Is there a reason why May 17th is Norway's national day? Is it an independence day like the 4th of July in the US?

Yes! It asboulutely is :D We got our own "Grunnlov" and became independent :D

A bit more complicated than that. It was the day the constitution was written. Norway simply transitioned from Danish rule to Swedish rule. We were the spoils of war from the Napoleonic wars. Denmark was involuntarily on the losing side. However Swedish rule was completely different from Danish. Under Denmark we were more like an exploited colony with no say in anything. With Sweden we gained a high degree of autonomy. Norway got its own parliament and government. We would elect our own representatives and we had our own constitution and laws. But we had to respect the Swedish king as our king and he decided on our foreign policy. E.g. who we would go to war with or make peace with. What sort of trade agreement we would engage in with foreign powers. This is why Norway eventually split from Sweden almost 100 years after the constitution day we celebrate. We didn't think Swedish foreign policy served us very well.

_But the thing is_, it would take another 90 years or so for Norway to actually become a separate contry. Before that, the personal union of the kingdoms was much like England and Scotland, in the sense that there were two parliments, and even different laws.

I've seen what the word "Russ" everywhere, but I have no idea what it is, can someone explain, please?

_ooh_ let me enlighten you. Russ is a kind of festivity that takes place from the start of May, until the National day, 17 days later. When you are close to finishing highschool (_Videregående_), this is a kind of celebration. People start planning it years before, forming groups within their classes, or their school, and also paying for a lot of the stuff. They buy the clothes and little IDs for themselves, and the whole crew collectively pays for either a bus or a car, and fills it up with high end sound systems and everything to bring the party with them as they go. They usually spend like, NOK 1-4 million NOK, which is roughly USD 120,000-470,000. During the time of Russ, they drive around drinking - _drinking so much that you can even see some of these russ goers sleeping on the streets, dying of hangover_ -, go to gathering of other russes and everything. And I guess there's a winner? I'm not sure. The point of it all is just to party hard and drink even harder. Sometimes even some heavy drugs get involved. Personally I'd rather just take that money I'd have otherwise spent on all of that and just take a trip around Europe, but I guess these people are after the thrill. And to top it all, this all takes place during the final exams, so you can only imagine how much of a depressing sight it must be in a classroom.
