I went last week - it’s easily one of the best movies, period, that I’ve seen. Had a matinee date with my wife yesterday - she’s not much of a monster movie fan - but she absolutely loved it. She pretty much said the same thing I was thinking, Hollywood would’ve NEVER made this movie - a celebration of family and courage. For me it’s an expression of what used to be called “manly virtues” - self-control, bravery, sacrifice, acceptance of responsibility. Not that women are excluded from those virtues, they certainly aren’t in the film, but those used to be the behaviors that were held up to boys as aspirational as they grew into manhood. As Mr. H said, it’s a brilliant film, on all sides.

The thing that is not mentioned in the film was that many Kamikaze pilots were very young, and were given minimal flight training. So the unspoken part of this movie is that Koichi was likely 17-18 years old in the first scene, if even that. So that gives context to a young man with his whole life in front of him who is being asked to die for an already lost cause. The aftermath of his decision leaves a very young man with no support network around him to grapple with a lot of very heavy baggage on his own. I just checked showtimes, and at least here in Southern California, it looks like they've extended it for one more week! Amazing! I've seen it twice, and I might have to go for the hat trick and see it one more time.

I noted with regret how praised this film is. It is ridiculous. It is only saved by the special effects. The separate shots of people-monsters are too frequent, the script is a catastrophe and the interpretation too expressive of these Japanese men who look like some pampered little girls when it should have been a masculine attitude made me waste my time unnecessarily. how stupid can you be to appreciate such a film, I ask.

I just saw it last night and it was amazing! The SFX were a great blend of CGI and practical effects. The characters were excellent too. They weren't the generic stock characters you find in Hollywood movies. There was good character development and I genuinely cared about them and their back stories. As a history buff I feel it also did a great job showing how bleak things were in post-war Japan. I'm really glad I saw it in theaters. Probably the best movie I've seen all year.

ANOTHER praise is that the 'heat ray' breath DAMAGES Godzilla. He's not impervious to the power of his own attack, and there's a gap until his tissues regenerate so he can fire it again. This makes it feel more realistic, because he's a creature who's suddenly gotten this new power, and hasn't yet had time to adapt to it. One may assume that if he regenerated enough, his mutated body would continually evolve greater and greater damage resistance and/or even faster regenerative capability.
@nont18411
@nont18411 8 ай бұрын
And through those damage in his throat, he didn’t only shoot the atomic breath, but also a lot of Godzilla cells throughout the perimeter of the nuke as well. That’s why Noriko got infected by those regenerative cells when she received the blast and survived while becoming the Godzilla-human mutant in a process.
@Alondro77
@Alondro77 8 ай бұрын
@@nont18411 That's just a hypothesis people have decided they believe. There was no evidence at all in the film Noriko has Godzilla cells in her, and it is not implied how she survived. I liked that the commentary is more subtle than what you'd have seen in an American movie, for sure. I like how the movie went into the Japanese side of things post war without being heavy handed to illustrate their side of the story and without, as you said, blaming America for their ills. I really felt for Koichi (protagonist) throughout the whole movie with how his actor (Ryunosuke Kamiki) depicted and conveyed his trauma and suffering, and how it progressed into seething hate directed towards Godzilla. Minami Hamabe was great as Noriko, as well, because she gave a great performance as a young woman coming into her own and becoming a power in her own right--without downplaying Koichi or any of the other men in the movie. I agree, the messaging in this movie is more effective because it's subtle and it's positive, and promoting positive values like friendship, family, and unity. How Japanese can you get? We Americans can definitely learn a thing or two from that approach. Which is not to stan Japan--they've got tons of problems of their own that I'm well aware of. But this movie is brilliant and I want to see it in theaters again before it leaves!

Maybe not the ONLY reason but I think definitely ONE of the reasons this movie is so good is that it is not even really ABOUT THE MONSTER. It is much more about the CHARACTERS and there are COMPELLING STORY ARCS. The main character undergoes a "hero's journey" of sorts as he starts out a cowardly failed pilot and goes through a personal crisis leading to him redeeming himself and becoming a hero by the end of the movie. And there is so much GOOD MORALITY and HUMAN BONDING in the story. It was touching how that other lady was determined to take care of the baby even though she was not the mother (not related at all) and the main character just basically takes care of her and the baby because he is too kind to kick them out. Even that neighbor lady was jaded and said she wanted no part in raising some random baby but her heart softened and she kind of became an honorary aunt. And the comraderie between the main character and the crew on that mine sweeper boat was well developed as was the compelling emotional scenes of the people banding together to defeat Godzilla. It was much more ABOUT THE PEOPLE than it was about the creature. To many giant monster movies are ABOUT THE MONSTER and the human characters are portrayed by 3rd rate generic actors with really generic lines and there is not much of a compelling story for them.

As you said the performances by the actors are very much theatrical. At times, I felt I was attending a play, and it indeed added to the immersion drawing myself and the audience in. A lot of people are off put by the "subtitles" but it's a very simplified translation and the acting is so well done in the fashion described that you will understand exactly what is happening throughout. Again if you don't see this in an IMAX theatre it's equivalent to never having seen Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi in the the theatre. That use of silence comes directly from live theatre and was so well executed. Can't praise this film enough. I only have one question for Mr H. How many times did you have to hold back tears? hahahah Best, mate! Great coverage of this phenomenon of a film.

This was the best film I've seen in many years. It's harrowing, heart-wrenching at times, heartfelt. And if you take out Godzilla, it's the best war and war-torn drama in possibly decades. But then it also has this incredible Godzilla experience. It was hard not to cry at more than a few moments. I said it to the people I watched this with, but this is Japan's 'Saving Private Ryan.' It's that good and that resonate for them about WWII and war, in general, reverence of the veterans, the sanctity of life, and all of that. I'd never, ever think that would come from a Godzilla movie, but here we are! The fact it's put Hollywood to utter, utter shame is also amazing.

Godzilla's at his best when his presence evokes a sense of awe, when the audience feels that he is an ancient, inscrutable god risen from the depths. I don't like goofy, campy Godzilla. Another great detail about his atomic breath is that like you said his dorsal plates pop out when it's charging before locking back in for the release. It's reminiscent of an actual nuclear reactor, the control rods pop out in the lead up to the reaction. This is a wonderful detail the director no doubt purposely included and a great reminder of how Godzilla really is a walking nuclear reactor

This, bar none, is in my top 3 favorite Godzilla films of all time. And everything in this review is spot on: -The visuals alone disproves that you need a $100 million+ to have good vfx. The story and the messaging involved, especially with what it takes to be a man in tough times, I adored and can really relate to. You don't hear that coming out of Hollywood, other than "MEN BAD, WOMEN SUPERIOR" and it's disgusting (and those a$$holes wonder how, as they put it, incels are made). -The characters were all likeable and relatable, where you wanted them all to live, and they REALLY kept us engaged throughout the entire movie. Adding Godzilla to the movie was simply icing on the cake because they didn't need to put him in. I'd like to see WW2 movie, like this, come out of it. -The musical score and sound were awesome. Got the soundtrack on my iTunes (Divine being one of my favorites), and the fact that they went back to the G Man's original 1954 roar, which is the most horrifying roar to this day, made me so happy. -And let's not forget Big G himself. Someone on another channel said it best: it was as if Jason Vorhees transformed into Godzilla. The best interpretation of the G Man in years, and he is horrifying in this movie. Totally and utterly destructive and brutal. We've NEVER a Godzilla this terrifying in years. And his atomic breath, my God, NO OTHER INCARNATION can match it. To be honest, I don't know if I want him fighting another monster, if they do a sequel. He makes such a good antagonist, and with good human characters and convincing real life situations and solutions, it's hard to say if adding another monster in a sequel would even do it justice or cheapen it. So I'm not entirely convinced that they should add a classic monster. The force of nature that Big G was in this event, I mean WOW, the execution of adding another monster to the movie has to be on point. Almost literally NO mistakes. More Godzilla is good enough, at this point. Made with a budget of LESS than $15 million is insane, but yet the results are absolutely incredible. Hollywood and the rest of the movie maker elites are coping right now. GM1 isn't getting a Golden Globe nod, and they're doing everything they can from keeping it from even getting an Oscar of ANY kind. The fact there are already complaints coming from them is proof enough. Let's keep giving movies, like this, the praise and credit that it so rightfully deserves. HAIL TO THE KING, BABY!

I loved it. For my money, it was the best Godzilla movie in recent years. No diversity, no LGTBI representation, no Mary Sues, no woke message - and yet it was a near perfect movie. Interestingly, Miyazaki's The Boy And The Heron deals with some similar themes - a young man who has his family and mental health shattered by the war and has a family reassembled by circumstances and necessity. Godzilla -1.0 is a human story and a very moving one. Superficially, the Hero's Journey, but also the start of the journey of Japan out of the war and the destruction it caused. I am going to see Godzilla -1.0 again soon. It's a nearly perfect film.

Agree 100%. Very powerful film. I was pleasantly surprised at the direction the anti war theme went. Focusing on the people. That is usually a buzzkill in a Godzilla movie. This made you care for the people, so when they were in danger, you were actually concerned for them. Visually stunning. The only stand out negative visual, for me, was the row of tanks in the city. Very brief scene, but can be seen in trailer. Visuals are leaps and bounds above the Legendary movies. Actually believed a full sized Godzilla was being drug behind a boat. A solid 10 out of 10. Toho still have it. Yamazaki is a wizard.

I saw it fully aware of spoilers and i still teared up two times. Everyone needs to see this in theaters for the experience and to send a message to Hollywood. We have to care about the characters if we are going to appreciate a movie.

I think the main character was torn between what he was supposed to do as a kamikaze pilot and what he actually did. But the reason he actually decided not to kill himself as a kamikaze pilot was because the last thing his father said to him was to come home alive... It wasn't because he was a coward. So he put his father's wishes over what the country told him to do. Amazing movie all around.

It hit me the other day that Oppenheimer, still being very fresh on everyone’s mind, was the perfect prelude to Minus One and almost feels like a part two to a 2-part story about the horrors of nuclear weapons / war. I agree though, Minus One is the best film of the year hands down, an incredible soul-shattering film

What a contrast with the way the Monarch series is going. Minus One has characters you can empathize with. Human life is actually valued. The horrors of war on the common man is stressed. Clearly stands at the top of my favorite Godzilla films.

Saw this last week for the first time. I LOVE IT! I didn't care for Shin Godzilla, and I do love the Legendary Godzilla movies, but this one was special. I never felt truly terrified of Godzilla and thought he was cool when he destroyed buildings and monsters in the old movies. But this movie, I felt scared seeing him. He terrified me and I loved it. I even cared a lot for the human characters in this movie (I don't mind and even like the humans in past movies too... except Shin), but I really felt connected to them in this movie and shed a tear at the ending when that one character. Really spectacular movie and buying this on DVD when it comes out. Also, going to watch it again next week. Fantastic Godzilla movie.

Seeing it Friday. It's a crying shame that there are very few screenings. It's only on in my Vue in Harrow for three days, at one specific time. I was on the fence at first because cinema as a whole this year has left me feeling a bit unsure but after the positive reviews I figure I can't not.

I saw it a few days ago. It was amazing - it was much more of a historic drama that happens to have a giant monster in it. The film actually reminded me of Akira kurosawa's 1946 film "No Regrets for Our Youth". Curacella is known mostly for his period, Samurai films. However, this film was released in 1946 and was critical of the Japanese government and its militarists from World War II. It is most notable because it is released just one year after the Japanese people were called to give everything -- EVERYTHING for the Japanese emperor. Godzilla -1 and "No Regrets" are very different films of course, however I think both offer some level of introspection and reflection on the terrors of World War II.

Right up up there with 1954 Gojira for me!

I took my 9yr old son to see it. I can't get him to read a book, but he loved the movie so much he was fine with the subtitles. He was so into it he cheered, he got upset when the good guys were in danger. Modern woke Hollywood has stolen these father/son movies from a generation of dads.

Have to agree 100% with that review. I nearly cried a couple of times too, and that’s incredibly rare for me. Well thought-out story, beautifully performed, crafted and directed. And done for comparative peanuts. Hope Hollywood is taking notes, instead of churning out yet another $200m+ catastrophe that probably didn’t have a finished script when filming/VFX work started! 🤣

Saw it yesterday and it was even better than I expected, based on all the positive reviews. The subtitles, BTW, did not bother me at all. That monster was a….well…*monster*! Oy vey and aye carumba! But the story is character-driven, which is always the best story. Totally unexpected twist at the end. Marvelous film.

I am hoping this movie is released on Blu Ray/DVD with audio description and English language dubbing. Why? because I'm blind and I still want to experience something of this deeply human movie. P.S. They should grab a bunch of Hollywood directors and producers and make them sit down and watch this movie in order to show them how its done, and done at a tiny fraction of the ridiculous budgets of Hollywood.

I agree with all of this. I didn't know the actors, cannot speak their language, and would not recognize them; however, I believed them and was invested from the Toho logo until the final credits. Regarding the "over-acting", my friend, who went with me, agreed with that sentiment. Many online have the same critique. I tried to put myself in Koiche's place: what he has seen, what he has endured. Most of us have not seen the horrors of war or nuclear fallout. Now, introduce a monster onto that trauma - it's terror to the power of ten. Two scenes that it reminded me of were Marilyn Burns in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, when she is tied to the chair, and John Savage in The Deer Hunter, when they are prisoners of the Vietcong. Both actors just release guttural screams of terror, eyes go wide and wild, and they completely lose it. All three are totally believable.

Awesome movie. Loved how they incorporated the first two lines of Blue Oyster Cult song as he attacks the city. I’m going to watch it at least one more time. The ship scenes were done great. The women in the movie were also heroic imo. What an ending as well. If there was something that would have made the movie better I can’t think of what it would be. All the main characters were well fleshed out, there was always something going on to hold my interest, whether action or building the story, or making the audience care about the characters.
