GODZILLA vs. MEGALON (ゴジラ対メガロ) - Official Japanese Trailer [HQ]

Underground nuclear testing has angered the undersea kingdom of Seatopia!

Fed up with the testing's devastating impact on their civilization, the Seatopians unleash the mighty Megalon to teach the surface dwellers a lesson. As Megalon, the beetle-like monster with drill-like hands makes its way to the surface, a team of inventors have created one of the greatest achievements in technology... the mighty Jet Jaguar! The robot also catches the attention of the Seatopians who succeed in taking control of Jet Jaguar and use the robot to pave the way for Megalon's rage.
With Megalon on an unstoppable rampage, the inventors take control of Jet Jaguar back from the Seatopians and send the robot to get Godzilla for help. But the Seatopians call for backup from outer space in the form of Gigan! While waiting for Godzilla's arrival, Jet Jaguar does what any robot would do and grows to an enormous size to match against both Megalon and Gigan. When Godzilla appears on the scene, it's a four-way monster battle that is sure to send the bad monsters running... and flying away.
This film from 1973 is special for a number of reasons. Not only do we see Godzilla's infamous "tail slide," but we also get two new characters in both Megalon and the fan-favorite Jet Jaguar. While neither character appeared in a feature film again, Jet Jaguar is a featured character in the animated series "Godzilla Singular Point." But the resurgence of Jet Jaguar's popularity owes it all to this Showa Era film. Punch! Punch! Punch!

It's ironic how this Godzilla film was Godzilla (the franchise) at it's lowest. TV shows had taken over in Japan, so that's why they tried to capitalize on trends to get kids to go to the theater. Trends like Ultraman (Jet Jaguar), etc. Now, it's a beloved entry in the series, but at the time, the franchise was in danger of being finished, financially. Thank God, Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla released a year later on Godzilla's 20th Anniversary (1954-1974) because it literally saved the franchise because it was a huge hit.

In what way did "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" "save the franchise"? Because after "Terror of Mechagodzilla" flopped hard, Tomoyuki Tanaka couldn't get another Godzilla movie off the ground until 1984... and that was only after he decided to ignore the first movie's sequels in 1977.

@@Algeriawindows69 True, but it hit Godzilla hardest because in Japan, Godzilla movies are more expensive than a "normal" movie. Toei's action movies by comparison had budgets far lower than even the 70s Godzilla films.

I've been watching all the movies available on HBO Max. I haven't gotten to Megalon yet but I'm very excited to see Jet Jaguar in action! Thank you Toho! Also, Godzilla vs Kong was so good I watched it 7 times in theaters! I hope you allow Legendary to produce more films! Thanks again!

A buddy and I love re-watching this one for the laughs. Unironically, one of my favorites of the Showa era! Megalon just loves being a smashy kaiju, and ya' gotta respect that! Godzilla's design is adorable, I love it, and the writers and suit actors alike bring so much personality to the kaiju! Makes them very entertaining to watch! Of which there is plenty to watch since nearly half the runtime is a 1v1 matchup amping up into a four-way monster mash! Plus, can't ever forget one of the greatest pieces of music ever created: The Jet Jaguar Song. This movie is a meme, and I love it for it!

I actually think this is the worst film of the Showa Series. Maybe the worst Japanese Godzilla film in general. At least "All Monsters Attack" had its stock footage in big chunks, rather than peppering it throughout the film like this one did. And it tried to have some substance, as meager as it was, with its anti-bullying message. To me, this is just a "nothing" movie. I'd be lying if I said I didn't find it hilariously entertaining though.
