🤎🤎 That was a raw and uncut story. One thing Braided Diadem stated in one of her videos was this…black women don’t hate their hair texture, they hate how short it is. I tend to agree. Most of us with very coily hair were not taught how to care and grow our hair when we were young. So now as adult women, we’re experiencing “big chops”, we’re just now Learning our hair, while trying to adjust to our texture that we kept hidden for so long, with relaxers, attachments, etc. Maybe some do struggle with accepting their texture, so maybe it can be a bit of both. Whew!! It’s amazing to witness and experience what YEARS of self hair hate can do to a person. Thanks for sharing! And you did a beautiful job with that style! 🥰💕💙

Yes!!! I agree with her on that point; I still had issues with my texture, but length affected me more than texture. That will get proven with more time, most women with long coily hair (which are very few) are celebrated more so. And the sad part is, most of us with the coiler texture jump off the path before our hair even reaches that length. Great point to repeat! Thank you 🤎🥹😍🙏🏾 Always love hearing from you

Excellent point. During the sixties those with huge afros turned heads. Many wore scarves, geles, afro puffs wigs, in the back until their hair grew out. ( Of course their were exceptions, but in my experience, few.) subsequently the extension of the hair length with geri-curls and the rest is " herstory")

As someone who prefers to wear her natural hair 90% of the time, I can still relate to how you felt. It's hard not being influenced by the culture that praises sew ins and buss down 40 in middle part wigs lol. Unfortunately, the world can make us feel inadequate for the way God created us. We need to know our value and beauty outside of the culture, which is something I'm still working on. Thanks for sharing your story and being vulnerable 🩷 Feeling ugly is something that's hard to admit, but most people feel that way at some point or another.

Chloe!!!!! You’re so so beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing. You’re so right! It is a programming by the world that takes so much effort to overcome. I’m glad you’re working on it because I don’t believe every black woman will come to that acceptance, but if we’re one of the ones to, then it’s a honor and fight worth having! 🌸🥹🤎 I appreciate your comment and sharing your heart.

Thank you so much Laurie 🥹! You know, I feel that part of the reason many of us have this relationship with our hair is because of the unnecessary effort and strain we put on ourselves. If the experience is draining, it’ll always produce a negative feeling. That’s a very good point you raised there!

Her name was Shavonne. I don’t have a good memory when it comes to childhood classmates names or even just remembering most of the children in my classes for that matter. But I remember her. I lived in Trinidad when I was younger, until the age of thirteen. My neighborhood was pretty homogeneous. My school was made up of about 80% black and maybe about 20% West Indian. Shavonne came to my school in the 4th grade. She is what you would have called racially ambiguous. Almost like a Mariah Carey but more golden tan with long almost strawberry blonde/brown curly hair. I remember thinking I had never seen someone so beautiful and I think most of the kids felt the same way. A lot of the boys followed her around like lost puppies. And the girls wanted to be her friend. I wanted to be her. At this time I didn’t realize how broken I was because of a traumatic situation that happened years prior, also dysfunction in my household. But I just knew if I looked like her especially her hair all would be well in the world. It’s just crazy now to think about. Thank you for sharing your story. Thank God for healing.

Woooooooooowwwwwww Camille! 😭🤎 thank you for openly sharing such a vulnerable moment in your childhood. I don’t think most of us realize how damaging our childhoods have been on our self image and identity…until God opens your eyes to see it. And when you’re on the other side, it seems absolutely insane that we thought the way we do. But, living in the Caribbean now, it’s no different than American growing up. Most kids who didn’t look black stood out as unicorns and it made them a spectacle. But somehow, their looks weren’t teased, but celebrated. And you have to wonder how did that calibration happen so young!? I’m so glad the story is changing for our daughters. And we can celebrate all types of beauty! Ugh I love this! Would you mind if I shared it in a future video? lol I have screenshots of all your comments 😂

I appreciate you being so open, genuine, honest and authentic. I've shared before that I combed out my locs and loved my hair then but never was "alone" with my own natural hair. When I combed them out and tried to style my hair I literally looked in the mirror, said I hate my hair it's ugly, and broke down crying. I thank Yah for giving me a supportive husband who said no it's not and prayed with me and supported me on this journey to loving who Yah created me to be. Now I love my hair and am truly grateful that I am made in Yah's image and should NEVER hate what He said was good! I love you my Sister in Christ keep going! You are so beautiful inside and out, true Proverbs 31 woman!

@malindarayallen

@CoilyCode Easily over a decade. But what I've found on the path is that every time I think I've "made it", I take another step on the path. I finally understand that this is something that I have to keep peeling back layer by layer. I went from hating my hair, to tolerating it, to "dealing with it, to taking care of it, to accepting it, to truly enjoying and celebrating it. I think the next step is reverence, but I won't know until I get there. Mo' hair! 😍

This video resonates with me so much. I always think about how my natural hair struggles came from the fact that I haven’t always had access to my hair. My mom relaxed it when I was young, so that means I’ve had less years to learn my hair and less years to grow it out. Growth is something I’m focusing on this year, but I tell myself to still appreciate my hair for how it is now. I struggle sometimes with doing styles other than flat twists cause when I left my hair out in a fro or puffs in high school, I didn’t see a lot of growth. I’m trying to figure out how to focus on growth while doing styles I love, so I really appreciate the message of this video. Thank you for reminding me to give myself, and my hair, some grace. 🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎

I first started wearing wigs at 59 yrs old, im 63 now, never had a weave or wig before that, but unfortunately my hair started thinning terribly at the crown, either female pattern baldness or ccca, or both. I couldn't cover it anymore so i started wearing wigs. I am diligently working on my hair to thicken it, esp the crown area, bc I would love to wear my natural hair out again. @Emelda-j3j it depends on the style. Mini braids take me 4/5 hours lol. But I do find if you practice styling your hair more, you’ll get better and faster!

Thank you for sharing some more of your story. A lot of this is relatable and comforting to know that we’re not the only ones that have felt the emotional toll that takes place when learning to accept our hair. Something that I’m still learning is with patience and viewing my hair the way our Heavenly Father does the journey will get easier. 🤎

Of course Lovely one. We all probably have more in common than we even know. And it helps us to heal faster! I’m glad you’re learning. Take your time and give yourself plenty of grace. It doesn’t happen overnight 😍🤎

Thank you Mini! That means a lot to me 🥹 it’s easier to tell it now that I overcame it, there’s no way I would’ve been able to share this in the time I was going through it.
