For a small town on the south shore of Long Island, Sayville has some fascinating stories to tell, particularly in the 1930s. Its most famous resident, arguably, was Father Divine, a popular Black religious leader who preached that he was God Himself. Extremely charismatic, he built a nationwide following from his humble home in Sayville where he was the towns first Black homeowner. Father Divine had quite an interesting life and this video discusses some of the more notable moments. In addition, the video introduces other Sayville residents of the 1930s such as Theodore Roosevelt's cousin John E. Roosevelt as well as a zealous Catholic clergyman who had his own methods for protecting his flock from naughty movies in the Sayville Theater.
