The reason Japan can crank out new characters is because they could care less about race/gender/xxx issues. I mean... all of their characters are reskins in a sense. They just mash archetypes and tropes together into new variations. You apparently haven't consumed that much anime or manga if you haven't recognized the same archetypes and tropes that are commonly used, to the point that the community has entire jokes on characters being so similar to each other. It works, not because they're ''original and brand new", but because they take fresh takes on old ideas and put them in an unlimitedly creative setting. Here is a back story. Fat boy is diabetic and will on occasions stop in the middle of a fight and eat a Hershey bar to get his sugar levels back to normal. Black Gambit side gig is working at a minority run beauty salon. Carrot top's whole income is from pulling SSD because she has to wear special glasses because of her optic lasers. And as for the other two ... who knows and who even cares. Back story for the original characters took decades to flush out. And why? Because the whole comic lines were based on their interactions with each other while hanging out at the Mansion.

Japan has a VERY simple model for cranking out new characters. You have weekly magazines like Shonen Jump that put out a TON of new chapters (10-20 pages on average) for a bunch of different stories. Because there are a bunch of stories in each issue, they can have mainstays that will guarantee sales, and they can have others where they can afford to take risks. In addition, there's a tradition of writing text-version of stories as webnovels. The good ones get licensed and redone as published light novels, and the good ones of those get serialized as manga. The good manga then becomes anime. The result is a culture of experimentation. Artists are also allowed to write doujinshi (fan mangas), so there's a mechanism for finding new, skilled artists. It's pretty much the OPPOSITE of how things are done in the US.

One thing I liked about Cassandra Cain (Batgirl/Orphan) is that she was illiterate. Throughout the series, you would see her trying to learn to read. And it made her relatable to people with learning disorders and earned the empathy of those who don't.

I really don't see how this would screw up the industry in all honesty. Derivative characters, clones, and copycats have been an industry staple forever, it's not exactly a modern problem. And this "youthful" social media angle is just a sign of the times whether we like it or not. Let's be honest here, who do we think these new characters are being created for? It's not for readers in their late 20's, 30's, or 40's, it's for the younger generations. I'm willing to wager that the majority of us got into comics as kids ourselves. But a good character will stand the test of time, and bad characters get forgotten. It's happened before, it'll happen again. If the creators start whining and playing victim if they fail, who cares. Getting pressed and giving them any sort of attention is exactly what keeps them going.

Kate Bishop, teen Hawkeye who is also a girl! You get my point. There's potential to explore, but these folks fumbled the marketing entirely. They had to make an elevator pitch and failed to impress, so now they their work cut out for them. "They have elaborate backstories!" but failed to hint at any of it. Whether they actually do have elaborate backstories or if all they have really is TikTok and Instagram remains to be seen. Objectively, I'd be curious to know why they're emulating the x-men. As readers we know the x-men are good guys, but within the world of marvel comics they're not seen the same way. The X-men have always been hated and feared. At one point they became x-force and posed as mutant hunters. They've openly waged war against the Avengers who are viewed by the public in a much more positive light. Several of them got the Phoenix, became gods, and reshaped the world at their whim. They formed their own nation now and are essentially a strike force for said nation. In a lot of ways, the public within the comics has no reason to see them as heroes. So what brought these kids together specifically with the intent of emulating them. THAT'S the angle I'd pursue if I was a writer trying to advertise these characters. But if it ends up being lazy like "they were 5 friends who got mutant powers of the X-men, it's their destiny" then hell no, lazy writing. And I'm calling it now, I doubt they'll have these aliases for long. I'd bet on a team up with the actual X-men who then encourage them to be their own heroes or some other comic trope, at which point they'll switch it up.

TBF, there is a core societal issue they can work with - the PR on mutants is abysmal and maybe a new generation that are relatable can be accepted and it'll be all about pushing back on narratives crafted by media. To answer your question; it’s because the Japanese manga writers actually enjoy creating characters and story’s and aren’t just doing it to get a rise out of people. It’s been shown people at Marvel, DC and some of the others don’t even care enough to do the bare minimum of research so why would they take the time to think up new characters, powers, outfits, etc. without just bastardizing previous interpretations

They do it easily in Japan because they aren't woke in Japan. They have so much competition there they have to dig deep to get the unique characters and backgrounds written out. Entertainment in America is always the "how quick can we milk this until there isn't anything left" approach. This is why Marvel's legacy characters get re-written over and over again, but the base character of who they are rewriting are always the same.
