When this album came out, my wife and I were travelling from The Bahamas on a shopping/supplies trip to Fort Lauderdale. My wife was held in Nassau because of passport problems and I agreed to go ahead and get the stuff we needed. Imagine my delight when she showed up at the hotel, having sorted out the paperwork, and I was able to play this fantastic record as a backdrop to our reunion.

This song strips all away, and just leaves us, loving ourselves. Todd is my first experience of a gentle man, when I grew up, my father being intense. Todd comes to me in dreams, and brings us all the intelligence and positivity, that this gorgeous world needs. I love Todd, his soul soars with mine.

LYRICS: Nearly everyone I know claims to have heard your voice And every time they do, I know I should rejoice Because one day I'm sure you'll break your silence And speak just to me But I feel like time's running out My heart is, my heart is filling with doubt And god said... I don't dwell upon you, I dwell on something else I am not really here, so get over your self I've tried to follow every rule they said you handed down And spread the sacred testimony all around But still the others seem to have your ear but never will I Have I displeased you somehow? Can't help, can't help feeling left out And god said... There's no anger in me, you must mean someone else Cause it's not me that you see, you're looking at yourself And I won't give you a prize instead of someone else Cause I don't play favorites, so get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over get over get over get over Is it my fear, is it my pride, is it my vanity? Should your name just be denied to save my sanity? What is the price I need to pay to have what others seem to grasp so easily? Pity your servant your slave Who'll kiss, who'll kiss your feet to be saved Save me, save me God said... You are not serving me, you're serving something else Cause I don't need to be pleased, just get over yourself You can't suck up, up to me, I know you all too well But I don't dwell upon you, so get over yourself Cause you're not praying to me, you're praying to yourself And you're not worshiping me, you're worshiping yourself And you will kill in my name and heaven knows what else When you can't prove I exist, so get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over yourself Just get over get over get over get over yourself

Rundgren: Well I don't practice any formal sort of religion but, in that sense, I'm very comfortable with a lot of Buddhist philosophy mostly because it doesn't dwell on questions about the personality of the creator as so many religions do. Original sin to me was Man's self awareness and as soon as he became aware of himself he did so as relative to all other things and it wasn't good enough for man to just be one of those things-he had to be the most important thing and that's why the personality of God was invented. So when people ask me if I'm an atheist I say no, I just don't think we can understand the nature of what's at the bottom of all existence. It doesn't hurt us to think about it but when you become absolutely sure that you know, you're about as far away as you can possibly get.

The word 'God' is a Title. The word 'Person' denotes a human being be it male or female...we would never dare call Todd Rundgren "person" only because we already know who he is by his name...so the same should be with God we seek to know[by His name] ..Mankind, most of anyway, has wreaked havoc upon himself looking for God in all the false places I feel we all can rest assured that we may find who the true God really is & how much His love is for each one of us, can be revealed-- .In my old KingJamesBIBLE, finding God's personal name in the book of Psalms 83:18 (and other scriptures) frees my mind every time I see find the divine name. I love Todd Rundgren's music very much.He seems to be very God-like in his wonderfully crafted songs that have heart , spirit of soul and also ...love(the true version of, that is)

Me too. Todd is a wonderful musician and lyric-writer. I think he should now do a role as an actor in a conceptual 2-hour film with just the right film director, at his current age with all he's experienced. something beyond music where his character and articulation shine. it would be pleasantly unexpected, yet show his personality in a great light with the right script. seems we all did. spirit-beings cast away temporarily from God/ (source of everything) directed into a correction-institute world of semi-chaos, places of the outer darkness where all rebellious souls are incarnated as part of a spiritual process, to be shown what life is like outside of God where things are humbling, mysterious and unpleasant, surrounded by all different kinds of selfish souls. It is a lesson of the heart, not the mind so much at all.

… If a soul hardens in selfish-pride, then they misunderstand the purpose of this form of life. and then they have to go around the cycle all over again, until in their own free will they awaken out of selfish things and the heart changes = Then, they move back toward God's Love. When we are thinking about the well-being of others, then we understand why we are in this kind of reality, the closer we move towards God's love in our decisions and attitude, the better life becomes. Yet we must learn unselfish logic to be genuine
@abstract85188 жыл бұрын
that makes sense to me. in a symbolic basic way, the devil symbolizes humanity rather a person. we are all metaphorically-speaking, the devil. and hell is symbolic of earth. Some get messages from lyrical content. Some like to determine, interpret, define, analyze, theorize, proselytize... with some apparent intention. Some like musical tones, timbres, soundscapes, layering, harmonization, melody, without the slightest regard for any lyrical content , or any kind search for some deep meaning or epiphany at all. For some, the words could be anything; they could be complete and utter nonsense, and it would matter not one bit. The sonic content would still be enough to dig on.

It seems to me that Todd is singing about why God (the father) had to send his son (Jesus) to touch humanity. When Jesus returned to heaven he gave his (Spirit) who would possess those who would take up their cross and follow. This doesn't mean die/dead. It means that "if any man would follow me, let him deny himself, take up the cross, and follow". This is the end for all of us - death. The song is about Jesus' statement..... 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
