What a touching performance and arrangement. Particularly on "send her victorious," it sounded a bit more melancholy than the standard arrangement, which is fitting.

You have a great ear! This same arrangement movingly played by the Philadelphia Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall the day of her death.

I have an interesting history. I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland by a woman who had dual citizenship -- she was born in Scotland, emigrated to the US. She "got into trouble", and went to Scotland to hide out with her parents until she'd birthed me, then as soon as we were both able to travel, we both came back to Southern California, and I was put up for adoption, since it was then quite a taboo to be a single mother in the mid-1950s. My adoptive parents also were British (Mum -- Yorkshire), and Scottish (Dad, born in Glasgow). I was steeped in the British/Scottish lifestyles and was very carefully taught my manners in the tradition of the many children who came up in the UK. My accent turned out to be a very interesting mish-mash of Mum's North-of England accent and Dad's gutteral Clydeside Scottish accent. Long story short, I still have a great respect for the UK and its many years of tradition, and I know this tune both as the secondary American National Anthem ("My County 'Tis Of Thee"), and also as "God Save the Queen" (now God Save the King"). I had the thrill of playing this organ in the summer of 1976 while Dr. Keith Chapman was still the titulaire there. I had just graduated from the University of Southern California with my Masters in Church Music, and was going through Army boot camp at nearby Fort Dix, NJ. I was visiting longtime family friends who lived in a Philadelphia suburb over a weekend pass. I signed the guest register, PFC G. Mark Caldwell, MCHMus. This caught the attention of Dr. Chapman, so he offered me "hands-on" for the 10am concert. I was a "special" for the concert.

I played this Sunday morning to conclude the church service. I've always thought the America lyrics and this tune should be our national anthem. I love the Star Spangled Banner but My Country Tis of Thee is more descriptive of who we are as a nation overall and not just one event, important as it is. I suppose the references to God would offend too many people. Rest in peace, Your Majesty and thank you-- for everything.
@emperornapoleon62042 жыл бұрын
I played it on Sunday as well (trumpet though). With it being 9/11, I thought the tune would resonate with everyone for both reasons. It felt too right!
