I am no theologian, and struggle daily with humility. But, why are we having to explain things that Francis “meant”? I never hear a priest say the “pope” confuses people with his speech. Are those that question him wrong? Everything he says is ambiguous. There was a thing called Peronism in Argentina, read up on it, because it seems similar. Jesus was clear and concise in his language. Not a 43 page encyclical on same sex relationships that make your head spin.

I am not satisfied with Pope Francis' explanation. He had an opportunity to spread the Gospel, but didn't, instead validating other faiths as viable routes for salvation. This is a liberal interpretation of Catholic doctrine on the matter, and at it's heart is this - that the Catholic Church is necessary for salvation and that the fullness of the means of salvation subsists within the Catholic Church. That's not to say that someone who isn't Catholic cannot be saved, but given the Catholic Church's necessity in salvation (the necessary means through which salvation is made available to humanity), surely it is incumbent of the representative of God here on earth to promote that? Pope Francis remarks are coming very close to making the Church seem irrelevant.

The Pope’s comments were in the nature of courtesy, diplomacy and good manners. Those hearing him would not have taken him seriously. No Muslim wants to arrive at the Lord God of Israel, the one true God and his only Son, Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It was all just good manners - nothing in the nature of setting out the formal position of the Magisterium of the Church.

@@GodsCottage In the simplest of terms - a good Muslim is saved by righteousness of life, to which he is enabled by the grace of God, through the merits of the death of Jesus Christ on the cross applied to him, even if he is unaware of this. He is not saved by a belief in Allah or Mohammad, since the Muslim faith is, specifically, Anti Christ and rejects salvation through the death of Christ on the cross. So, yes, of course, you are right - a good Muslim may be saved, but he will not be saved because he is a Muslim, but in spite of it. The teaching of the Church on this point is quite clear.

Yes your right friendship is important to begin with when sharing with people of other faiths. Just a little story here I will relate that proves your point. I had a job a few years ago where I had helped a collegue, a young Seikh lassie to negotiate relationships at work. She had prior to that only worked in her family's corner shop. The workplace we were in was large with 3 levels of management and she was a little overwhelmed by it all. One day she asked me to pray for her that she would pass her exams for a professional qualification she had been undertaking. I was a little surprised that she had assumed that as an Irish person in Scotland that I was Catholic and more surprised when she said that she liked Catholics because Catholics honour good people and call them saints. With all due respect to you as a priest, I don’t agree with this whitewashing of Bergoglio’s statements. You can respect and love the people of other faiths without denying Jesus Christ. Bergoglio mentioned Jesus without words but made the Christian/Catholic faith equal to Buddhism, Hinduism, Sikhism, or Islam. He didn't speak in the sense that all the non-Christian/Catholic beliefs can lead to God if those people have never heard in their life of Jesus Christ, the Bible, or the Catholic Church. He clearly said every faith leads to God and salvation though he didn’t mention salvation explicitly. Furthermore, we are not all children of God. We are all first a creation of God and become children of God only through the trinitarian baptism formula and the faith in Jesus Christ that he sacrificed himself for our sins and by accepting him as our savior and redeemer. This is the true biblical and Catholic teaching, not what Bergoglio claimed. And Bergoglio even reaffirmed his statements later by saying every religion is a gift of God. If something is a gift of God, it's true because God is the truth. A false faith is not a present of God but rather one of the devil. If a Hindu, for example, worships the "goddess" Kali and serves her, it's surely not a gift of God and doesn't lead to the only true God, Jesus Christ, in union with the Father and Holy Spirit. God is holy and can't lie and lead the people to a wrong faith so Hinduism for example is surely no gift from God. This is also valid for every other non-Christian/Catholic religion. Bergoglio's task as pope is not to strengthen the people in their false faith, but to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ among them. Jesus Christ clearly said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. The downplaying of God's word I quoted above and ambiguous statements from Bergoglio is unfortunately systematically done by Bergoglio so it's justified to ask whether his statements are heretical.

But when a Samaritan on a journey came upon him, he looked at him and had compassion. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him."? Samaritans mixed worship of idols with the worship of the true God. Why did Jesus not say, "When a disciple ..."? @@GodsCottage I respect you as priest of Christ's church, and you are theologically surely much better than I as you studied it. But what does the parable of the Levit and Samaritan have to do with the topic we are discussing here? Nobody denies that those who worship a false God can commit acts of charity to their neighbours. Jesus didn't explain in this parable that there are many paths to God, but that every human being, no matter who e is, is our neighbour. Jesus responded with this parable to the provocative lawyer, "Who is my neighbour?" in the context with the great commandment 'You shall love God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your spirit and your neighbour as yourself'. It has nothing to do whether there are other religions as a path to God. Yes, contrary to the Levit and the priests who worship the true God, only the Samaritan fulfilled God's will. But it doesn't support the idea that every religion leads to God and is a gift of God, though God's spirit was working in the Samaritan. By the way, Augustine saw in the Samaritan Christ. The grace from God to acknowledge that Christ died for our sins on the cross on Golgotha and that we need Jesus Christ as our saviour and redeemer to receive salvation, and to inherit eternal life in Christ, is a gift from God. Not the worship and service to man-made "Gods" and "Goddesses" like Kali, Vishnu, Ganesh, Shiva or any other of the hundreds of different idols in Hinduism or the islamic Allah who has nothing to do with the true God Jesus Christ in union with the Father and Holy Spirit. Please don't tell me now, it's the same God. Muslims reject the doctrine of the Trinity and refuse to accept Jesus Christ as God. For them, he is only a prophet and human being like Mohammed. They put Mohammed over Jesus. It's surely not the same true God.

Thank you Father Doyle. These are excellent points. When Jesus was born the angels sang: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” God is pleased with those who do His will. His will is that we love our neighbour (like the good Samaritan did). Therefore, there may be those who have never heard about Jesus (or as in the case of the good Samaritan didn't follow Rabbinic Jewish law) but if they are loving their neighbour to the best of their ability then they are doing God's will and God is pleased with them. Sadly, by fighting among ourselves, and tearing down those who disagree with us, we are not practicing love and this sends the wrong message to the world. The beautiful thing about the Catholic Church is that our Sunday service is only about the worship of God and fellowship of man. I had an issue with the Born Again Christian woman friend of mine a few yes ago. I accepted her as a woman of a different faith. Unfortunately, she insisted that I remove my Miraculous Medal because she felt that it was blasphemous. I didn't comply. I forgave her because she's a good person but I was really hurt about the incident. She left the Catholic church and went to the Born Again Christian faith. They even have a whole service which attacks the Catholic Church. They're quite impertinent and overbearing. I don't pay attention to it. The Pope is right. People need to talk to each other and have respectful conversations. Many conversions could happen if people only showed courteousness, kindness and compassion toward each other. I also think that the Pope needs to be respected. Some things about the Pope upset me but I trust in Jesus and he's the Pope. @GodsCottage As I'm sure you know, the parable of the Good Samaritan was intended to shame the religious leaders who, despite having the law, had no mercy or compassion on the injured person (a Jew), yet a Samaritan - an outcast as far as Jews were concerned, stopped and took care of the man. We know that God is just and merciful, but in using a Samaritan's actions to contrast with those of the injured person's own religious leaders is a long way from saying that Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism etc are all valid or equal paths to arrive at God alongside Christianity/Catholicism. People who by conscience and good nature, may carry out God's will by doing such acts as the Samaritan, may be found in people without any faith at all. If a person's good deeds alone could save someone, then Christ's sacrifice would be meaningless.

Everything which the Pope says in his informal addresses must always be interpreted in the light of the formal teaching authority of the Church (the “Magisterium”). There is no possibility of the Pope accidentally altering a formal teaching of the Church. So, since the condemnation of the errors of syncretism, indifferentism, universalism, etc form part of the formal Magisterium of the Church (they are condemned in the Syllabus of Errors by Pope Pius IX) they remain condemned whatever informal comments the Pope might make. So, the Pope’s comments are hedged around by the protection of the Magisterium. A simple summary of what the Church actually teaches is that a good Moslem (for example) may be “saved” but if he is saved it can only be by way of the grace of God leading him to live a righteous life - what is clear is that he cannot be saved by worshipping Allah, because Allah is a false god and the Muslim religion denies the divinity of Jesus Christ and therefore, in its teachings, is in the nature of Anti-Christ - as a religion it is incapable, by definition, of leading to salvation, because it denies Christ, the only way to find salvation. However, a Muslim can be saved despite (definitely not because of) his Muslim faith. The Church makes all of this very clear. Clearly, in the context of an inter faith dialogue, the Pope didn’t want to state, point blank, to, for example, a Muslim in his audience “you won’t get to Heaven by following Mohammad or by worshiping a false god, Allah, since your religion denies Christ, the only way to find salvation.” That would have been too blunt. Nevertheless, that is what the Church does teach. The Pope, with his natural courtesy and good manners, said that he could not say that his religion was better than any other religion. He couldn’t - but the Catholic Church does, so he is protected and hedged around by the Magisterium of the Church.

No the Pope could in fact be in error, which I think He is, and it does not contradict Magisterial teachings. The Pope can in His Personal opinion can be wrong. Pope John XXII made 5 Homilies on the Beatific Vision between November 1331 and January 133, which was inconsistent with Sacred Scripture, The Church Fathers and the Scholastics. He was told by several Cardinals His Homilies had errors. In January of 1333 an English Dominican priest/theologian names Fr. Thomas Waley was in Pope John XXII's Church (Avignon papacy) herd one of His Homilies and then denounced Pope John XXII teaching as heretical. Fr. Waleys was arrested by the Inquisition at the request of John XXII. Cardinal Jacques Fournier (who would become Pope Benedict XII) and Durandus de St. Pourcian, Bishop of Meaux France also stated the Pope was in error. The Commission that the Pope Appointed did not fully support the Pope either. The Pope then asked for an assembly of Theologians to debate the issue at the University of Paris. In other words, Pope John XXII by this time tripled down. After the Franciscan General Gurial Ot gave support to Pope John XXII, the Dominican Theologians at Paris protested and an Assembly of Bishops met with all the Theologians at Paris and stated Pope John XXII was wrong, all the Blessed dead (Saints) see the Beatific vision. Given the tensions between Emperor Louis IV and Pope John XXII, He saw a chance to be seen as the Hero of Catholic Christendom and told the Cardinals he would back a Council of Cardinals to formally charge Pope John XXII with heresy and depose Him. Pope John XXII recanted and then died. Cardinal Jacques Fournier was elected as Pope and took the name Benedict XII (1334-1342), and He issued Benedictus Deus- On the Beatific Vision of God in The Constitution issued 1336 Dogmatically defined with a solemn Definition Beatific Vision. Pope John XXII by recanting His error/heretical teachings was never declared a Formal Heretic. So yes Popes can be wrong in their personal teachings. The Doctrine of Infallibility protects the Pope from Solemnly Defining a Dogma with Error when defining something ex cathedra. Thanks be to God that Pope Francis has said nothing that relates to Extraordinary Magesterium during His Papacy which tells me Christ is Still in charge of His Church

Until as recently as 1969 the Constitution of the Vatican City State provided for the imposition of the death penalty. The Pope now states in the Catechism that, for the first two thousand years, the Church taught erroneously on the question of the death penalty, because it had an erroneous understanding of the dignity of the human person. He has now corrected this error. When he addressed the Jesuit seminarians in Lisbon he assured them that, since he had altered the teaching of the Church on the death penalty and no one noticed, or cared, he would be able to alter the teaching of the Church on homosexuality for them as well. Pope Benedict XVI in his final book “What is a Christian” formally confirmed that, from the 1989s onwards, seminaries and houses of formation attracted in young men by offering them homosexual clubs, where they might live out their homosexual lifestyle discretely, while deceiving the world into thinking that they were living chaste, celibate, lives. There is agitation from some quarters, for example, the Jesuits, for the Church to alter its teaching to formally approve of this practice so that it can be openly acknowledged. Cardinal Hollerich, for example, has openly supported a falsification of the Catechism to permit this - as a result the Pope has preferred and advanced him in the Church - he is the Relator of the Synod. The Synod was intended to lead to a falsification of the Catechism, along the lines of the falsification relating to the death penalty, but, after the Fiducia Supplicans debacle, it became clear that the African Bishops would rebel. The Pope has dismissed the African Bishops as ignorant, uneducated, primitive peoples, lacking in such refinements as Jesuitical sophistry, yet he is still too cautious to risk a schism, so, knowing how the African Bishops would respond to his proposed falsification of the Catechism on the question of homosexuality, he might not pursue this now - in fact, since, as Primate of All Italy he is having to find huge sums of money to cover all the sexual abuse cases, he lost his temper at the Italian Episcopal Confetence and referred to the Italian clergy as being just a bunch of f………s (KZbin would not permit me to use the swear word which the Pope used).:Popes are not supposed to swear. However, the corruption and sexual immorality amongst the Clergy in the Church is enough to “make a Parson swear”. Of course, as Primate of All Italy the Pope sets the admissions policy for the Italian seminaries, so he was swearing at himself.

@@Mark3ABE Well let me also say that no laity or even individual Bishop can charge the Pope with Formal Heresy. None of us or even a Bishop has the Divine Authority to do so. Only the College of Cardinals can call a Consistory to charge the Pope with Formal Heresy and if found as such, as Him to recant and it not, He is defined Formally a Heretic. And excellent article on this subject was pinned by Fr. Brian Harrison at OnePeterFive. Personally I think Pope Francis Singapore speech was in error and causes confusion and I don't think he rejects Christ as the only Savior by which humanity is saved. But the speech was wrong here and I wish He would just clarify it the same way He did when He said God Wills a Diversity of Religions. That is erroneous, He correctly stated God in His Permissive Will allows for a Diversity of Religions, not positively Wills it. That is consistent with God Wills All men to be saved (1 Tim 2:4) yet since all are not saved, God in His permissive will allows for Mans free will to reject God's offer of Grace.

This talk is fully in accordance with Catholic tradition. Saint Ignatius of Loyola tells us to always try to interpret a person's words in the most charitable way possible, and that if we are unable to, we ought to ask the speaker what he understands by them, but many people automatically interpret Pope Francis' words in the most problematical way possible, and don't bother to check their context or how he understands them. Where did this anti-Pope movement begin? I do not want to send more traffic his way, but he is “Catholic” Dr.Joe Doe, with a huge following now, but ten years ago when I started watching him and his “Catholic”lawyer friend, they sounded like two frat guys, ridiculing people in the church. Something inside did not sit right about them, …because although they were a Catholic channel, they never mentioned Jesus Christ/God/Mary etc etc…. Upon research, I found Dr. Joe Doe, on The Journey Home…as it turned out he is a former Anglican priest, (Anglicans are anti-Pope), but on that show, and this is ON VIDEO, I am not making it up, he stated, that… at the Novus Ordo Mass there was an old man in the corner playing a guitar….and that “Anglicans love beauty and architecture”, … ….basically the exteriors nothing mentioned about love for Jesus Christ. The host explains how focusing on the exteriors is not the way to go, but Dr Joe Doe wouldn’t have it. Apparently connected with a group of other KZbinrs who also thought like him. This too is ON VIDEO, “They said we could not bring the Latin Mass back and look at us now” Back then Dr JoeDoe, struggled for years, with a VERY SMALL following on KZbin, …however…. …and this is also ON VIDEO, he told his viewers, that he was going to teach them a “few words in Latin, so that next time they were with friends they could show off a little.” ….But once he connected with Vigano and friends, …and he GREW A HUGE following, attacking the Pope, he took that statement and turned it into, “you SHOULD be saying grace in Latin, ….you SHOULD be praying the Our Father…the Rosary in Latin… …The Novus Ordo Mass needs to go, Mass SHOULD only be in Latin, …Satin hates Latin,” etc etc. “Catholics” fell for this nonsense …and that group became pretty powerful…they have private Facebook groups, etc etc… …..And Nobody told Dr. Joe Doe, that the Catholic Church is Universal and that the English language is the current universal language, followed closely by Spanish”, so Dr. Joe Doe wrote a book, conveniently in English, not in Latin, $$$$, who would buy it if it was in Latin? ….but viewers in his comments section began expressing their support and demanding for his book in Spanish. So this was his second discovery, not only attacking the Pope had brought him a huge following, $$$$$, but they needed to to extend this movement internationally to Mexico, he began asking for translators in his community tabs to sell his book in Spanish, more $$$$$$, …..and before we knew it all these Spanish speaking anti-Pope channels popped up, all using his same rhetoric. He is a huge supporter of Strickland, he has defended him publicly, no surprise, ……but Strickland is ON VIDEO, publicly reading a letter that was sent privately to him, in which the Pope is practically called the anti-Christ. …after his removal, Strickland is ON VIDEO, saying to an interviewer, that he was given a list of things from Rome that he needed to work on. …. ….and then…. Strickland is ON VIDEO, saying in another interview that he was given absolutely no reason as to why he was being removed as Bishop…. Everything is public information, but Catholics simply choose not to do their research…I took a long break from social media because I felt alone, I could not believe how these people were getting away with making false accusations against the Pope and nobody was defending him or the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist…in the regular Mass.

Dear Fr Doyle, Thank you for your reflection on our Holy Father. I agree that we must always acknowledge and respect his office-and always be aware of who is listening to our “assessment” of his decisions and his teaching. I would like to add a bit to your analysis. The Holy Father always has a very complex audience when saying anything. He must always be aware that his audience is an entire world that looks to him to be the chief promoter, defender, and teacher of the Faith. Most people are not going to take the time to research the context of what he says. Unfortunate as it is, his audience, (which in this case includes those young people along with everyone else in the world), are only going to refer to those soundbites to know what the church teaches about the salvific efficacy of other religions. To put it simply, most people are busy going about their lives and frankly are not as nuanced as you are. I would say the pope has a great and grave responsibility to respect the capacity and reality of his entire audience, not just the direct few souls he may be addressing as if he were an anonymous man sitting in his parlor. I am certain that if our late Holy Father Benedict had had this same encounter, you would have spoken on your original topic for this video. All my best to you, Father Doyle, in Jesus through Mary.

I try to pull out common ground when ministering to others of all sorts of denominations and religions and there's plenty of common ground to be found...even if its the love of a cool drink of water. To the lady who said "she only uses the Bible", I would respond with a big nod and a smile and say "Oh yes, a wonderful Catholic Book, the Inspired Word of God, brought to us by various ecumenical councils, synods, and popes of the Catholic Church. Not to be snarky but just to educate her.

BREAKING: "Vatican updates translation of Pope to make sure it excludes traditional Catholicism from religions that lead to God. 'We didn't want anyone getting confused thinking they can go off and be a traditionalist Catholic.' Said a spokesman from the Vatican. 'When the Pope said that all religions are paths to God, he didn't mean those nasty old rigid rad-trads.' The Vatican hopes that this new translation will help to make it clear that you're still a bad person if you try to obey the historic teachings of the Catholic Church." -Reuters 😂😂😂

Thank you for taking the time to comment. During Mass this morning, I had a sudden and unexpected thought which I believe was from God, namely that the vast majority of those who are attacking my video have not even watched it. If so, it speaks volumes. Meanwhile why did Jesus say, "When a Levite came to that spot and saw him, he passed by on the other side. I suggest that you ask the Holy Spirit for guidance, and then watch my video again.

Good grief St. Patrick must be turning in his grave ???? Why cannot Bergolio speak clearly????? Nothing to do with respect…….

"I am the Way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". Dear Father I think that these ecumenical meetings are dangerous. The role of Peter is not to acknowledge other belief systems but to be a witness of the Resurrection to the world. All else is folly.

JOHN 14:6. There is NO PATH to GOD except through JESUS. JESUS appointed St Peter over HIS Church. This modern Pope only gets his authority from CHRIST. If the Pope said that other religions can get right with GOD, he misspoke. And mistaken. I don’t like this Pope. He excommunicated my Beloved Bishop. Bishop Strickland. Does that mean that this Holy Man can not receive the Sacrament? All the Sacraments? This is wrong. Bless You, Father!

@@GodsCottage You certainly are correct. There are good and caring people in all religions, races and countries. Even countries at war with each other. But is seems it would also apply to devout Catholics who prefer the Latin Mass and Traditional Catholic teachings. Instead of using a conservative, active anti abortion Bishop as a counterbalance because the Pope wants to correct the Liberal German Bishops in line with being authentic Catholics.

I spoke to my parish priest about the Holy Father's comments. He advised me that what he said is half truth. He said that all religions lead to justice and judgement. Everyone has an opinion on this, and the ultimate judgement rests with God and God alone.
