The original version of "God Save the King" was composed in 1745 during the reign of King George II of Great Britain. It was primarily used as a patriotic song to show support for the British monarchy and became especially popular during times of national significance.
The song's words are believed to have been made in support of George II against the Jacobite's, who revolted the same year. The melody of the song though is much older, it supposedly appears in a 1680s French composition by Lully, and even further back sharing a very similar tune to works of John Bull in the 1590s and 1600s. It's most likely Elizabethan in origin.
