@NICK COIN Ah, I see that you are in two out of two threads I happened to read, saying the same things. Here's a challenge: assume that I agree that the Old Testament god is despicable and that interpreters of Jesus' life make reference to the Jewish scriptures only because it was their religious context. How do you interpret the life of Jesus without reference to the Old Testament? Do you see any value in the new testament?
@jamesdewane16424 жыл бұрын
@NICK COIN Thanks for a thoughtful reply. I have my own battles with Christians and I'm looking for useful approaches. Of the new testament, I've only studied Mark in detail, so what I think about Jesus is mostly from there. He seems to be a man inspired to raise the moral standard of the day. He calls everyone to better behaviour by describing the closeness of the "kingdom of god." The main reason he offered himself up to be killed was specifically to portray the difference between his vision of this kingdom and the popular understanding of it. By his example he hoped to teach that we are here to love and serve each other, not to kill. One can say that the old testament god shows a nurturing side as well as a wrathful side. Nothing about Jesus in Mark is wrathful, so one can say that part of his message is that the time for wrath is over. I believe Christians are on the losing side of an argument when they portray Jesus as the prophesied culmination of the old testament. Their responses to your posts are poor, consisting merely of appeals to ignore the offensive verses. It looks to me like Christians distort Jesus' message in their effort to salvage the OT. For me, God is a transcendent immanent presence that we are each an expression of. This is supported in Mark especially from 9:33 to 10:27. This view is not popular among people who profess publicly to be Christians. This seems to fit more easily with the Taoism expressed in lectures by Alan Watts; I am not any kind of expert in any eastern religion, but Buddhism and Taoism don't include any concept of a personified all-father like Yahweh. When Jesus refers to the Father, I don't get the sense that he means wrathful Yahweh. Again, I think he allowed himself to be tortured to death to make that exact point. So my quixotic struggle these days is about a conversation with Christians who might be able to see more sense in emphasizing our brotherhood with Jesus than in his dominion over us. Thanks for your time and any suggestions criticisms or questions.
@jamesdewane16424 жыл бұрын
@NICK COIN Again, thank you the thoughtful replies. I think you understand me well, especially when you observe that I'm cherry picking and (inadvertently) putting myself in the position of judge. I am not willing to limit my understanding of the Good News to authoritative pronouncements of any body, church-based or otherwise. If this ends your interest in what I have to say, then so be it, no offense taken, and none intended. Mark 12:28-34 says the greatest commandment is to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves. Jesus and the scribe to whom he he talking link these three so closely that I believe that Mark intends that we understand them to be one and the same. This is not a sanctioned or popular idea in Christianity. I do not intend to support any Christianity that I know of. The task I have set for myself is to re-introduce to Christians ideas that seem plain to me in Mark, and that conform to my own intuitions and experiences of and about the spiritual life. I understand that I am arguing from an unorthodox position, and one that may seem pointless to you. You spent some effort to show that the OT is accepted in its entirety by church authorities and that the OT includes instructions for followers of God to kill old men and babies. It's highly entertaining to watch Christians squirm and run away when you do this. With this you reveal them to be the weak-minded hypocrites or robotic and frightened personalities that they generally are. If i may, let me offer the argument they could and should be making but are terrified to face: in the same way that "an eye for an eye" was meant to moderate retaliatory behavior on its OT context, an instruction to "kill everyone and everything" seems to be a way to wean a society away from a raiding and booty-taking culture. If you get to keep what you steal in livestock and slaves, you may never decide to settle into a more peaceful way of life. Therefore, the injunction to kill was in fact a necessary step toward peace. If I were a normal Christian, I'm sure my brothers would try to dissuade me from expressing this explanation of genocide, but I bet anthropologists would see the logic. Your stance toward Christianity seems to be that you would like to use scripture to force Christians to face up to the horror of their faith and thus abandon it. Do I understand your intention? My project is similar: I want to use scripture to wake up Christians to the reality of our shared divinity. Do you have other motives? What is your alternative to a Christian view of life? (You already expressed this in part.) Do you have a sense of what is sacred? What gives you the motivation to pursue this activity? This is a more stimulating exchange than I have had with any Christian. Thank you.
@jamesdewane16424 жыл бұрын
@NICK COIN It occurs to me that our internal dialogs are different, but they result in similar if not identical ethics. It may be that my definition of God is so broad as to be a form of atheism. Does the concept of earthly existence as a school or training ground make any sense to to you? Have you looked at the Hindu idea of existence as a kind of game of hide and seek that divinity plays with itself? My bias toward an all-encompassing divinity rather than toward atheism comes from some personal experiences. Information seems to travel around in ways that science cannot explain. I wish you success with your project. Very enjoyable to converse with you.

Ravi has always been one of my favorite Teachers of God’s Word. He is one of the Greatest Apologists of the 20th and into the 21st Century. I was crushed to hear of the allegations against him. Almost immediately after his passing, The World and The Church took quickly to smearing his name. I’m not defending anything that may have been wrong. My point and place is that Christians are always the FIRST to shoot their own wounded. How many of us prayed for Ravi and his family during all of this? My heart is torn over all of that happened. We are ALL fallible in life. God said King David was a man after His own heart. David’s sins were great. One day we will ALL give account for our time on Earth. I will always continue to grow from Ravi’s teachings. We lost one of The Best. The Adversary plotted against this man. John 14:6

13:30 and following... Unto us a child was born, the Son was given. (Ravi says that Jesus always existed since the beginning.) But we came into being. There was a time when we were not, and then we were created. So this is what keeps me from really getting into this. I believe that the Good News is that we share in the Christ-hood and in divinity. Ravi asserts a fundamental difference in kind between the Christ and humanity, and I cannot see how that fits with a large number of verses, especially, "Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes not only me but also the one who sent me." More importantly, my personal experience and intuition is that we all share in the divinity. Did Jesus do important work to reorient the world? Absolutely. Do I like Ravi's poetry? Yes. Do I accept that I and humanity are different in kind from Jesus? No. The Good News is that we are each a part of the divine Sonship.

Ravi Zacharias was a sinner like the rest of us. God sometimes lets what He hates happen to accomplish what He loves. I write it here because I have no one to talk to. I broke up with my girlfriend who is very smart but the most worldly and secular atheist. My relationship with her did not have God in it. We broke up as I suddenly started questioning myself, is this real love, do I really love her, why dont I feel loved? I told her this, that I felt empty even when I was with her. I loved her, I did everything for her, I sacrificed alot of my things. But it felt hollow. So we broke up.... It hurt . like . hell. Soon after, I started reading the Bible. I started praying everyday crying. Both which I hardly ever did. I moaned my eyes and heart out every single day for over a month. Having doubts, cursing God for not putting me out of this depression and misery. It is still on going. All this happened recently. And I came across this video and it answered quite a lot. So I wanted to ask those who read this : am I supposed to take her back? Is she a task given to me for me to change her? She is long over me, but I just can not seem to forget her. It isnt because of love that I cant, but something else. I dont know what. But Am I supposed to guide her to Christ? Reading the Bible and praying non stop, I feel reborn and new, most of my bad habits and thoughts went away, my way of thinking changed, but no matter what I do, I cry and cry about her. She will never ever believe God anyways. I really dont know what God wants me to do with her. I know God took me away from her because I was getting further away from him with her, but if he did, why can I not get over her? Is it just that every breakups are like this? Is it normal?
