It’s to keep his enemies uncertain and more willing to lower their guard. That way they have no idea how powerful he really is. And yes, Odin was powerful AF. He would have killed Kratos and Atreus if Freya/Frigg didn’t intervene. And even then he was still able to keep them on the ropes.

One is a a teenager god that wants Odin to stop the fight peacefully, one is an weary old god following his teenager son gods lead, and the other one is the ex-wife goddess that actually has a vendetta. Kratos was never enraged during the Odin fight, neither did Atreus...now that I think about it, only Freya was more into wanting to kill Odin. There was literally nothing in Odin's arsenal that can kill Kratos, he can kill Atreus, but that would serve to enrage Kratos. Odin's strongest weapon is Gungnir, same weapon that killed Ymir with a single strike, and he did use it on Kratos, only for Kratos to just shrug it off like nothing. Odin, disguised as Tyr, was surprised to know that Kratos can just casually walk in and out of the Light of Alfheim, a small speck of the Light was used to banish the dark fog that Odin used to block the mountain path to get to Mimir and the last known portal to Joutenheim. There was literally nothing that Odin can do to kill Kratos nor push him to use every once of his power to defeat.

One of the craziest things i seen about kratos is that the game makers confirmed that due to gaming mechanics they made hermes very slow as you can see he is just like 200km/h at most, but they confirmed that during their battle kratos and hermes were chasing around mount olympus faster than light, so don't be surprised if kratos taking down a whole pantheon, matching titans in strenght, mathing hermes in power, matching ares as the god of war and winning against all of them
