5:10 Also, the last line of the film in the Japanese version is Ichiro appologizing to the painter saying “Sorry Mr. Painter” whereas in the English dub the last line of the film is the bullies telling Ichiro “Hey Ichiro you were great.”

A few misc things: - When Ichiro's neighbor calls the police, his dialogue is very clear, but in the dub, it was masked with car noises - One of the thieves is given the name "Roy" in the english dub, but there's no mention of their named in the original japanese dub - Hilariously, Ichiro's neighbor refers to Minya as a god in the original japanese dub - Was it confirmed that Ichiro says "Esbrasaurus"? I thought he was saying "There's Gorosaurus/Brosaurus" but the audio was just recorded weirdly
@PaperFinz Жыл бұрын
Thanks for those bits of information. As for the Esbrasaurus name, I saw it in the "The Big Book of Japanese Giant Monster Movies: The Lost Cuts: Editing Japanese Monsters," where it mentions Gorosaurus name as Esbrasaurus.
@mikehunt4986 Жыл бұрын
@@PaperFinz You should've actually watched the movie instead of relying on that book. Ichiro sounds like he says, "There's Brasaurus," followed by, "There's Manda." It's possible that whoever wrote that book misheard "There's Brasaurus" as "Esbrasaurus."

Despite this film’s many shortcomings, I still really enjoy it for its social commentary on what life was like in that time period for a child. It took me a few rewatches to realize how depressing the film’s undertone is.

Director Inoshiro Honda was a loner and was bullied when he was a kid. He got into Filmmaking as an Outlet for his Creativity. I think Godzilla's Revenge was actually a Movie about his Own Childhood. The Character in the Movie was even called Shiro.

It gets deeper: Notice how Ichiro and some of the kids wore a yellow cap? That was a high-visibility cap many kids wore at that time in Japan, so that motorists would spot kids walking across busy streets. Like Ichiro and the other kids, in 1960s Japan, it became fairly common for kids to accompany themselves home from school, since many working-class families required both the father and mother working to earn a decent income. The yellow cap was implemented after there had been THOUSANDS of reported accidents of kids getting struck by motorists; the bright color of the cap was meant to draw greater attention to the kids. Now you know why Akio (Gamera vs. Guiron) was constantly mentioning his desire to see a world that was absent of “war and traffic accidents”.

One thing about the intro that I find weird is that there's a clip of Godzilla repeatedly punching an off-screen enemy that is below him. From the tropical trees in the background, it looks like a clip from this movie or Son of Godzilla, but the shot cannot be found in either movie. I thought maybe it was in the Japanese version of Godzilla's Revenge, but that wasn't the case either. It looks like it's just a deleted clip from the fight against Gabara. Maybe they cut it because they felt the fight was becoming too one-sided.
@mikehunt4986 Жыл бұрын
I think you can spot Gabara's foot on the left side for a second or two during the clip so yeah, I'm going with your theory that it's a deleted scene.

Thanks for the video! According to the Japanese credits, and other Japanese published sources, the voice of Minilla (pronounced "Mee-nee-lah"; a portmanteau of "Miniature" & "Gojira" - a "Mini-Godzilla") was dubbed by 内山みどり (Midori Uchiyama). Being a soft tongue twister, Minilla was rechristened "Minya" to give the voice dubbers an easier go. BTW, Toho's original English rendering for アンギラス (Angirasu) was indeed "Angilas," which appears on Toho's English publicity materials for GODZILLA RAIDS AGAIN. Toho has fluctuated on their English naming conventions over the decades.

Great video. Despite Godzilla's Revenge arguably being the worst in the series it's actually one that I watched a lot as a child. This was due to it's really short runtime and kaiju action that I wasn't familiar with at the time. Kumonga's mispronounced name in the English dub still stuck with me to this day as well haha

I probably just liked how many different monsters were featured and being a child, neither knew or cared about the frankenstein's monster made of godzilla stock footage. The movie is dumb and basically just a weird fan-fiction, but it's way too amusing for me to hate

Despite it being not that good, it’s honestly relatable to me. I was alone at home a lot when I was younger. I would play with my dinosaur toys and Godzilla toys by my self and form a sort of narrative in my head. I didn’t have many friends, probably because I had a difficult time starting and having conversations with people. I would also go around looking for cool looking sticks that I could use to imagine them as something, like part of a giant monsters arm. I can relate tho the character.

The US version is so painfully dopey, even as a kid I couldn't endure it. The Japanese version gives Manila a child-like voice, making the experience on Monster Island seem more like a legitimate dream instead of an idiot's idea of what little children's fantasies are like. This poor kid lives in an urban nightmare world. I can't imagine walking home from school at that age, with factories belching poison into the sky everywhere, and entertaining myself most of the time because I have two working parents. No wonder this kid dreams about beautiful faraway islands populated by the only friend he has...an imaginary child monster. Even the bank robbers might be a figment of this kid's imagination. Remember, the legendary Ishiro Honda directed this movie. If all of us hadn't been tortured by the horrible American dub first, together with our Godzilla hating friends "You actually watch this stupid **racial slur** s-t?!?!" we might have grown up with a different opinion.
