I always appreciate the fact the MTA translates their information into different languages, it goes to show you just how many languages are spoken in NYC. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York City, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. As many as 300 languages are spoken along Roosevelt Ave alone! So NYC is THE international city not just because it's home to the UN and the NY Stock Exchange, but all the wonderful diverse communities that live there. I can't believe they hired Theodore from Alvin and the Chipmunks to do the A train via the Q line announcements! From what I've found, the reason the doors take longer to open at the last stop because the conductor moves from the conductor booth facing the terminating direction to the booth facing in the new direction before opening the passenger doors. The two booths are right next to each other so it's just going from the end of one train car to the beginning of the next one, but it still takes a little bit to do. And yeah, generally, you need R160s (and R143s) or newer train cars to be compatible with CBTC. On the L, the R143s were the first B Division trainsets to be CBTC-compatible at a time when CBTC was yet to be installed. They thought that 212 Kawasaki-made R143 subway cars would be enough to accommodate ridership demands for years to come, but ridership risen higher than expected, so sixty-four new R160A cars manufactured by Alstom (while R160Bs were manufactured by Kawasaki) were fitted with CBTC so they could run on the L along with the R143s. CBTC on the L was completed in early 2009, though the R160As were not CBTC-compatible until August 2010. The rest of the remaining R160 fleet (the R160Bs) has CBTC equipment installed for service on the Queens Boulevard Line. And I always love when trains approach Coney Island-Stillwell Ave and its incredible trainshed. To put things into perspective, that trainshed is around 80,000 square feet! And the roof is covered in solar panels! The roof consists of 2,730 thin-film modules from Schott AG. It has a nominal capacity of about 210 kWp (meaning kilowatts peak) which equates to an annual output of 250,000 kWh (kilowatt-hour). The solar panels provide about 15 percent of the station's power. Due to the station's location near the beach, the solar panels needed to meet stringent hurricane standards. Thus, the panels for the station were rigorously tested in a laboratory in York, PA. This makes Stillwell Avenue the first solar-powered subway station in the NYC Subway! Despite the name, Coney Island is currently a peninsula, and it turned from a barrier island into a peninsula as a result of a large section of the Coney Island Creek filled in during the 1920s and 1930s. Stillwell Avenue was named after settler Nicholas Stillwell (who lived from 1603 to 1671), who had a farm in the area and became the progenitor of an influential Brooklyn family by the same name. Plans for Stillwell Avenue began in October 1926. The Lenape once called the area Narrioch. This name has been attributed the meaning of "land without shadows" or "always in light" describing how its south facing beaches always remained in sunlight. A second meaning attributed to Narrioch is "point" or "corner of land".

Here's some Bryant Park facts: In 1686, when the area was still a wilderness, New York's colonial governor, Thomas Dongan, designated the area now known as Bryant Park as a public space. George Washington's troops crossed the area while retreating from the Battle of Long Island in 1776. The road upon which Washington's troops retreated traversed the park site diagonally. The city acquired the land in 1822. Beginning in 1823, Bryant Park was designated a potter's field (a graveyard for the poor) and remained so until 1840, when thousands of bodies were moved to Wards Island. The first park at the site was opened in 1847 and was called Reservoir Square due to its proximity to the Croton Distributing Reservoir. The reservoir held 20 million US gallons and was torn down by 1900. Its massive 50-foot-high (15 m) granite walls, which presented a vaguely Egyptian-style facade, were 25 feet thick. Atop the walls was a public promenade offering panoramic views that Edgar Allan Poe enjoyed. Reservoir Square contained the New York Crystal Palace, which hosted the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations in 1853 and burned down in 1858. The New York Crystal Palace was designed by Georg Carstensen (one of the developers of Tivoli Gardens in Denmark; one of the oldest amusement parks in the world that inspired Disneyland) and German architect Charles Gildemeister and was directly inspired by The Crystal Palace built in London's Hyde Park to house The Great Exhibition of 1851. The Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations was a World's Fair held between July 1853 and November 1854. Adjoining the Crystal Palace was the Latting Observatory, a wooden tower 315 feet (96 m) high, which allowed visitors to see into Queens, Staten Island and NJ. The tower, taller than the spire of Trinity Church at 290 feet (88 m), was the tallest structure in NYC from the time it was constructed in 1853 until it burnt down in August 1856. This tower inspired Gustave Eiffel when he built the Eiffel Tower. Today, the expo is remembered as the place where Elisha Otis demonstrated an elevator equipped with a device called a safety, which would kick in if the hoisting rope broke. This addressed a major public concern regarding the safety of elevators. Three years later, Otis installed the first passenger elevator in the US in a New York City store. The fair was also where the world's first pedal quadracycle was shown. Reservoir Square was renovated in 1870-1871, during which the modern-day park had been laid out. Several additional structures were planned for Reservoir Square but never built. These included an 1870 plan for new armory for the 7th New York Militia, an 1880 plan for an opera house, another plan in 1881 for a New York Historical Society building, an 1893 plan for relocating the New York City Hall building, and a 1903 plan for a general post office. The square was renamed in 1884 for abolitionist and journalist William Cullen Bryant. After the reservoir was demolished, the Main Branch of the New York Public Library was built at its site and opened in 1911. Some of the reservoir's original foundation can still be found in the South Court at the Main Branch. Today water is primarily supplied to New York City via its three city water tunnels. The Catskill Aqueduct water tunnel was built under Bryant Park in the early 1910s. The Bryant Park Restoration Corporation was founded in 1980 by Dan Biederman, along with Andrew Heiskell, chairman of Time Inc. and the New York Public Library. The BPRC immediately brought significant changes to remake the park into a place that people wanted to visit. The park was closed for renovations in July 1988. The four-year project to rebuild Bryant Park entailed new entrances, repairs to paths and lighting, and a redesign of the park's garden by Lynden Miller. Biederman worked with William H. Whyte, a sociologist whose influence led them to implement two decisions. One was the placement of 2,000 movable chairs in the park. The other was to lower the park itself, because Bryant Park had been elevated from the street and isolated by tall hedges prior to the 1988 redesign. The 1988 renovation lowered the park to nearly street level and tore out the hedges, though much of the park was still slightly elevated

33:04 Let me provide a quick explanation, see during the AM Rush (and *only* AM Rush) There’s a single R train that goes from 95th St in Brooklyn to 96th St on the Q. “What’s it do then?” 2 words; R160 Q. Yes, the R160’s on the Q stopped running, but that doesn’t mean they won’t run on the Q ever again, that’s what that AM Rush trip is. Once it gets to Coney Island, it does one of 2 things; 1. Goes OOS to Coney Island Yard, then enters R service again in the afternoon. *OR* 2. On the very rare chance, the train does roundtrips on the Q, usually until midday-noon.
@brayand802212 күн бұрын
Oh, by the way, recently that AM Rush trip hasn’t been happening since last week, and I’m not really sure why…

Not weird for me. Maybe weird for you guys. This is all the time. Originally, the (Q)uincy in the 80s and 90s did go to 21st Street-Queensbridge back in the day via 6th Avenue. Now it uses this way for emergency reroutes to 96th Street-2nd Avenue, if something happened on the BMT broadway line and Weekend Trackwork like this. As a MTA motorman within the B Division (Lettered Lines) within certain limitations, any line can go anywhere! As long you can get from one terminal to the next via another line! But interesting video Supertoe!!

for those who know, the r211a does not have the 96th st 2nd ave program for the A while thr r179 does, so some r211as keep it to chanber st, some changes to a q or r program, some even goes too far with the most interesting ideas. and for the r179, the chipmunk announcement is normal for the SAS reroute due to a weird malifunction.
