That's not even what started this! The tweets that started all of these were these two here. x.com/godotengine/status/1839656658932306395 x.com/voxybuns/status/1839662806053818380 This is legitimately a low-tier joke post and not scary at all. They weren't in the video because this is milquetoast at best. The fact that all of this spiraled out of this post is absurd. 2. The guy who was the "Titanium Level Backer" was banned for telling them to keep out of politics. No, he was banned for spamming it across multiple social medias including their Discord. No other "financial backers" have been reported as banned. It's all the same image being passed around of the same ban. Every post states this as a plural "bans" yet it all goes back to the same singular ban. 3. Godot Cafe is the official Discord. No, it's actually discord.gg/godotengine as shown on their website. They used to have no official Discord but now have had one since June 2024. 4. They banned tons of people from the Github including that backer! Then why does he say he wasn't banned from Github here? x.com/LifeArtStudios/status/1840388220900544717 Why do all of the posts from locations like this just show a generic ban image with no names? x.com/Pirat_Nation/status/1840374511981482433 The only things that can be found regarding this are troll issues opened on the official git like this. github.com/godotengine/godot/issues/97700 5. They banned the creators of Godot! The creators are ​Juan Linietsky ( x.com/reduzio ) and Ariel Manzu ( No Twitter ) Juan turned off his Twitter due to the US election cycle and operates on Mastodon. He talks about it there and also dislikes the attacks on Godot. Neither were banned and there is no evidence of such. 6. Godot is using emails from their contact form to ban people from the Git repo! No, this didn't happen at all and there is no evidence of such. Really insane take to be honest. Bullshit around this has traveled faster than anything else. All of the fact checking above was done by me after the video came out. Literally had no idea this much misinformation about the subject had been brewing. People playing telephone game with outrageous statements and taking them as truth. I went through the comments and removed all of the "It came to me a dream" garbage as well. Going to record another video about this tonight because goddamn.

When this thing was happening then the whole of game dev circles (not just Godot) got flooded by thousands of keyboard warriors who started to spread this scenario. It was made up by the Foundation to justify their actions and somehow make themselves look like the good guys. Their life is social media pr and marketing. This event kicked off the entire controversy at play.

In this case he's wrong though. Godot Cafe is not JUST a Godot-adjacent discord server. It was the original official server, it is still listed in Godot's website. It shares mods and community with the official server. It really is just the same people. This was not friendly fire, this was a political attack against the general community, including banning of sponsors over very mild political opinions.

It was never official because there wasn't an official server. They just sent people there because it was a big community and some maintainers were part of it. When they created the official server, they asked the old server to be renamed. Now, people are free to be part of any server. It's an open server so the barrier of entry is very low. So it's very possible to recommend the server and then a new member needs to interact with a PoS person. That doesn't mean the server as a whole promotes this behavior nor that the foundation promotes this behavior.

This was not an accurate summary of what happened. it started on twitter where their was a post that some people thought was political (it literally had the word woke in it, but was not the end of the world), when people asked them to reframe from being political they went on a banning spree. Banning anyone who said anything about it, even if they were polite about their request. then on the unofficial discord the Xanax (don't know the spelling) went on a very hateful rant (his rant was pretty bad). the unofficial discord was the official one until very recently and has very strong connection to Gadot including common moderators and is promoted on their website. the Gadot group then apologized about the banning spree and asked people to contact them to be unbanned. But, in the request they gave out to be unbanned they asked for emails and used the emails to ban people from the repository. I don't think the initiating tweet would have been a big deal if they had not gone on a banning spree and then doubled down with the repository bans. They have also not done anything to distance themselves from Xanax (not sure of the spelling), but i think that was a secondary issue to the banning.

Sorry Thor, but I have to disagree with you about what has happened. I saw events unfold in real time. Godot Official account made a stupid tweet mocking another stupid tweet (saying that all games made with game engines are woke) which had little to none likes (so nobody even agreed with it). A lot of people said either "no politics" (including identity politics) or "just focus on the engine". Or both. Including one Titanium level backer. He and many-many others were banned. Which caused outrage, which caused more bans, etc. CM and xananax's messages just fueled the fire, but they were not the source. Godot founder wasn't at fault either. He played neutrality back then, but after dust has settled he said he supports CM on his Mastodon account. People were also banned for posting quotes of him btw. And the last piece - people also didn't like their complete non apology. Godot foundation framed the events as if was targeted harassment attack by bigots and didn't take any accountability for actions of their CM Edit: I forgot Starkium is a Titanium level backer. Not platinum. Fixed it. Edit 2: No Thor, this is not a conspiracy. I'm not blind nor illiterate. I know what I saw

IIRC the 'bad messages' were 8 years old (or thereabouts) and mainly directed at the mod's own racial identity (calling themselves a sand nword) as some ironic statement. Which a mod still shouldn't say, I won'd defend it as even slightly non-offensive. But at the same time, it transparently looks like people went looking, once again, for any shred of someone they want to cancel (often for being lgbt or openly very left-leaning) saying something objectionable. I've had people try and start shit with me for jokes I made over a decade ago. None of that is good faith, regardless of whether or not anyone actually said something offensive. So it's a shitshow. You've got young mods making offensive, if probably not directly hateful, statements, but then time passes and you've got people stirring that shit up because they made a statement telling people who don't support the existence of lgbt people to gtfo of their community.

To be fair, I don't understand the whole Twitter drama. From Godot side, some social media employee should've thought twice before posting shit like that. Then there's a mod on discord that shat himself over it, when his job is literally to keep cool. How do I know? 5 years of social media manager job exp, with high profile politicians and big corporations as clients. You don't know what "hate" is until you need to take action against someone wishing your client skinning alive. Unfortunately, people went batshit crazy. But that's understandable for an angry mob, just look at the stop killing games crowd. But that doesn't mean you can't keep professional about it. One's image online is a currency that is hard to earn.

The problems are these: Highlighting projects based on protected classes is bad. Blocking donors (or anyone for that matter) who suggest the product team sticks to making the product better is bad. Not realizing all of this as the leader of the product and protecting/encouraging the deranged instigator instead of canning it is also bad. A lot of bad stuff happened here and it's all just symptoms of a larger issue in which unqualified people are weaseling their ways into roles they clearly don't belong in in the name of diversity. It's just a bad case of damage control. One hand didn't know what the other was doing (posting). They didn't have a good PR crisis strategy ready and they should've known something will happen when you use woke on Twitter. In my opinion it's not a bad thing to show support for any community, when you are actually supporting them all. But they should just know better not to call themselves "woke". 0:30 It wasn't fan discord really, previously it was the official one until CM of Godot made new one, on top of that, most of the people who are under control of official Godot Discord (basically most of the mods) are the same people that moderate the "fan" (but in reality previously official) discord server. The Godot Cafe is still advertised on Godot website, meaning they still endorse them on top of that. There was one of the ex-mods from Godot Cafe that confirmed it. 2:30 There were people who were blocked previously despite never interacting with Godot before (but had views going against lgbt, sort of), this is strange, isn't it?

Basically, the way it started was some person intentionally trying to cause drama said games made with game engines are woke. The Twitter manager for Godot made a joking response about wanting to see people's woken games. They weren't saying make woke games. They were making fun of what the guy said. Then, you had a bunch of anti-woke people jumping in to take advantage of it pretending like Godot was being political and using that as an excuse to get toxic. Godot Twitter manager went overboard with SOME blocks on the Twitter account. Spiraled from there with the anti-woke cancel culture crowd trying to cancel Godot. Another group tried to hijack Godot's community using this as an excuse.

It was Godot Cafe, many people including myself thought it was the official server because it has 66,000 more members and comes up first in search. I quietly left the server and uninstalled Godot because the way they were still talking about people long after the event was just gross.

You unfortunately seem to be missing a bit of info. Firstly, that the moderator of the Fan Discord was ALSO a moderator of Gadot's official Discord, and the creator of Gadot even talked about it, after it came to light that this person frequently would say racial slurs. Not to mention that the person running the twitter wasn't just simply banning people in defense. They were ACTIVELY doing after people and picking fights, and a lot of backlash that came from that is what started a LOT of the swarm hatred. You're leaving out what is essentially vital information. First blood was drawn by people who were, at least, put in charge of Gadot public affairs, and they used that power to attack and berate, which resulted in a lot of the shit we see now. While Gadot itself may not be the cause of it, they had hired and put that person in charge. It now becomes their responsibility.

Unfortunately, Thor is having a higher than average number of bad takes recently. This and the stop killing games initiative. He misses or ignores absolutely crucial pieces of information in order to take an "I'm above all this pettiness" stance. The discord was unofficial but promoted and supported by official discord members. Many of the mods from one were mods from the other. And then they paid lipservice to condemning xananax, but gave a bigger portion of their communication to saying the harrassment is worse. Look up some screenshots of what that person said, because I can't say it here. Really heinous stuff

As someone who watched it happen all live before my eyes, I don't see that this "drama" was particularly caused by the moderator of the Cafe server (a server used as the official home for the godot COMMUNITY), and was actually caused by single tweet that lead to people looking for plenty of dirt to throw onto Godot. I feel this video gives some good context but I'm confused on why the full context of the initial wave of people targeting Godot was left out... (edited below) I'll include this that the twitter media manager for Godot made a tweet about "woke games", which "woke" can be seen as heavily political or radical, and a lot of people didn't want to be associated with that. They simply disagreed or showed their distaste and it lead to a lot more hatred then it should've. As someone who is gay (demi too), I absolutely agree with "focus on making a game engine and less political things", if they wanted to support LGBT game creators, they should've done that on the respective month or make some list they actively update. Not talk about "woke" when that typically has a bad reputation as a word...

@@crshsori7579 The biggest problem I saw was the twitter media manager making a tweet about "Wokedot games", which, as someone who is actively apart of LGBT communities, "woke" is a pretty politicized term and it upset a lot of people respectively. Had nothing to do with their political alignment, just the fact they didn't want a politicized twitter account about a game engine. And I respectively agree. The moderator of the unofficial community made some pretty bad comments and didn't represent Godot. Godot responded horribly still because they neglected the initial wave of dislike for their tweet.

That "Fan Discord" was posted on their official website and listed as their official Discord. It didn't become a "Fan Discord" until The Green Haired Gremlin started her crap and the official Twitter account started banning people for disagreeing. They then removed and changed the Discord link on their page. I was watching this from Day 1, laughing my butt off about it. It's sad and funny. But you have definitely gotten it wrong.

As an ex moderator for Godot, please don't spread misinformation Pirate. The CoC team offered us financial compensation, benefits and even online therapy. We also had to agree to the CoC rules, and if we didn't, we could get removed. If a user complained to the CoC team about a moderator, we could be removed. We were the OFFICIAL server for Godot and were linked directly for about over half a decade. It's not until the foundation was created and Nat was hired as the community manager did they remove the status and create their "official" server. FYI there are still people within the foundation that are a part of the "unofficial" server.
