Germany - 1973/74. I remember arriving in Germany when I was 18 back in 1973. I had taken 2 years of German in high school and 1 year of college German. I flew into Germany and went immediately to the main train station. I was practically in shock when I heard everyone speaking German! It was like, wow, this is for real. I was from a really small, rural town in California. Then I walked over to the train schedule board (or whatever you call it) and was overwhelmed by all the trains and schedules as I tried to figure out which train would take me to my destination, which was a farm job in a small northern German town. I had arranged the job through a German foreign exchange student in my college class. A month after I left this job, I ended up in Berchtesgaden. (I was hitchhiking through Germany) I went to the local employment office, and got a job working on the bobsled track. They first offered me a job on the ski slopes, but I didn't know how to ski. I wasn't prepared for the local German dialect, which I never learned while working and living in Berchtesgaden. Everybody did understand my basic German. I don't know the current employment situation in Germany, but at that time, it was super easy for me to get a job.
