The most fascinating American religion is arguably the Nation of Islam. Founded in 1930 by a mysterious salesman, the organization grew to tens of thousands of members. By the 1960s, controversial orators like Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan were traveling nationwide to challenge the integrated liberal civil rights consensus represented by figures like Martin Luther King Jr. In this documentary, we explore the beliefs and inner workings of the Lost-Found Nation.

To the sister who took the time out to research and put the due diligence into making this comprehensive documentary I would like to take the time out to take you for the effort that you put forth. From viewing some of the comments I see that there are some who are upset with some inaccuracies contained within the documentary. Having had the honor of being schooled under the guidance and instruction of the NOI, I overstand completely how devout followers of The Messenger and His Philosophy are very particular about everything being historically accurate. Instead of letting perceived slights be a point of contention I wish some brothers in the comments would have the courage to point out the parts that a-grieve them and use it as a point to educate instead of argue. I’ve seen some documentaries on KZbin that are blatantly inaccurate in an attempt to paint The Nation in a horrible light. I don’t feel as though you had any malicious intent with the angle in which you took to present this documentary. Once again thank you for your effort, your hardwork because a documentary this comprehensive requires lots of research, time involved and for the quality you presented. New subscriber to your channel and I look forward to what else you have in store, peace.

Why would Louis farakhan be mad at Malcom for exposing Elijah Muhammad hypocrisy?
@blkbleaf
@blkbleaf 4 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for watching the video! Honorable Farrakhan spoke about this in an interview with Sway Calloway. The NOI is known for taking in men and women who are often overlooked by more “respectable” organizations (Urban League, NAACP, etc.). Farrakhan saw Malcolm X as one such person. He mentions that Honorable Elijah Muhammad (HEM) took Malcolm under his wing and allowed him to rise to a position of international renown. He felt that Malcolm should have waited for guidance on the information he uncovered and accepted his punishment when he made comments about JFK. Farrakhan was angry because Malcolm’s defection caused a lot of people to have a crisis of faith, leave the NOI, and return back to their old lives (drugs, crime, etc.). In short, he thought that Malcolm X had betrayed the principles of the NOI over a personal dispute. Thanks again for the comment!
@sadiM653
@sadiM653 4 ай бұрын
It’s no longer a personal dispute when other people’s live are affected. Those “women” he slept with were very young and were merely sacrificial lambs in the process of Elijah using his position and power to gain trust. People who behaved in the manner that Elijah behaved were dismissed from the Nation. The hypocrisy is what made Malcom X speak up. Malcom X ultimately did what he believed to be right at that time. Yet this is the classic case of no good deed goes unpunished. Louis Farrakhan looked up to Elijah Muhammad as a father figure and when people have people on a high pedestal more often than not will they side with whom they admire more rather right or wrong. We see it everyday in society. I would like to also add that these young women were black. They are not allowed to be victims neither are they looked upon as victims. Yet they are the real victims in this scenario. Malcom X was not only standing up for what was right but for them and he was forever silenced for it. Louis Farrakhan might not have pulled the trigger, but he spoke to an entire audience on what he desired to become of Malcom X while in his authoritative position.

I’m really glad you framed this by discussing Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey first. They definitely represent a line of black political thought which is more conservative (for lack of a better word) than the more radical and progressive beliefs of figures like DuBois, who himself was at various times a member of the socialist party and later the communist party. And I think this is very much reflects where the more reactionary posture of the NOI comes from, but also kinda explains their modus operandi. While DuBois openly allied himself with, and worked extensively with, white reformers, socialists, communists and others who shared his broader political beliefs, bringing his tradition (ironically more into the mainstream), Washington’s emphasis on economic development and social betterment led to a much more inward looking ideology with a more exclusivist worldview that emphasized independence from White America.
@blkbleaf
@blkbleaf Жыл бұрын
Yea, it’s very interesting to see the threads between all of these movements. Religion was a vehicle of innovation in Northern cities particularly in Harlem as religious freedom laws in the US allowed black people to transcend racial taboos. I would actually put DuBois in the more conservative/classical liberal category relative to today’s left as far as in those early days when he was debating Washington’s and Garvey’s ideas (1900s-1920s). He moved to a more “class conscious”sociologist ideology a little later and he even broke with the NAACP (the organization he helped create). Ironically by then, it was too late and his older views had won dominance in the black community and politics. But of course you are right that he didn’t have a racial separatist or black nationalist orientation at all through out his life and was also not particularly religious though he respected the place of the black church. Love digging into these historical figures and movements ! Thanks for watching !
@SunflowerSocialist
@SunflowerSocialist Жыл бұрын
@@blkbleafI’d strongly disagree with that framing. DuBois was calling himself a socialist pretty early on and voted for Eugene V. Debs in 1908, and 1912. He only left the socialist party in 1916 so he could vote for Woodrow Wilson, who was running on an anti war platform that year (a choice DuBois later regretted). Du Bois also frequently cited socialist writings throughout his career, expressed an admiration for Marxism and a staunch opposition to capitalism. So Framingham, as a classical liberal, or conservative relative to today’s left, is just nonsense. He also was a member of the communist party from around 1952 onwards (it’s unclear when he formally joined, but he was sympathetic to them as early as the 1930s). The socialist influence on his thought is quire apparent in perhaps his single most famous work (and my personal favorite of his books) “The Soul of Black Folks”, which draws heavily from Marxist ideas of false consciousness. (I must note, even if you have an aversion to Marxism or socialism, I highly recommend that book.) I would also add that I don’t think it’s fair to say that he wasn’t a black nationalist, however, he represent a very different strain of black nationalism from that of Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey. He was a black nationalist, but he wasn’t a racial nationalist, a supremacist or a separatist like the nation. In many ways he was a forerunner of plurinationalism.
@blkbleaf
@blkbleaf Жыл бұрын
@@SunflowerSocialist thanks for the reply. I read Souls of Black Folk many years ago. I wouldn’t mind picking it up again with the new information you provided. I suppose I made my comments based on his involvement in The Birth Control Movement and some writings I’ve seen by him around that issue. He had negative, paternalistic views of poorer black people in those days which didn’t suggest a commitment to socialism. The Birth Control Movement was in the 1910s timeframe. Of course, everyone has inconsistencies in their worldview. No one is one hundred percent consistent. Also, I don’t think he advocated for black people to establish their own nation. My understanding of his politics was that he wanted to create the NAACP and work with sympathetic white people to fight for the rights of black people within the United States. I was distinguishing him from those like Hon. Elijah Muhammad or Marcus Garvey that advocated for racial separation. Thanks again!
@SunflowerSocialist
@SunflowerSocialist Жыл бұрын
@@blkbleaf You are absolutely correct that Du Bois had a paternalistic attitude when it came to the birth control movement, as did most birth control advocates in that era. However, unfortunately, especially among more educated figures within the socialist movement, these attitudes were not uncommon, especially among those with higher levels of education. You see kind of similar sentiments with Helen Keller, who was also a socialist, and friend of DuBois, but she also advocated Eugenics, much like DuBois and Sanger. I have yet to watch your videos on the birth control movement, but I think you can definitely attest to the fact that these kinds of sentiments were certainly not out of the ordinary in that time. As for DuBois and black nationalism, it is important that we distinguish what is a nation from a nation state. A nation state is a polity, a geopolitical entity. A nation is a group of people found by shared identity, culture, language, geography, history, and political, economic and social consciousness. Now, Du Bois definitely was not a black separatist like Garvey or the nation of Islam. Nor was he a racial supremacist, but he was still a nationalist in that he conceptualize Black people as a nation within the United States. In many ways, this concept comes out of the Austromarxist tradition, and shares some similarities with the Jewish Bundist movement in Europe, which was opposed to Zionism, yet still represented a different strain of Jewish nationalism, but focus more on Internal liberation within the societies they lived in, as opposed to the creation of a separate nation state as advocated for by zionists.
@SunflowerSocialist
@SunflowerSocialist Жыл бұрын
@@blkbleaf I would also add though that it’s important to see Garvey and Du Bois, as in a shared intellectual tradition, but has diverging views within that tradition. Both Garvey in Du Bois, supported pan, Africanism, opposed racism and colonialism and saw Black people as a nation within the United States, in need of liberation. However, that’s where they start to diverge. Du Bois, of course advocated for racial integration and racial equality, strongly advocating for things like anti-lynching laws. Garvey, as you point out, advocated racial separatism, and the back to Africa movement. They also had divergent economic fuse. Garvey was a big fan of capitalism, drawing from Booker T. Washington’s views, on black improvement, and favorite things like black entrepreneurship, and he opposed Socialism, although he did express views that were sympathetic to the bolsheviks, due to their stance on national self-determination and opposition to European colonialism. Du Bois, on the other hand, was a socialist, he believes capitalism was at the root of racism, and that racial equality and economic equality went hand in hand. But, I also think it’s important to note that their intellectual influence often has gone hand-in-hand with leader thinkers. Many subsequent black nationalists especially more progressive black nationalists, like the Black Panthers for instance, drew from both Garvey and Du Bois. Well, some black nationalist movements, like Nation of Islam, are pretty clearly, and firmly in the Garvey tradition, they still draw a few ideas from DuBois, like double consciousness. and, of course, Garvey and Du Bois influenced one another.

Dr. Ava Muhammad was the first woman minister and head of a mosque in Islam period! Dr.Khalid Muhammad helped to rebuild the NOI and was also heavily respected in the Hip Hop community by the likes of (Ice cube, Nwa, Erykah Badu, Tupac, Lauryn Hill,Master P and Public Enemy)

One thing I admired about MalcolmX is before he involved himself with NOI he was from the hood, robbed, stole, schemed and one thing you cannot do to somebody that came up from that type of life is feed them bullishTTTT. Malcolm really had a deep passion maybe like he owed them from helping out after he got out of prison and sometimes when people go through what he went through and the NOI helped him get himself together then he felt as though he owed that much and that maybe NOI was the right path to walk but later seen the hypocrisy how the NOI would do the same thing mega churches AKA money scam churches in christianity do too. Come to find out MalcolmX was brutally murdered by his own people. I really believe Master Fard was murdered too the reason Elijah might haven risen in Master Fards place soon after. Rest in love MalcolmX

Thank you for your comment and for watching! I feel similarly. I believe that Master Fard did meet a bad end. It becomes increasingly difficult to believe he left voluntarily and peacefully after studying many other similar movements and seeing the trajectory of the NOI. Recall that Noble Drew Ali also died under mysterious circumstances after his movement ballooned in membership about 4 years after its founding. I have no proof at all. We may never know the truth but it’s interesting to think about the possibilities. Thanks again !

I hope you don't characterize my comments as disrespectful, but after listening to your documentary, there are some information that I feel should be corrected. First, Wallace Fard did not pronounce his name as "F-a-r-d" although he spelled it as such. He pronounced his last name as _"Fa-rod"_ as if it had two syllables. This is very important, and deeper research will explain its importance. Also, concerning the human sacrifice, Fard was arrested as the leader of his group which local authorities believed he encouraged ritual murder. He wasn't just "arrested and released". He was arrested on November 24, 1932, evaluated by a psychiatrist, and finally released on December 7, 1932 but not before he was brought before a local judge who "ordered" him out of Detroit and told him not to return. Fard agreed and left Detroit. However, he snuck in and out of Detroit on several occasions until he was apprehended again less than six months later on May 25, 1933. This time he was photographed and fingerprinted (which was not done in his first arrest) and given a stern warning by the judge that if he was ever caught in Detroit again, he would be charged with accessory to murder stemming from cult member Robert Harris' murder conviction. Fard left Detroit and went to Chicago, where, as Elijah Muhammad exclaimed, _"Master Fard was almost immediately arrested upon his arrival and placed behind prison bars."_ Fard was arrested in Chicago on a charge of "investigation as a con man". He was released the next day on his own recognizance. However, Fard was harassed by Chicago police whenever they felt the desire to do so. Nonetheless, he briefly ran his Detroit temple from Chicago and California until June of 1934 when he abruptly stopped corresponding with Elijah Muhammad and was never seen or heard from ever again.

Hello, first thanks for watching and commenting. On your first point, you are correct I watched interviews with Andrew Morrow who wrote the book “Finding Master Fard” and he pronounced it the way you state above with two syllables. I also heard Imam Warith Muhammad and others pronounce it this way. However, I wasn’t aware of the significance of that pronunciation and so didn’t pick up on that distinction in my research. Thanks for the correction. On your second point, I was/am aware of those details regarding Master Fard’s interactions with the authorities in Detroit and Chicago. I read Beynon’s observations of what he called “The Voodoo Cult” where he referenced the human sacrifice allegation. I also read some things about Hon. Elijah Muhammad having contact with him for some time after he left. I couldn’t find much to support of this aside from references to statements made by Hon. Elijah Muhammad. Whether Master Fard taught human sacrifice or whether this was misconstrued by a member isn’t clear. I also considered the fact that these were “oppositional” sources, if you will. These were people who were skeptical/critical of the religion so I didn’t want to go deep into those claims without having other, better sources to go on. I also felt it wasn’t critical to the overall understanding of this point in the NOIs history. The ultimate result was that he left and was not heard from again after 1934 and Hon. Elijah Muhammad consolidated support from a large portion of the remaining members. I mention that there are still questions to be investigated and answered, though. And that’s why I encourage people to read Morrow’s book for starters. I don’t take this disrespectfully at all. Thank you again for the comment.

13:35 - the perceived contradiction between Master Fard's speculated respect for the "finality of Prophethood" doctrine as per "traditional Islam" and his potential membership with the Ahmadian sect which allegedly undermines this doctrine, is resolved by studying the Ahmadiyya Anjuman Ishaat-Islaam Lahore (the Lahorian sect or faction of the Ahmadiyya Movement). This latter group holds views on this doctrine that are more in line with "traditional Islam" and there is newer research that backs this claim by Dr. Fatima Fanusi and Prof. Tawsif Elahi Chowdhury.

@@C.A.N59199 she did not say Jesus is a prophet she says he is the messiah and the rest (like prophet muhammad) are false prophets. Jesus claimed his divinity in John 8:58 - “Before Abraham was, I AM”. I AM was the name God told to Moses to reveal to Jews. So Jesus is claiming eternity. Islam recognizes this by calling Jesus the “Word of Allah” (Surah 4:171). This matches John 1-2 in the Gospel or Injeel. In Islam Jesus was sinless, did not die, and was a creator (he breathed life into a clay bird that became real). Muhammad was a sinner who performed no miracles and is dust in a grave. Even by Muslim standards Jesus Christ is the example for all time and for people, not muhammad.

I have a new perspective after rewatching this again. What stood out the most was “providing psychological comfort with the use of theology for financial gain” The Church was too docile and to be honest still is very docile when it comes to racial inequality. The Nation of Islam provided a more dominant point of view but only in theory. If it can still be pushed that the only way Black Americans will elevate, is to stay away from white people in a very mixed society that we all live in, in 2024. Then it can be continuously justified why things have not changed for black America, when in 2024 and even then it would have been impossible even with segregation to be completely removed from white society. Providing an impossible answer to a Global systemic racial issue, was purely for the psychological comfort for the financial gain. Racism has become so pervasive in Global Society it is not just white people who are in participation. Many people of color are genuinely interested in upholding anti-black sentiment, along with the xenophobia of Black Americans specifically.
@blkbleaf

Thanks for posting your perspective. I think that, as you mentioned, it was the rhetoric that was unique and confrontational. The church actually did pursue and achieve political concessions but those concessions have had mixed results. Meanwhile, the NOI told black people that political change was futile and openly opposed the church led movements. It’s an interesting discussion about the different ways both perspectives were right and wrong. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

I just watched a video of of a NOI member saying he believes that Elijah Muhammad is god in the flesh.. Is this what the NOI believes?
@blkbleaf
@blkbleaf 11 ай бұрын
Hey, thanks for the question. I’ll start by stating that over the years certain teachings within the NOI have evolved or been clarified (as the members would say) by the current leadership. So, I can’t speak to the accepted teachings for members TODAY. In terms of the historical Nation of Islam, The Hon. Elijah Muhammad is to NOI members who the 6th Century Prophet Muhammad is to mainstream Muslims. So they didn’t see him as “God in the flesh”, but as a messenger of God. And God, according to their teachings, came in the person of Master WD Fard. Given that they believe Hon. Elijah Muhammad saw the face of God and learned directly from him, he and his family are extremely revered. In fact, any of the old members (most have passed away by now) who actually joined under Master Fard would be seen similarly. And this is another reason why Hon. Louis Farrakhan had more credibility when he left than Hon. Silis Muhammad. I believe one of Hon. Elijah Muhammad siblings may have joined Hon. Silis Muhammad’s group. But a lot of Hon. Elijah Muhammad’s wives and children went with Farrakhan including one son who looks exactly like him! Having Hon. Elijah Muhammad’s bloodline, is extremely significant. I hope that answers your question ! Thanks again !

Like good politicians, religious leaders start by saying the obvious; the next thing they want is our vote (or to attend their place of worship). Yes to some of what he says, but no to following any spiritual system that isn't based on and from Africa. Most religious leaders say precisely what we want to hear but not what we need to hear. As much as I love Malcolm X, worship of Arabia and Saudi Arabia have never benefited but a few blacks at the top $. Peace. Ase, Shalom, Amandla, Amandla, Hotep, Imani, Ubuntu. Remember NOI leader told members to buy and read Scientology book by L Ron Hubbard. Dianetics. Sweet talk doesn't = black liberation.

It amazes me how much time is spent trying to tear down the greatest black leader in American history. T.H.E.M. has not been surpassed in accomplishments for the disenfranchised African-Americans. How many ppl have taken a religion and proselytized or evangelize the way they see fit. For some reason when black ppl in America create a culture, it is picked apart as invalid. Will we say the same for Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Baptist, Sufi, wicca? All of the religions i listed have influences from other cultures or completely unheard of doctrine, but are accepted as ways of life for those who choose. It seems that only the Nation of Islam, it's leadership, and followers are the only ppl who are classified as delusional to believe what they do.

So the reason why this is a very bad documentary is because the presentation is very good and a decent job was done in the production so its interesting and sounds legitimate. But if we had not known that several claims had been absolutely debunked but they were presented as fact in this documentary. One example is that picture of wallace DODD FORD 1926 San Quinton mug shot being passed off as Master Fard Muhammad . We know that these were not the same men. Its like this person tries to present history but she takes the negative opinion and presents it as fact. For example her belief that its more about money than the religious beliefs or the claims that the kkk "protects " the nation of Islam just because Elijah Muhammad had people negotiate with them. The NOI is almost 100 years young and continues to change the society in every generation and has not compromised the core principles and values its not perfect but what group is? More good than bad has come to us

Hello, The picture you referenced is believed to be an existing picture of Master Fard by some historians. However, I say in the documentary that Master Fard’s identity has never been confirmed. The NOI admits that Master Fard was arrested/interrogated by police before his 1934 departure. I also never said the KKK “protects” the NOI. I recounted a meeting where a KKK group offered the NOI protection in exchange for their commitment to segregation and any information on MLK’s whereabouts. They declined to give any information on MLK. The financial aspect is often overlooked by outsiders. It’s an interesting and important part of the organization since the NOI promoted the idea of black cooperative economics. Thank you for watching and commenting.

@@blkbleaf you probably researched so much controversy and cointel-pro disinformation that you completely forgot to understand how most people and their families are positively influenced by learning the teaching of the NOI and becoming members whether they stay active or not. I didn't even hear a basic philosophy breakdown of Elijah Muhammads books. I heard you say that a "core" part of the teaching is that all whites are evil and devils. It is true that we teach that but the NOI definition of devil and God is different from what the average person would understand and those definitions are written in the core texts ( Supreme Wisdom, message to the black man , holy quran) . I was speaking historically. According to when each figure rose to prominence. And yes, The Hon. Elijah Muhammad stated that he believed he was finishing their work --> "I have always had a very high opinion of the late Noble Drew Ali and Marcus Garvey and admired their courage in helping our people (the so-called Negroes) and appreciated their work. Both of these men were fine Muslims. The followers of Noble Drew Ali and Marcus Garvey should now follow me and co-operate with us and in our work because we are only trying to finish up what those before us had started" - Chapter entitled "The Late Noble Drew Ali and Marcus Garvey" from "The Supreme Wisdom" Vol 2. and Marcus Garvey was inspired to create the UNIA after reading Booker T. Washington book "Up from slavery". Thanks for the comment!

@BLKBLEAF historically according to limited research of history combined with even more limitations with regards to the Nation of Islam specific history. Meaning Elijah Muhammad taught a right and exact message that doesn't need adding of taking away for fear to misleading the very ones he was teaching. The history he taught took us back to the creation of the sun and even to the birth of his teacher Master Fard Muhammad. When others choose to mention Elijah Muhammad in the context outside of his direct teaching but added a little of what he taught to prove a point it become misleading and tricknology. You can mention a quote that Elijah Muhammad had an high opinion fie these two men. But with true historical research and scholar you could find many places where he said he was not a Follower of these two men but only one. Master Fard Muhammad. You can try and mislead the people with your propaganda and opinions but why put it out as history if you are not going to do the proper research. These one quote that are misinterpreted but people run with it to chase some recognition when you could do the right thing by telling the whole truth will only leave you at a dead end.

@@blkbleaf when speaking historically its best to stick with the facts. And you can get directly all of what Elijah muhammad said with regards to drew ali and Marcus garvey. If you are going to talk about the Nation of Islam and call it a documentary then it can only come from Elijah Muhammad exclusively to have any real truth or relevance to it. Otherwise you are added the enemies doctrine that has been against the Nation of Islam from the origin. Nice attempt. But my ears burned too much I couldn't continue from fear of being mislead.

I didn’t say he was a “follower” of those two in this documentary. I said those movements laid the groundwork for the emergence of the NOI which is true. Also, The Hon. Elijah Muhammad authored the Supreme Wisdom Vol. 1 and 2. So those are his words regarding Noble Ali and Marcus Garvey. He said he was finishing their work.
