Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to Godzilla Minus One (2023).
Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese epic/kaiju film written, directed, and with visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki. It is also produced by Toho Studios and ever since we saw what they did with Shin Godzilla we've been more than excited to see what else they could come up with.
In this film, Japan has barely recovered from the Second World War when a gigantic peril emerges off the coast of Tokyo. Koichi, a deserter traumatized by his first confrontation with Godzilla, sees this as an opportunity to redeem his conduct during the war.
The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki. Set in postwar Japan, it follows a former kamikaze pilot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder after encountering a giant monster known as "Godzilla".
Godzilla Minus One gave us everything we ever wanted from a Godzilla film packed into one. The human element is phenomenal, the themes of redemption and fighting to live instead of to die are incredibly layered and are apparent throughout the entirety of the film. Godzilla the main star itself is probably the scariest, most destructive, meanest iteration we've seen yet. I mean c'mon...Have you seen that atomic breath sequence!?

Curious is their a domestic release of this available I heard because of a deal they made JP Godzilla films won't release for viewing the same year as the legendary produced stuff so Godzilla x Kong I thought had made that a no go but I'm seeing multiple reactions to it now I'm fine seeing it by alternative means first but I will definitely support it on official release as well wish I'd seen it in black and white

Tachibana was a mechanic for the Kamikaze Suicide Squad. He had been maintaining the flying coffins of his friends who took off and never returned. Although it is not depicted in the movie, I think he must have been very sad. Shikishima was also a member of the suicide squad, but he did not take off. Shikishima tried to detonate himself with Godzilla as atonement for the war, but Tachibana gave him a way to live. Tachibana was finally able to make arrangements for his friends to survive.

Some contextual info that you might appreciate: <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="243">4:03</a> - This is one of my favourite bits of foreshadowing in the film. All of the fish have their organs ballooning out through their mouths which occurs as a result of them undergoing rapid depressurization from surfacing because they're escaping Godzilla (and later potentially dying to radiation) coming up from the deep. This is the exact same principle that eventually gets used in their final attack and is likely the inspiration for how he came up with the plan since it affected other life that lived in the deep with Godzilla. Another mention is at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="390">6:30</a> the reason Godzilla is tossing them is because Toho explicitly has a rule that Godzilla doesn't eat people, so that's why the attack taking place at a smaller scale explicitly makes sure to show him attacking rather than predating on the humans. <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="1863">31:03</a> - The heat from the blast turning everything to ash and then also causing rapid condensation of water vapor to create cumulonimbus clouds that gets seeded with the ash falls back down as black rain. In the atomic bombings, this also brought down fallout and meant that the survivors of the blast & heat were being drenched in radiation that would kill them several years later. There's a film titled *_Black Rain_* (released in 1989 but NOT the one of the same name in the same year by Ridley Scott) that is en excellent look at post-war Japan in this same time setting that's a really excellent watch if you're ever curious more about the time & tone of the setting here, especially with regards to the immediately post-war era survivor's guilt & PTSD that was experienced on a national level as well as on individual ones at that time. <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="2267">37:47</a> - The Shinden was an incomplete fighter that never saw action, and one was taken by the Americans during the occupation and the other was dismantled. The one that was built for this film was also made to be incredibly accurate as it was anonymously set up as a museum piece before it was revealed to have been used in the film. As such there's a LOT of thematic association with the plane as part of an unrealized dream of a chance to save Japan from disaster that never came. Additionally, at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="2921">48:41</a> the fishing ships all coming to assist is also exceptionally poignant given that the Lucky Dragon 5 incident that inspired the original *_Godzilla_* in 1954 was because of the crew of a fishing boat dying to radiation contributing to overcoming that threat. <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="3076">51:16</a> - The salute is because Godzilla is portrayed like a cursed spirit (tatarigami) where the hatred, pain, & rage is more of a reflection of what they're all experiencing that is inherited through contact rather than in a simple antagonistic way. This is why Godzilla is attacking Japan rather than being focused on the Americans who dropped the bomb, and it's a core part of both thematically why Japanese stories like this have a very specific way of focusing on the survivor's struggle with PTSD but especially in the emotional reflection of the creature (even *_Shin Godzilla_* had this in the lyrics to "Who Will Know" which played during the Tokyo attack). This also carries through into the ending where, like in *_Princess Mononoke,_* the curse of a Tatarigami isn't something that is easily broken even when it can be defeated and is a mark that grows on all it touches, spreading that pain even as it keeps them alive. She survived the physical and radiation damage from the attack on Ginza for the same reason that Godzilla is regenerating, while the earlier scene of the attack also implies that the black rain meant that he's invisibly being killed by radiation poisoning that won't be visible for a number of years despite everything he's done to constantly fight to survive. It's intended to be an ending that's deeply conflicting as neither fully tragic nor happy, but just a different turn of that core underlying struggle of what loss & survival look like that's why the film is called "Minus One" because it's all about thinking you've gone through the worst only to find out that it's possible to go through even more hardship and still keep going. Ever since the director's film *_Returner_* (which is a very Japanese scifi action flick that's a fun time), I've really loved how well he tells a human story within the framework of a fantastical setting, and Godzilla Minus One is fan and away his best, as well as easily being my favourite Godzilla film (and I've been watching them since I was 2). Your reactions and observations about the elements of film are always a delight, so hopefully this does a bit in giving some back to ya on this.

Unknowingly having been a fan of his work for so long made me even happier to later see him at all the big events when the film was such a huge success. It's exciting to run into somebody else who also loved *_Returner_* and ta give you a reason to go rewatch it again. It's SUCH a blast!

This movie was by far my favourite movie of 2023. If I remember correctly, 'Minus One' in the title is in reference to Japan having to start again from zero after WW2 but with the emergence of Gojira, it pushes it further to -1.

What’s on Noriko’s neck was Godzilla cell(G cell). after Godzilla did atomic breath at Ginza radio news anchor said They found Godzilla cells everywhere in Ginza that came from Godzilla. so When Noriko got shock wave She infected G cell That made Noriko recovered. Nobody can survive in that terrible shock wave normally. G cells give you regenerate ability but also G cells can change you to Kaiju and When Godzilla die that infected person dies also, but not sure those two for this time. That German ejector seat call was epic - I've seen this four times in the theater, had no idea. Regarding that thing on her neck at the end, the director has implied that she was imbued with Godzilla DNA which helped her survive the blast. And yes, it did move. The black and white version, a nod to the '54 film, is amazing as well.

A beautiful movie. A film not exactly about Godzilla, but about post-war Japan, community, and the scars that the imperialist war left on the people, with Godzilla as a figment of karma to heal. Such an incredible movie. The ONLY Godzilla movie that managed to make me actually care about the human characters which made the threat from Godzilla so much more real and so much more tension-filled. Genuinely a modern masterpiece. I also love that it was citizens beating Godzilla. Not an army or the government. Just people trying to defend their country (even though a lot of them did spend time in the army)

The fact you can see this Godzilla actively looking at the people he's attacking makes his rampage much more personal than others. These aren't just people getting in his way of smashing buildings, the buildings are in his way of crushing people.

The fact that this film had a $10-$12 million dollar budget and the way this film was made so beautifully and very well crafted with the VFX is completely mind-blowing. Godzilla Minus One truly deserved that Oscar, and now he's Godzilla, finally an Oscar winner along with his arch nemesis King Kong.

I watched this earlier at like 330am cause I couldn't sleep, I'm still up at 12 noon baffled. I haven't had more fun with a movie in decades. Was legit watching it as if it was a Hollywood film, in the background, as entertainment. Didn't expect to actualy react vocally when certain scenes went down, even in the first 20 minutes I was hollering. Wow. Wow. Wow.

They made sure that Godzilla's roar was consistent of the 1954 Godzilla's roar. The entire movie was just absolutely phenomenal how they made you so invested in the human characters to show you that after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki they pretty much had nothing but when Godzilla came into the picture..... they had less than nothing And the best part of it is the score for the entire movie , especially using the original Godzilla Theme🤩🤩 I am so glad this movie got an Oscar, even if it's only for visual effects

Godzilla vs. Biollante established Godzilla's cells as a plot point, introducing the idea that they're highly sought after by organizations and governments for genetic engineering... It's also mentioned that Godzilla's mutant DNA is why he's invulnerable to conventional weapons, his cells rapidly self-heal (like Wolverine).

Man the amount of hours, love, sweat and tears that went into the VFX...you can just tell. The amount of love and passion the team had for this project. Godzilla looked incredible. The lighting, the textures...everything about it looked phenomenal. The final mic drop was that atomic breath sequence!

Firstly, I'm glad that yall took the time to experience this movie, it was so amazing. A movie that slipped under the radar of so many people because it was a "Godzilla film" and probably because there are people that hate reading subtitles, which is ashame. However, watching it on a computer screen is such a disservice to this film. I watched this in a Dolby Atmos theater and my goodness, the score and sound heightens the already impressive visuals, exponentially. To truly experience this film is to see it on the big screen with a phenomenal sound system. Everyone talks about the visuals, story, and acting, but the score and sound is something this film doesn't get enough credit for. It was such an amazing experience, I saw this movie 4 times in theaters! Something I've never done with any movie. Can't wait to buy and own this amazing film!

I don't know how much it slipped under the radar for people because it was a Godzilla film. The buzz was real for this film. It wasn't going to do Monsterverse numbers but the word did get out about G-1 and It made over 115M globally off of a 10M production budget and it won an Oscar for VFX . Plus it returned to theaters for one week remastered in black white retitled Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color so the film was very successful as people did catch it in theaters.

This was the movie that made me remember how much i liked having actual scores in movies. the sound design, the art and lighting, everything was just so right. It's the first movie I saw 4 times in theaters in a long, long time, and was trying to get other people to go see it with me each time after the first because I really wanted other people to see it.

Fun fact: Ginza scene in which Noriko met Koichi was based on his true story. According to Takashi Yamazaki, he found out for his wife in Shibuya, and happened to spot her like Koichi after Great East Japan Earthquake happened ! This is how you make a Godzilla film, the human element is handled so well and capturing the dark tones of war, survivors guilt/ptsd. But capturing the beautiful themes like yall said of redemption, forgiveness, and working together to build a better future. This isnt a godzilla film but a war drama with godzilla. I wish for all the success and if they make a sequel hopefully itll capture the essence but its fine as a standalone. But also one of the best atomic breathe scenes ever!

This movie was under the budget of 15 million! The Flash which had really bad cgi used about 150 million! In under 15 million we got this masterpiece plus it won the oscar for best visual effects. I love it

The 15 million budget isn't a good thing. Japanese film industry is infamous for underpaying and work crunching their vfx artist to an even greater extent than Hollywood due to a lack on industry wide unions. Even Yamazaki refuses to put out a hard number because more studios will want him to make more movies on that budget. He also wants to work in Hollywood himself, saying he wants to make a Star Wars film. He isn't some anti-hollywood rebel people think he is.

I watched this at the cinema (in England), and there weren't loads of ppl seated, maybe a double-dozen, and at the end of the showing, people were communicating so much shock at how impressed they were at this (based on previous Godzilla films they had watched). It felt like a collective awe at the beauty of the music, visuals, and absolute heart bursting at the centre of this (imo) masterpiece.

This film can be said to be a remake that follows the theme of the original 1954 Godzilla movie. it's a drama about the battle between Godzilla, who has become the embodiment of nuclear power, and humans desperately trying to survive after the defeat of the nuclear bomb. The film recounts the actual hydrogen bomb test conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. In fact, Godzilla was created by director Eiji Tsuburaya as a result of an incident involving an ocean-going tuna fishing boat that was exposed to radiation during the test. Now, Yamazaki has produced G Minus One, a return to Godzilla's origins, with the hopes that Tsuburaya had placed in Godzilla. I was born in 1964 (not that that really has anything to do with anything), and I grew up with all the Godzilla movies and loved them all. the scariest one I ever saw at the theater was Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (a.k.a. Hedora). In the mid 1980's I served in the Navy and visited Japan a few times, and of course, knowing the history between the U.S. and Japan since WWII. and considering the relationship America has had with Japan since then, I was always struck with the Godzilla movies; how Japan used Godzilla as a metaphor for Atomic/Nuclear weapons at the beginning, and how Godzilla eventually became an ally with Man as he fought against other Kaiju (especially Hedora; as a metaphor for pollution) in later movies. and since the first ever Godzilla movie, Americans not only love the movie(s), but also cheer for Japan's victory against any kaiju that attacks them. Only those geniuses at ToHo could think of the idea of using such a destructive force as atomic weapons, and turn it into a "monster" for them to deal with! And something else: this Godzilla's atomic breath was such an unexpected surprise! not just his breath melting whatever he uses it against, but CAUSING an atomic explosion with it himself! Fantastically done!👏👏👏👏👏

I was waiting for this moment finally for you guys to finally watch this movie...I had watch it in IMAX on the limited run it had in the US and the theatre was absolutely shaking...by the end of the movie...everyone was crying at the end when Nori was alive. The greatest Godzilla film of all time. So far that is... I've been a fan since I was a kid in the 1970's watching Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster (yeah I know it's really Hedorah...) on TV. Then it was the other films on TV and some of the Showa films in the theater back then, the Hanna Barbera cartoon, the Shogun Warrior Godzilla (which I still have), the Marvel Godzilla comics of the late 1970s... and now the later and modern films, toys, collectibles, etc. I'm 56 years old and this was the first Godzilla film that really, really, REALLY made me cry... As I have said, we are now in a post Godzilla Minus One world. I wish I had seen GxK before this. No matter how much to try to reset your expectations and tell yourself it is a different type of movie, a different type of Godzilla. They are completely different stories etc, no matter how low I tried to set my expectations and knew what I was going to GxK for, and don't get me wrong - I did enjoy what I got from GxK - I still felt a little empty walking out of it compared to walking out of Godzilla Minus One. This is the absolutely terrifying, destructive force of nature Godzilla should be - even when nominally on our side, and the standard to which all other Godzilla movies will be judged. You missed out, not seeing this on the big screen. I was of the mind that they could have easily taken out all the Godzilla content in this movie and focused on the disgraced soldier and it still would have been a great movie. Likewise with the Godzilla stuff, by itself, it would have been awesome. But then they put it all together and made a kickass movie. I think this movie should have been up for best picture, director, screenplay, actor, actress, and just about every major Oscar award you can think of. This variant of Godzilla is total a-hole. It may not be among the strongest variant of Godzilla but he sure is terrible and destructive. Literally woke up and chose destruction. Koichi's feeling of helplessness, despair and extreme hatred towards Godzilla has the same intensity of emotion showed by Haruo Sakaki in Netflix animated Godzilla(Planet of the Monster). The thing you saw on her neck is G-CELL. :)

The dinner table scene is, hands-down, one of the best in the film. "We're not married and that's not my kid" and all his friends looking at him like "no dude you're married and that's your kid, you just don't know yet" is the best. I also love the end of the anti-Godzilla plan, where all the CIVILIANS show up and save the day, and only by literally discarding the last remnant of the physical manifestation of the fatalism inherent to Japanese culture do they finally succeed in defeating their monster.

Seeing this movie was so emotional for me because I lost my father last year and he was a big Godzilla fan as just as I am. I still recall the night he introduce me to Godzilla - King Of the Monsters (1956). You would be proud Dad that Godzilla is still kicking ass and taking names and bringing it to new fans of the Kaiju film genre. Not only did this film won VFX at the Oscars. But this film corrected so many mistakes that previous Godzilla films made. In my mind - if you are looking for a pure definition of a Godzilla film minus the cheese, and the other monsters then this film would be the correct response (And of course the correct response would be 1954 original obviously lol)

Watched it with my brother, it had us in tears when Koichi read the telegram and Sumiko just slapping his jacket it's like telling How dare you leave Akiko alone, She is alive Noriko is alive, but in softer and empathizing way. That's when everything breaks down to us. The actors who portrayed Koichi and Tachibana really give their emotions not just acting for this movie you can feel both their pains and frustration and also the guilt that was lifted from the both of them. This is by far the best Godzilla we've watched. You should also watch Rurouni Kenshin trilogy both actors are in their too!.

I waited with breathless anticipation for over a year for this movie to drop. The whole walk across the lobby of the building toward my theater, I was thinking to myself, "Please, let it be worth all the hype; let it be worth all the hype". When I got back to my vehicle afterward, I sat there for a moment to think about things. Next thing I know, I'm grinning broadly saying out loud "Oh, yeah. That was worth ALL the hype!". I'm a life long Godzilla fan, I even had VHS tapes of old Godzilla films recorded from TV brodcasts back in the day that I watched until they wore out and I've been a defender of every film in the franchise, even the cheesiest of the lot. This is the first one to ever bring me to tears every single time I watch it. It never loses that impact. It has one of the best explorations of trauma, guilt, and the unstoppable will of the human spirit that I've seen in any movie, not just G films but over all. You want to see the monster, but you're so worried about this wonderful cast of characters that they've made you fall in love with that you almost hope he doesn't show up. That alone is such a feat that I never even considered anyone ever achieving it. Gojira 1954 will always be the standard and to compare it to any film in the franchise isn't fair, but this has to be the best Godzilla film ever made next to it.

Godzilla is the embodiment of war. That is why Godzilla comes from the southern sea. The destruction of Tokyo represents the Tokyo Air Raid of March 10, 1945. And the blue ray of light represents the nuclear bomb. Each series has a slightly different meaning for Godzilla, and in the previous Shin Godzilla, it is said to be the embodiment of the grudge spirits of the dead from the war. The last one, in front of the Imperial Palace, is said to be the embodiment of the spirits of the dead, and various lines of dialogue are cited as evidence of this. This time, Godzilla has become a reiteration of the tragedy of war, in light of the world situation. Incidentally, Godzilla will never attack the Imperial Palace.

One of the few times I wish Godzilla would stay dead, that reunion at the end was worth everything, I genuinely feel like the movie would’ve been better if they simply left it at him being dead instead of showing him regenerating, the main characters deserve peace but then again this is Godzilla 😭

It goes hand and hand with the themes of life towards the end of the film if you think about it. Even Godzilla fights to live another day. For better or worse 😂 That sequel is about to be crazy though!

With regards to Noriko's neck at the end, I got the impression that she somehow inherited Godzilla's regenerative abilities and that was some kind of side effect. The likelihood of her surviving such a blast is extremely low, lending the regeneration hypothesis more weight. But I'm not sure if that would work in a sequel-it would take away from the grounded, human element that made this film so powerful.

Maybe have the themes of the sequel tie into government experiments etc. There's likely hundreds of other people who gained similar regenerative abilities, leading to their survival of the blast too - which would prompt the government to start experimenting on the cells. This would tie into the creation of a human made monstrosity for Godzilla to come and fight
