I am making this song as I am facing situations that caused my heart to be very sorrowful everyday. Sometimes it feels better not to think about them because they are so painful. But the Psalmist teach us to pour out our heart instead of brushing it off.
The words of Psalm 13:1-4 describes what my struggle perfectly:
"How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken."
When we face difficult situations (ex: lost relationships that are precious to us), often our focus is to get back the things we lost in the past. That is our plan. But he has a better, bigger, wiser, and more certain plan than we are (2 Samuel 7). The sorrowful situations we face tells a deeper problem. The problem of sin (Daniel 9, Psalm 51) - that our relationship with God is very broken and we are unable to fix that even though we do all kinds of good things. But Christ is committed to save us. He yearns for our repentance more than we are. He yearns to restore our relationship with him. And he often does it in the way that is puzzling and painful. All the things we face are meant to bring us closer and more like him - that is his bigger and better plan. We may not know how it will work. Sometimes it feels so impossible that our hearts can change. Yet, he promised that he will sanctify, cleanse our heart, give us his Spirit, seek us, and bring us to him. Because we are his children. He will do so not on the basis of our righteousness, but because he is merciful.
We may not return to where we were at. But things can be better because in God there is redemption. The old has passed away, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). We focus on repenting (the new) and not getting what we've lost (old). He will help us to repent today and tomorrow. That is our hope. Repenting is not an easy but a messy process. We'll fail daily. We'll feel weak. We'll feel that it is impossible. There will be days we want to give up. It is okay to be weak, because we can continuously depend on him. Come to Jesus in all of your weakness. In weakness is strength (2 Corinthians 12). We trust not in our strength and ability to fix ourselves but in his promise to take away our hearts of stone and give us a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36-37). "The bud may have a bitter taste, but sweet will be the flower." And that flower is to be more like who Jesus is. That is our goal and journey of life.
Lyrics:
God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea
and rides upon the storm.
Deep in unfathomable mines
of never-failing skill;
He treasures up His bright designs,
and works His sov'reign will.
Chorus:
Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
but trust Him for His grace;
behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
Judge-not the Lord by feeble sense,
but trust Him for His grace;
behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.
God is His own interpreter,
and He will make it plain.
Bridge:
His purposes will ripen fast,
unfolding every hour;
the bud may have a bitter taste,
but sweet will be the flow'r.
