Mine came in today. I’m watching it now. You’re right it’s a very subtle upgrade. It’s probably the best it will ever look. I hope the 4k treatments of the other Godzilla films will show up in the US in the next couple of years haha

Thanks for a great review, already have the blu-ray edition and the collectors book so won't upgrading to this!

Everything the video said is pretty much right on. Any problems people have with the 4K master including the fact that it is an SDR only transfer can be sourced back to Toho's 4K master they produced. They have released several of the Showa Godzilla (and Biollante) movies on 4K Blu-ray in Japan and all of them feature 10-bit SDR transfers. This new Criterion disc is no different and literally just ports that 4K master here the states (the included booklet in this set confirms this). The only Toho 4K Godzilla discs that have HDR to my knowledge are Shin Godzilla and now Minus One. Overall, it is a slightly better experience than the old Criterion disc because it is a bit cleaner and sharper, but there is clearly some cleaning/tampering at play even if it is mild. The only thing I would like to add is that only the audio commentary track is ported over to the 4K and everything else is on the Blu-ray only (including Godzilla: King of the Monsters U.S. cut). The only thing different about this 4K set is the inclusion of a 4K SDR transfer. Everything else from the audio, to the packaging, to the supplements is pretty much identical to the previous release. One last note, I suspect that the 4K disc is a BD-100 because I noticed three video layers on the bottom. I don't have the equipment to completely verify this, but this was just my observation upon looking at the underside of the 4K disc.🙂

Hi Adam, Can You make review/comparison for Three Colors and The Apu Trilogy from the Criterion? Could you please include more reviews of Criterion and art films? I really appreciate your 4K movie reviews! Thanks

Recently bought the blu-ray before this release, and was contemplating the 4K, but your review is just what I wanted to know -- is it worth it? Sticking with the blu-ray! 😊

Kind of strange that they put this on a BD-66 disc. Maybe the picture quality would have been better if they put it on a 100

I'm curious how many B&W films are on BD-100 discs. I would guess that a majority of both the worst and the best of them don't bother, under the assumption that they'll be able to make sufficiently efficient use of compression codecs to render less data relative to color. The decision likely depends a lot on the nature and condition of the source print they were able to get their hands on.
@jonathannoble94652 ай бұрын
@ good points. I looked it up and there are a pretty substantial number of B/W films on BD-100s. I guess runtime is a big deciding factor. Still I’d rather have it maxed out if I’m paying a premium price

I don't have the equipment to formally check, but when I looked on the bottom side of the 4K disc, I saw three video layers. This makes me think that this is indeed a BD-100 disc. If anyone can verify this for sure, I would appreciate it.

I've already bought this twice from Criterion, once as the standalone, and again as part of the Showa Era Collection. Doesn't seem like the upgrades are worth it (for me) to go to the well a third time.

Good thing I’ve canceled my preorder. Maybe Arrow Video or another line would give us a proper 4K transfer to this movie. As I own the Bluray Criterion awesome box set that includes all Godzilla films from that era there’s no point of double dipping this edition. Thanks for your review as always!

@@williamdriver1959 actually I think Arrow could. If you see the difference between the Arrow’s 4K release of “Silence of the Lambs” and the Blu-ray “4K” transfer from Criterion’s you could see clearly the difference. And as this review shows there’s no Dolby Vision or even a HDR10 upgrade in this 4K Godzilla version. The Blu-ray already on the previous Godzilla Blu-ray set it’s good enough for me until a new really “great” 4K transfer arrives. It’s my personal opinion of course.
@williamdriver19592 ай бұрын
@ comparing a old criterion blu ray to a new 4k don’t make sense. Arrows transfer was better than the kino lorber one. I’ll agree that criterion should have used hdr and im not sure why they don’t on a lot of there black and white 4ks. I don’t buy a lot of criterion but they do good work far as transfers. I do prefer arrow over all but in this case it’s an old movie you can’t do but so much.
@bulloguin2 ай бұрын
@@williamdriver1959 Mmmh OK. Maybe it was far fetched to compare a Blu-ray quality to a 4K one. And I understand your point, it’s an old movie for sure, but I think Criterion could’ve done a better job that’s all.
