Getting sucked into your "What is the best Battle of the Bulge " game, I purchased and began to learn and play "Enemy Action Ardennes" in the solo mode. The best new-to-me historical game would be Here I Stand. I'm very lucky to know enough gamers to table this on a random Saturday. Man does that game have a lot going on but it is so good. Everyone has always had a good time and people will stop by just to watch some of it.

Being almost solely a solitaire gamer, and a second hand game buyer (from Noble Knight), I have few plays of 2024 games, but of the ones I have played, Manila: The Savage Streets, 1945 has been my favorite. Of the "new to me" plays this year, Warfighter Pacific has been my favorite over all.

Thanks for the news, as always. My best "new 2024" title is definitely Mark Herman's "Rebel Fury" - played all the scenarios and taught 2 friends, so clearly this one is sitting well. But it's followed closely by 2 older games, "Stellar Horizons" from Compass (finally got to play this bad boy over the summer, it was a blast) and recently by "Port Arthur" - a small game from Nuts! that I was really surprised by. It packs quite a punch in a little box it comes in...

Of all the submarine war-games that I have, they have been more abstract in their mechanics. The sub on mission was either on the surface or submerged - depth was not a factor. However, with the release of WOLFPACK, all of that has changed. Its addition of TDC factors has also added a bit of realism away from the abstract. For this year, WOLFPACK is my choice for top game I have purchased.

For the new game this year I’ve actually played, I’ve enjoyed “I, Napoleon;” for what I think is game of the year, I haven’t opened my copy, but the 2nd edition of “a most fearful sacrifice” seems to pop up everywhere (I’ll understand if it doesn’t count since it’s a reprint/2nd edition) Question about games like gladiators: blood & glory. Have you found that you can enjoy one theme with that style (like the hunters), but didn’t enjoy other iterations of the system? I bought western front ace and after a few attempts at it, I decided it really wasn’t my thing. But I love ancient history and especially the theme of running a gladiator school, so I’m tempted to go for this game.

Its really about managing your flight decks, how much recon will i do, and how many intercepters in the air and bombers?? when do i launch? Do i attack with my subs, or do i shadow? Because one thing is for sure: The Japanese will launch all they got at you. And the rulebook is really well written. the sequence of play player aid reffers to do the rulebook, so if there is something you need to read, you know exactly where to look for it.

Well, I can tell you that they are up to at least "S" with the Wolfpack shipping now, so only a few letters to go! I'm going to have to give Manila a shot, looks like such a challenging game. And I hope playing more is in your near future. :)

Best new game for me this year was "Traces of War" published by VUCA Simulations in 2023 (and I bought it from Noble Knight). Beautiful map and a great system that's very playable.
@ZillaBlitz12 күн бұрын
I really like that one as well. As you say, very easy to get to the table and play, and beautiful as well.

The best new game I got to play in 2024 for the first time is a tough decision. If I limit to games I own it would be a Most Fearful Sacrifice. I also got to play Shiloh: The First Day with the developer which was a great experience. I am looking forward to getting a copy of that game in the near future. An honorable mention would go to Norman Conquests

My game of 2024 would be Red Strike by Vuca Simulations. I'm looking to get into professional wargame design myself, and Red Strike is a monumental effort that is hard not to be in awe of.

I bought and/or played for the first time more than 20 wargames this year but only a few that were 2024 releases. So I’ll go with the best new-to-me game in 2024, which is the COIN series game Liberty or Death. Runners up: For the People, Paths of Glory, and Commands & Colors: Samurai Battles.

Tough question, so many great games. My pick is GaleForce 9`s "Aliens: Another Glorious Day in the Corps" - new to me in 2024. Fast-playing, highly thematic wargame of the Aliens movie. So good that I managed to bring an old friend, an 80`s gamer, back into the hobby to play this.

The favorite boardgame I played this year wasn’t the first time I played but the first time the kids from across the street played. Something had happened and I offered to watch 3 of the kids while they tended to the 4th. I broke out Milton Bradley’s classic ‘Hit the Beach’ which we all enjoyed. Why was it my fav? Because the youngest child (4) came over later on and asked ‘Mr. Michael, can we play that game again?’ Hooked. Nailed it.

And if I have to pick one for myself, it would be Circle of Fire: the Seige of Cholm. We’re using the boardgame to supplement a miniatures wargame campaign.

Skies Above Britain (2022). Nice balance of narrative and agency, plus the best rule book ever. Unfortunately, I've only managed to play a couple of actual 2024 releases so far. I do have Wolfpack on the table right now so that's a plus.

Hopefully there will be considerable improvements to Operation Rolling Thunder's map. Otherwise the game looks great.

Favorite Game of 2024 has to be *Schutztruppe Heia Safari: 1914 - 1918* by Compass Games. I've already raved about it to you, but it really is an amazing game! I snagged a copy of "Under the Med" from Noble Knight at a very nice price! Compass Games is becoming a real favorite with me. That said, "Wolfpack" seems very alluring! As far as Steve Jackson Games, I owned almost all of them at one time or another, and I never saw one on WW2... Hoping to finally get a copy of "Raiders of the Deep" from Compass now that the price is nice. I just hope they have enough stock! Thanks again for that heads up! And happy holidays to you and yours!

The best game I played in 2024 is 85 Afghanistan Graveyard of Empires, along with its expansion, 85 Alone in the Mountains. I found it fun and easy to learn, which is great since I’m just starting to get into wargaming in college with the people I meet.

A game where the rulebook is a joy to read, and both sides have the opportunity to attack and defend: OCS Korea II. The game is asymmetrical, naturally encouraging each side to play to their own strengths. The OCS rules should be required reading for any game design course.

Hey Hey Zilla! New to your channel and new to wargaming in general. My first wargame purchase was Purple Haze which I am hoping to get the time to dive into in a week or so. I kind of took a leap with this as my first wargame to test the waters. I don't know anyone in my area that is into wargaming so I was looking for something that was not only a good solo focused game but not too complex to scare me away. Would you have any other recommendations for a few games that would fit that criteria? A great solo experience is the most important and not a game that has a ton of complexity. I'm in the Phoenix, AZ area if anyone is looking for easy competition as well lmao. Thanks! *I'll also add that specific time periods or wars are not as important as a great experience. I am open to anything.
@ZillaBlitz14 күн бұрын
Purple Haze should be a good first game, just be patient and don't worry about playing your first games perfectly. :) We all make rules mistakes in the beginning of new games, so I'd recommend focusing on having fun rather than being preoccupied with perfection. :) There are a couple of older videos on the channel that might have some good recommendations in them. I want to update them soon, but here is one on beginner wargames, with a mix of solo and multiplayer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5rOoaVmgsd8itE Hope that helps, and welcome to the hobby!

I know you said "historical" wargame, but I'm going to cheat and say Burning Banners is my wargame of 2024. I love historical wargames, but anytime I can play a game in a fantasy setting I'm in! This game was a labor of love by Christopher Moeller. He did all of the game design and artwork himself, and it's amazing in both regards!
