. Like, you said The Ten Commandments, and, althogh Nanatsu no Taizai is not very well written(Though better than DS in many aspects), you see different dynamics between them, members group up to do attacks, you see how they play-off each other and which combinations "do more damage" and work best, you see they have personal relationships with each other. The 12 demon moons are just... 12 people who were given power and work for the same guy, but outside of Daki and Gyutaro, they're basically all "work alone" and no group stuff. I mean, even the Espadas in Bleach who also work mostly alone had moments between each other to showcase the "group dynamic"
@legoshirocha Жыл бұрын
@@vcamv2354 Im sorry if I didn’t explain myself right but I what I meant is that they need to be part of a group, order, organization etc. They don’t need to work always together but as long as that they are part of a group. The Ten Commandments do actually work together from time to time and this happens with The Band of 7 as well. I’m not fully familiarized with the Demon Slayer manga so I don’t know much but I know they are part of a group/order that work individually. I love this type of villains a lot and although some stand out more like Bankotsu or Zeldris, they are still part of a group.

@@legoshirocha Oh I see now. I thought you meant just Villain Groups as a whole, like, analyze the groups and stuff. But I like your idea

@@legoshirocha Yes, but again, those two examples still give us moments and scenes of them together. My point with the DS group is that, though they're a group and work msotly alone, which is not a problem, we don't have the "group" part, where we see some of the between characters relatioships. Like, with the LOV you know which ones are closer, you know they have their bantherings, the Panthom Troupe specially has a lot of group interactions, while the DS demons are just... A group in name, but if they were solo it wouldn't make any difference

Sorry if anything is spelled incorrectly or doesn't make sense. SORT OF DEMON SLAYER SPOILERS Muzan was written pretty well in my opinion because to me he seems like someone trying to escape be human, trying to be better(stronger). But this ultimately backfires because he is still (inherently) human. He has trauma linked to yorichi and sun breathing and because of that trauma he is always going to have that irrational fear even years later. He's always going to be afraid that yorichi or someone similar is going to go after him which is why he was so scared of tanjiro and sent other demons after him rather than going afyer him himself. I'm not really saying this to disagree because I don't think he is a good example of a god complex character I'm mostly saying this because you statec his fear made no sende given how he was presented whisch I sorta agree with.

One example of god complex I really like is actually from an overall preeeetty bad anime; Digimon Frontier. Lucemon doesn't get much time on screen. Like, 2-3 episodes. But he sure makes the most of them. He gets hinted at from time to time, and once the initial big bad is defeated, two more even stronger ones show up, and Lucemon is revealed to be the one manipulating the first big bad the whole time. Quality of everything else aside, Lucemon himself is the probably one of the truest God Complex characters you can get, as he genuinely believes that he is the all-power God who can create and destroy all creation as he sees fit, which he certainly has the power to back it up. But what really sells him to me, is how his evolutions actually perfectly reflect his character in their designs. His first form, that of an angelic child. This is the form that manipulates the other major villains. The unassuming nature of this form, how he appears to be a holy being, a mere child. Which plays into him manipulating others to do what he wants, as it is a form that appears to be incapable of any wrong. It also the form with the shortest temper, showing him also essentially throwing tantrums when others question him, continuing to reflect the child-like appearance. His second form is that of fully grown man, with half of his wings now changed to represent darkness. In this form he preaches about his unbiased nature. How his control over light and darkness shows that he brings both destruction and creation. His personality far more arrogant and calm, now speaking with unshaking confidence in himself and his role as God. But the subtle touch of his design, is that the wings aren't actually even. He has in fact, one extra small dark wing on the side that should be all light. An easily missable detail to show that Lucemon in truth is more darkness than light. And finally, his third/forth form, a package deal. The initial form is that of a gigantic dragon, with the crests of the other Demon Lords on it's wings. Even disregarding the other Lords, this goes to show him as basically an embodiment of all sin. This form is literally called 'Satan Mode' after all. And like this, he hardly speaks. All that is said now is essentially 'Obey or Die.' This dragon, in truth however, is only a shadow of the one controlling it. Inside an orb the dragon holds, there's a larva. Something pathetic, it almost looks like an embryo even. This is the true form that controls the dragon. This all comes together to show, in truth, Lucemon is nothing more than a mere insect. One that needs to be squashed. A truth contrasting the massive invincible sin dragon. And I think there's no better way to finish off such a God Complex character then to reveal them as pathetic right before their defeat, even lower than those they once thought they were better than. So yeah. Digimon Frontier is definitely not all that good. But Lucemon is an absolutely fantastic final villain both just as a character and even symbolically.

Akashi wasn't obsessed with winning, it seemed natural to him. He has Aomine's mentality, but worse. Aomine WANTS the possibility of a loss deep inside. Akashi completely accepts it's impossible for him to lose. ,,Victory is like breathing to him". He doesn't even really think about winning, he just wins and deems it natural for him, because he is superior. To the point where he doesn't accept people looking down on him or be eye to eye with him unless they accept him as superior first. Hell, he makes his opponents drop down/kneel (ankle breaking) to show his superiority even physically (ironically he's the smallest of the GoM)

It's so interesting to see the different perspectives of God complex malicious characters being presented. This often presents a situation of pride vs humility in my eyes, as having a God complex can often mean you see yourself above other people and humans in general, this starts to connect directly to the theme of morality since if you're not a human, is the morality that you have even significant anymore? If what you're doing isn't morally correct, (like killing people for example) but those people are causing the world harm, and you see yourself as a hero, are you right or wrong? This is a great, and accurate analysis and interpretation done on these characters. Also, I would like to see some analysis done on characters such as Ayanokoji(COTE), Kurumi(Date a Live), and Sora and Shiro(No Game No Life). Loved the video!

I personally never really saw Muzan as a villian with a god complex. A superiority complex would be better fitting, as when he was mortal he felt inferior. He had a weak body and he hated it. It made him look weaker and inferior to others, a harsh sting to him considering the status he was born into. (Assuming he was born in a noble family due to the clothes we see him wear and the fact he was able to take experimental medicine.) Muzan felt inferior and was terrified of dying, and it all came to a head when he killed the doctor. Even as a demon he felt superior, but he still felt inferior as he wasn't perfect yet. The sun could still kill him, then when Yoruichi came along and almost killed him. When he should of been immortal, he was reminded of death and the fact he could die. Muzan doesn't have a god complex, he acts that way and he definitely believes he's better than humans and other demons. But its all to hide the fact that he's scared. Which is why he isn't a good villain with a god complex. As he never had one.

But if not, it seems presumptuous to negatively judge a character for being a poor version of something they’re not meant to be.

Nah it's just Axel doesn't get the irony of having a God Complex is that you will always have something/someone who will humble you. Dio is one of the OG God Complex characters and he cried upon defeat, let people bully him, and admitted to having an equal.

Weird. Nux sounds different than I remember. Then again, it's been a while since I've watched any of his content. EDIT: ...And Nux's segment was fantastic, and got me thinking that maybe I should check his channel because I've missed this kind of content from him. I walked away from him years ago because it seemed like the things I liked about his videos were becoming buried in the memes, but if he still does stuff like this, then perhaps I should give him another chance.

I have watched your analysis videos and they're great. But I just wanted to ask you why Eren Jaeger from Attack no Titan isn't listed. (not in this video specifically but I could see him fitting into one of these videos) I'm not criticizing your video in any way, it's great! Thank you for making these videos, I enjoy listening to them when I game lol.

Appreciate your kind words! Honestly I don't feel like I am able to analyze even tbh. I dropped AOT and don't have the whole picture; so if I cover him in the future I will likely have someone help me host that part of the video :)

@@AxelBeats Ahhh that makes total sense. It's not for everyone and a lot of it is quite controversial in some ways. But I appreciate your answer to my question! No pressure at all to include Eren in your videos I was just curious. :) Thank you for responding, have a great rest of your day!

Idk how Atreus made this list over someone like heimdall that’s a weird choice considering Atreus only acted this way for a portion of the gow 2018 game right after being told he was a god and then saw the error of his ways like a chapter later but heimdall genuinely did have a narcissistic god complex esque personality for the entirety of his time in the game

@nekopath287911 ай бұрын
Happy Chaos from Guilty Gear would have bin a good example to because he is a realy interesting take on this character type he does not think that he is a god. he knows that he technically is one and everything is boring and meaningles for him because of that so he uses the world as his doolhouse for intertanement he wants that the good side is winning but he is helping the villens because a world with drama is more intertaning than a world withuot it

So is atreus. However, as I said in the video, when gods are anthropomorphic, such as how the Greek and Nordic gods tend to be, they can still demonstrate a god complex.

I understand how the message feels weak (do note I don't like demon slayer couldnt get into it but I dont hate it). I think the message of a god complex or someone displaying these behaviors does necessarily contradict. In the example of john cena going against a child and him experiencing fear when the bell rings. I think the reason why muzan is a bit hit or miss is that the demon that does terrible things ultimately is driven by the most human desire when faced with memento mori. I think muzan is supposed to be tragic in how he acted under speculation without knowing the truth of his treatment. God complexes often times show as haughty confidence, and arrogance. I think a part of the character when looked at under your lens is somewhat true but within the context of the show the idea of a demon something the general public deems as monstrous having this innate human like purpose/ motive. It would be more interesting if the show explored/ represented it in a more nuanced way because the general thought behind it is logical. A god complex shown on the outside and the viewer gradually understands that this complex is fueled by their goal. I would like to see a villain so desperate to cling onto this that the character that was once filled with intrigue, power, intimidation. be put into that state more as something to see in their final moments before death. They go from the can't be touched realm of existence in the viewers mind, to something filthy tainted by mortal desires and showcasing that fall from benovolent status.

Honestly i would say light is more of a devil then a God to me, because the people are the only ones who can decide on what is a God and what isn’t, light was just a man given power by beings that only seek to be entertained, for the death note is an apple that can show the true nature of a human being not something that can lead you to the path of God hood but that’s just my opinion.🤔🐱
