I love your channel and this realism series but I have a minor criticism. When you debate realism I think it would be great if you focus more on the viability of their arms and armour with historical information and examples to reach a conclusion, rather than superlatively whether or not it was ever done historically. I think the Black Prior analysis did what I'm suggesting really well. Don't misunderstand and think I don't love your channel, keep up the great work!
@GoGoDani4 жыл бұрын
@@seany-s2987 I take no offense to it, I am always willing to improve the video for others. One of the problems that can vary from video to video is what the content consists of historically. So in this case we are talking gladiators that could be from 200-600AD with multiple different classes and types of (debatably trustworthy) accounts. Meanwhile the likes of Black Prior has a range of much more accountable and formally written sources of history that we have much more to learn from than that of the Roman Empire. It's just merely due the amount of time gap and the amount of history lost in between the thousand or so years. That being said, if you are looking for my opinion on the viability of the trident and buckler combination, you're going to have to wait until I release the (most likely part 3) animations/move set video where I will break down what Gladiator does and what I would do differently, and I'll even discuss if a buckler and trident is even a reasonable pair of weapons to use together. The reason I didn't want to discuss any of that in this episode, is due to the fact that it would open up a can of worms so to speak, and would make me end up needing to reference the animations. Next thing you know, this isn't a multipart series, it's just an hour and a half lecture. I know some people like long videos, but according to my statistics most people don't. I hope you understand and that it was a reasonable enough explanation.

I think the reason it's not a net is because the change in animation, as nets usually have weird cloth physics associated with them.

Maybe... but wouldn't rope have that as well? Both the Bolas and the Net are flexible to some extent.
@mackenziemcdaniel-paul81634 жыл бұрын
@@GoGoDani Surely it would be easier to do the bolas than the whole net, that's animating one strand of rope over 20-30 strands. And the only way I can see them doing a net animation is by them getting wrapped up similarly to how the bolas would. As if you were to animate the cloth dropping on them from above you would have to go through the trouble of running the cloth simulation.
@DavidCH54 жыл бұрын
@@GoGoDani I believe Ubisoft actually delve into the net idea at first with Glad's design, even though it was a feat, as what would eventually become the boleadoras, but they encountered various problems with the throwing of the net animation as well as the target getting out of it (Given that a net's purpose is kind of not letting you out of it), and therefore the standard for getting out of a net would be important game mechanics-wise, given that getting out of a net would take a while. And since you couldn't have such an unfair advantage (at least from my point of view), they went for the bolas for easier animation as well as gameplay balance, since with the bolas, apart from whatever physical damage you sustain from getting hit with them, it would take less time to break free out of them compared to whatever time you'd take with a net. The devs actually considering the net I believe was said in one of the Warriors Den's, though there have been so many it would be really hard to pinpoint the exact one at the exact time stamp. I hope I have made as much sense of this as it was in my mind, as I hope you understand what I wrote here. Btw, love the vids :).

For the Bola argument. I believe that they were designing the feat with net in mind. But animating and modeling of a net being thrown is not the easiest, i mean even the bola dissapears after the throw. And since they probably wanted to add the squiggling enemy under the net it would be even harder to render it. So ubi went with bola that basically does the same thing a net would in the game.

So this is just a fan theory of mine and probably not even a very hard to put together one but it's about why the Gladiator uses a buckler despite those being distinctly medieval/renaissance era shields vs the more classical era roman shields, and it's because the Gladiator _isn't_ an ancient warrior, he's a modern one. Nailing down For Honor's exact time period is pretty hard to do since we have 16th century tournament plate being worn alongside 11th century Crusader gear, but the general consensus seems to be it takes place is a "more-or-less 15th century" setting. The Gladiator is interesting, though, because he comes from the same "old empire" as the Centurion; not the exact same place as the rest of the Knights faction, but rather their "predescesors". My idea about it is that it's as if the Roman Empire never actually fell, but rather just was reduced to a single nation-state. So we have all the traditions, aesthetics and culture of ancient Rome, but in a more modern setting: Gladiatorial games are still around, obviously, but it'd make sense for the combatants equipment to change with the times. Hence why we have a gladiator wearing the very classical style helmet and armour weilding the impractical (but really cool and interesting) trident alongside a modern buckler. It's not really much of a far-fetched theory but I often see people trying to compare Centurion and Gladiator to their ancient counterparts from history despite the fact that they exist in a much later setting and, while keeping their Roman aesthetics, have updated their kit and fighting style in line with modern technological advancements.

The hooks on the trident were actually useful in gladiator combat. They were used for catching the oponent's shield, open their defense and stab to the chest or legs, depending on wich side of the shield was chaught. Sorry if it's somehow strange, I don't speak fluent english. And I'm not an expert on the topic, I just noticed it when I was watching this kind of martial art.

Could've sworn i heard from somewhere that gladiators back then didn't actually kill each other due to expenses of having one killed or even injured, and that the arenas were like a sport and gladiators were owned by wealthy people. Can anyone let me know if I heard this right or is it bogus 🤔 lol
@GoGoDani4 жыл бұрын
That's actually technically right! ...kinda. It's all about context. If we are talking late Republic Rome/ Early Empire Rome where a large majority were either slave or criminals? No, they most definitely would kill each other. Sometimes, it wouldn't even be gladiator vs gladiator. They would send in a lion or a bear and basically perform an execution by beasts, for lack of a better description. But as the Roman Empire progressed and the gladiatorial arena became a much more popular form of entertainment, some people willingly became gladiators. Along with that, some people ended up having favorite gladiators. So you would have gladiatorial bouts that wouldn't always end in death. Obviously there are always exceptions, but I think it's safe to say that it was far less visceral than the much more earlier forms of gladiator entertainment.

Lindybeige made a very interesting video on the topic a while back where he discusses volunteers becoming gladiators and how there may have been quite a bit of "cheating" going on in the arena to improve the show while actually avoiding casualties. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iX6uZ2OFa55oqJY
