Thanks Jacob! I have really enjoyed the guitar and definitely recommend it. When you hear and play it, you would think it costs much more than it does. I would note that since it doesn't have a cutaway it's difficult to play much above the fifteenth fret. For what I plan on using it for (jazz/solo guitar) I don't see that being an issue, but if you're used to playing stuff high up on the neck it's something to think about. They do make a kingpin ii which has cutaway to help access higher frets as well as adds a bridge pickup. I personally never use the bridge pickup on these types of guitars, so I was happy to save the money (think kingpin ii is around $300 more), but if you want a little more variety in tones and easier access to higher frets it might be worth checking the kingpin ii out.

Thanks Randy! I had never owned or played a Godin before and overall have been impressed by this guitar. I think it's a really good value and the P90 that comes with it sounds good. You can get a nice jazz sound but a variety of some other tones as well. It has a little buzz (as you would expect from a P90) but certainly manageable from my experiences so far.

Josh, just a fantastic review/demo. I've been on the fence about this guitar and the P-90, and you really helped me decide to make the leap. What a great value! I watched your other vid with the Bartolini as well. Excellent. I saw that you used a Quilter amp in that vid, which I am also looking at. My question..are you pretty happy with the Quilter? Thinking of getting the Cub with 12" speaker. Thanks for the demo!
@sheifiproductions
@sheifiproductions Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! The Kingpin is a super cool guitar and definitely one of the best values. The stock P-90 does sound really good! Only reason I changed it out is I got really into Tuck Andress and wanted to try his bartolini signature pickup. While the bartolini pickup sounds amazing, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend changing pickup as stock one sounds really good. I’ve owned several quilter products and loved all of them!! Pretty much all of my solo guitar stuff (as well as some of new projects) we’re recorded with quilter amps. I mainly used a tone block 200 and a micropro mach 2 which both sound great. I recently bought the Superblock us and it’s currently my favorite! Did a demo of it recently. I’m not as familiar with the cub series but I haven’t played any quilter product I didn’t like so I imagine it’s great!

@sheifiproductions
@sheifiproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex! If you're into jazz it sounds wonderful! It can also do some blues stuff well, depending on what kind of tone you like. It can get a nice clean sound and can handle some natural break-up or low distortion well. If you like a fair amount of gain in your blues tone I wouldn't recommend it,. as it will feedback (like any full hollow body). It's also not going to work great for most rock stuff as it will be prone to feedback. I think it does jazz great. it can also do some blues well and more acoustic/singer-songwriter kind of stuff. If you want a little more tonal diversity you might also want to check out the kingpin ii, as it has two pickups, so you could get some different sounds out of bridge pickup.

I've watched so many demos because this reminds me of my old early 1960s ES125TC (I got lucky; that guitar was sweet!!). Your demo is by far the most comprehensive and beautiful demo-- you played almost the entire fretboard. Many jazz players on KZbin don't emote: you play with such personality. I loved your Travis style picking! I saw a long demo where a guy was playing distorted power chords (NO!) and then just folk chords G, D, A. That's not a guitar review. This was brilliant! Thank you! Btw, this guitar comes with round .012 - .052 D'Adarrio "jazz" strings. They're $799 new now.

Thank you so much for the kind words!! Yea, one of the reasons I started doing some demos of some of the gear I like is I found it hard to find useful demos! Combination of people weren't always great guitar players and/or weren't using the guitar on how it was really intended to sound. I love this guitar! I bought it as I didn't have a L5 kind of style guitar in my lineup and really liked it for either straight-ahead jazz gigs or solo guitar stuff. I've ended up using it quite a lot!

I had the ES125TC which I regret selling... what a beautiful guitar. I always put .11s on that. It was rather thin sounding when unplugged, but the 5th Ave is twice as thick...so I think .11 - .50 would still sound great. Do you have any thoughts? I'll be using nickel wound strings. I enjoyed hearing you demo the guitar. I'm 99% a fingerstyle acoustic guitar player, and have hated every solid body electric guitar I've ever had. So I bought one of these and love it but for the way the P90 hums. No hum is why I preferred humbuckers, so I bought a Creamery "P90 sized hidden humbucker" with an Alnico 5 magnet. Health issues prevented me from installing it and then I forgot about it. I'll take this as a reminder to get 'er done now that the health stuff is squared away. Reason for watching videos on a guitar I already own? I'm approaching 70, thinning the herd and trying to decide whether to flog the Kingpin or a Loar LH-280. I would love to know what pickup you installed? Again, thanks for the tasty demo.

Thanks for the kind words and hope your health issues continue to improve! I ended up replacing the stock P90 (which I think actually sounded quite good) with a Bartolini 1CTA (Tuck Andress Model). I got really into Tuck's guitar playing a few years back and wanted to try and get a similar sound to his without spending thousands of dollars. The pickup sounds great! It's a humbucker so it's nice and quiet but it's much brighter and clearer than most neck humbuckers I've heard. The bartolini pickups aren't cheap but this one sounds great and is super "hi-fi" souding.

@sheifiproductions
@sheifiproductions 3 жыл бұрын
Being a full hollowbody, it’s not really designed for overdrive pedals. That being said, I did get a pretty good bluesy tone out of it with a tube screamer. You would need the volume to be relatively soft and gain not to be too high to avoid feedback. You will get a little buzz since it’s a single coil P90 pickup, but if the gain on pedal isn’t too high it’s not that noticeable when in mix.

Hi josh... I'm a solo singer-songwriter acoustic player. I strum and finger pick with my fingers. I'm getting older and want an easier play. Tell me will this sound full and warm enough to showcase my vocals the way an acoustic does. I currently play gigs with my Martin 000-15m with a K&K. Is this good for Eagles, America, James Taylor, ETC.... Even Blackbird type tunes . VERY interested. Your demo is the BEST on the tube . Thanks if you can answer me with any help. Take care, Frank

Frank, thank you so much for the kind words. I use this guitar for solo guitar gigs and more acoustic/duo gigs if I’m accompanying a singer and really like it. If you want more of a pure acoustic sound (with steel strings) you might want to check out Godin A series of guitars. I’ve never played one but looks like they might also fit what you’re looking for.

  @sheifiproductions Josh thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I really appreciate your experienced opinion. I will check the A-series guitars out you mentioned but I'm feeling pretty good about the 5th avenue now. Thanks again for your time and knowledge. Take care...

What case did you get for it?

I just use the soft case that came with guitar. I believe it’s considered a soft case but it actually has quite a bit of protection and is quite nice!

@@sheifiproductions they sound well balanced - do you happen to know the exact model? i have the same guitar but it cames with martin retro monel 11 which is ok for acoustic but feels too thin and not quite right plugged in

@@pierreg8562 Yea, I personally would put 12's or even 13's on this guitar. I find the 12s sound good and balanced and are still pretty versatile. I believe the guitar from the factory usually comes with 12s but don't know which brand or set they use. I personally use D'addario EJ21 "Jazz Light Gauge."

Do you miss the cutaway for jazz?
@sheifiproductions
@sheifiproductions 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on what style I’m playing, if it’s straight-ahead stuff I don’t miss it much but if it’s more contemporary style or fusion then yes. I primarily use it for solo guitar stuff. It’s definitely something to consider though before you buy it.

Thanks everyone for the comments on the Godin Kingpin video! I really appreciate it. I recently found and purchased a used Godin Stadium 59 in Desert Green and just posted a demo on it. I'm really digging these Godin guitars! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4Tdi2mKlLCXf6c
