Great episode Brett! I’d love for you to do a deep dive like this on Inside Zone. Mainly cause my team, the Eagles, are more of an Inside Zone heavy run scheme. They’re undoubtedly the best in the league at it having averaged a crazy 19.99 EPA running it in 2021 while the highest Outside Zone EPA was the Chargers at 6.10. I’d be curious to learn about the advantages it gives you and why the Eagles are so efficient at it. The fact the Eagles can get anywhere from 2-3x the EPA any team running ‘Gods Favorite Run Play’ seems pretty incredible to me. Is it just Philly having better Jimmy’s & Joe’s + arguably the best OL coach (no disrespect to Callahan) in the NFL? Does Outside Zone just lead to more negative EPA plays than Inside Zone due to it being more of a horizontal play with a lot of moving parts? I’d like to learn more about mid zone as well if you just want to touch on all of it.

Brett, found your channel a few months ago and this is absolutely excellent. I played football for 10 years (OLine) and I learn SO MUCH from each video (except this one - we ran a lot of outside zone and this threw me back to the film room in August). This is exactly what I want in a football content youtube channel. I never played football, but I WANT to "get it" as best I can. There's a big gap between the talking heads and the deeply technical stuff (mostly aimed at highschool football coaches). I've requested this before and will request it again: A *FULL* introduction to offensive *and* defensive formations and concepts. I'm talking route trees and concepts (e.g., smash, dagger, flood), philosophy behind under center and shotgun, etc. on the offense. Cover 0-3, 6, and 9, man, coverage system concepts (e.g., Fangio v... others...). I would watch all of it. Perhaps multiple times.

This would have to be a full series because there's no way to go over all those in just a handful of videos. And at that point I'd encourage you to look at his deep dives. He covers a lot of concepts and their names often enough. He just did a whole video on the Tampa 2 defense, it's origin, what it comes from, how it works, what situations is it for and how to set it up effectively. But I agree he should compile them in a playlist and then make it a series he revisits regularly

A coach once explained blocking to me as train tracks. A lot of times people think as blocking similar to man defense in basketball where you block a certain guy. But you block a track and anyone who runs into that track. Pre snap you have to determine what the track is and post snap you just find anyone that is in the tracks and put them on their ass. Outside zone is the perfect example of that

Those Denver teams were the best at blocking it IMHO. New rules now on cuts so it isn't as pretty. Dudes would be talking trash and Mark Schlereth would just laugh and say "Watch your knees" ;-) If the d-line works hard to maintain gap integrity then the backside cut chops them down. If they protect themselves from the cut then massive gaps open front side.

This specific iteration of outside zone, from the Shanahan coaching/offensive tree is mostly referred to as "wide zone" now for anyone interested in learning more. If you look up outside zone you're going to get spread zone and spread buck sweep. Thanks for the video. Definitely subscribing.

Raheem's path on that cutback vs. the Ravens looked a lot like a puck carrier standing up a hockey defenseman while entering the zone. The way the linebacker gets stuck in the middle of his stance: Raheem gone.

Surprised Brett didn't mention that this zone blocking scheme started with the Packers and Vince Lombardi's run to daylight. Which was only stopped by Landry's Cowboy flex defense designed to protect the middle linebacker from being blocked. Unfortunately the flex's Achilles heel was the wide open passing schemes now in place.

I absolutely loved it. It has the right amount of details for any casual viewer (of football, in general) to actually follow. It will be fun to follow it up with how a good defense can counter it (other than a sloppy execution by offense). After all, football is also a chess game between the offense and defense. This is great. If you wanna do inside zone please do! One thing you mentioned in passing that I think is very underrated is the running path of the running back. For instance in your example at the end with the Ravens on D with outside leverage, the way the running back appears to be taking an outside path but then bouncing back inside makes it easier to block on that side. The running back can greatly improve the success of the blocks on that side and therefore get more yards on the play. 👍🏼

Well said. 2 things. First the outside zone with Mostert was undefendable. If the defense did everything correct, it still was usually positive yardage. However, if just 1 defender over or under pursued, his speed (turned into power) and balance was insane, he would beat the defender to the point of impact get through the arm tackle and run away from everyone. The second point, that 2019 team was SOOOO GOOOOD at faking blocks. Kittle and juz would run by the EMLOS after getting him in the habit of taking them on, and the runner would just run right by. Then the OL would "lose" blocks to DL. Richburg would "try" for a reach block on the 3T to get them to get down the line. Then seal the inside for the counter while another blocker is pulling to lead through. Those 2 Packers and Viking games are masterpieces.

15:20 that block isn't impossible for a backside guard and center. The only reason it doesn't work consistently is because your Center leaves you hanging when going against a shade or a 1 back side, your BSG is just dumpy and lazy, or your whole unit has no dawg in them. I was always coached to take care of 1st level 1st so as elementary as this scheme is, as an OL the emphasis on pad level, feet and technique is paramount and underrated. I love the rest of the analysis.

I watched the early 2000s era bucs as a kid and fell off of football once the gruden era turned sour, and returned back to watching only 2 years ago. As somebody who’s never played football this is enormously helpful in understanding the function and potential outcomes of what seem like somewhat basic concepts when watching the games live without any firsthand knowledge or experience. I was just talking to a buddy about wanting videos like these exactly. Of any potential videos I would like to see, perhaps taking the three most common modern passing schemes (Flood, sail, mesh just by example) and explain the strengths and weaknesses of the appropriate defensive coverage responses to those schemes. As a layman I understand the basic principals of zone and man but don’t have a very nuanced understanding of what advanced schemes live and die by in relation to the routes receivers take and the need to account for the threat of the run. PS the Tampa 2 vid rules

Awesome video, Brett. I think this "play breakdown' video would have benefited from a clear description at some point of why the play is called what it is. For example, with "Outside Zone", why is it called that? What is "outside" about it when, as you explained in the video, the RB can bounce the run inside the tackle. What is "zone" about it when it seemed the play is designed initially to go through a specific "gap" vacated by the DL. And what makes "inside zone" inside zone, when outside zone can be run inside the tackle? For viewers who've never played the game I think explaining all of this would be very helpful :) Keep up the great work (including with my LA Chargers).

We used this a ton in highschool we called the blocking assignment a scoop block and then between the play side guard and tackle an ace block on the 3 and we basically just used the tackle to nail the 3 and then go look for work wether it was the play side, backside or a poor safety tackles love head hunting and from this angle it’s so easy to tell what’s coming based off the center guard tackle and tes alignment guard and tackle are in closer on that side and little is out further than normal to bring the end way out making his job easier creating that big ass hole on the bubble it was a staple of what we did and we probably ran it 25+ times a game
