Oh! Don't get too close to the mouth when checking for the glands, just in case. And use glass or asbestos bedding to keep the animal safe from fire. I like to mix asbestos powder and glass slivers, with a bit of Mercury drizzled in to maintain humidity. It also seems to help them develop the raspy breathing that proves their kerosene glands are fully developed. Mine's growing so fast she's slept for a week straight! Good luck!

Anytime I talk about my leopard gecko or bearded dragon, people go "Does it bite????" Like, does your dog? Your cat? Your bird? They CAN, but if you've raised them right, they won't. That, or "Aren't you afraid it's going to eat you?" Uh. No. He's like a foot and a half long. He'd choke on the tip of my finger, okay. @idekemmmm5 жыл бұрын
I honestly don't mind the "Can it bite" questions. I think most of the time people are really asking if it will bite and if it's in that animal's particular behavior to bite, not if it physically can. Which imo is a very valid question. I wouldn't say any reptile that was raised right won't bite. I have a gtp that was raised very well and it still has an attitude. If someone were to run up to me and pet it, they'd probably get tagged. If someone ran up to me, asked if it bites, and then kept their distance after me saying yes, that'd be much smarter. I also have a leo I got from someone as a retired breeder. While I take good care of her, I don't think she got much interaction from her previous owner so she does try to bite sometimes. It's good to ask that question rather than assume an animal's behavior. Regardless of how they were raised or even if they're typically considered a mild mannered reptile like a leo.

I get asked if I am afraid of our red tailed boa eating my toddler. The boa is in a solid wood enclosure with a solid wood frame plexiglass door that has a padlock and the gal eats small rabbits. Yes a bite would be bad. No she won't eat my kids.
@surtu92215 жыл бұрын
Theoretically speaking, on the one blue moon day you didn't lock up properly or someone was helping you right before a big New Years party, the snake could escape it's enclosure, make it to your toddler's room, randomly decide to grab and wrap the child, the child would be unable to breath properly to call for help and you're still at the party downstairs and can't hear the baby monitor, and even if the snake can't successfully ingest the toddler it might panic and summarily asphyxiate them... ... But your child has a higher chance of being killed by the family golden retriever, or one of the visiting New Years party guests, or *lightning.* You probably get asked the question enough that it annoys you that people think you put no thought into the care and keeping of your own animals; they're acting like you're naive or delusional. I'm assuming the reason your snake has padlock on its enclosure is because you both respect and care for the well-being of the snake and have thought of the ways it could potentially escape and do harm unto itself, and for the snake's best interest have made it difficult to escape. Even that much foresight is likely enough to prevent weird hypothetical scenarios from ever playing out.

I think the stupidest misconception about feeding snakes frozen foods is that they have some sort of hunting instinct that only live can satisfy. This goes back to the tendency for certain pet owners to assign canine behaviors to their reptiles because it's easier to understand. Snakes don't have a hunting Instinct. They're opportunistic feeders. In the wild they are just as likely to eat something recently killed on the ground as they are to strike live prey. And snakes don't hunt. They wait for a field mouse or a frog to come to close to their territory and strike when opportunity presents itself. They have no instinctive desire to chase down prey in most situations like wolves do. They wait for food to come to them

Breanna Barnes when your sneks reach a point of photosynthesis you can stop watering them, however mist them about 1-2 times a week to ensure that they stay hydrated (keeping them at around 20-80% humidity is good). Also, I wouldn’t recommend to completely stop feeding your corn snake, as they can turn gay after a while or in some cases they can start identifying as an attack helicopter . You can, however, keep them on an air-only diet if you monitor you snake well and keep the temperature somewhere lower than your house temperature. You also need to make sure your snake gets enough sunlight for the air-only diet, or they’ll turn gay within a few days.

Explain to them that in the wild they have drastically shorter lifespan’s and stay in the same tree their whole life. i love my family but they have unfortunate problem of being incredibly gullible when it comes to snakes, and they've got some crazy friends. i've lost count of the times i've felt like i want to die hearing things they've come up with. just recently they convinced a family member that you need to get bulletproof glass to house a snake that you need to section off part of an entire ROOM for a boa and that they're killing machines who will die just to kill you. im not exaggerating even in the least, the bulletproof glass thing left me dumbstruck for a second because my mind had to reboot trying to understand that. that was a long day.

Tell them that those 12 foot long Burmese pythons in pictures that swallow deers almost always die when they eat things that big, and that most of them know when something is too big to eat or not food. They only bite when they’re in food mode (obviously that’s not true but it eases their mind and bites are so rare that they won’t know the difference) Also tell them that since 1978 only 17 people in the US have died to nonvenomous snakes. For comparison 450 people have died by dogs and nearly 600 have died from horses since then

"Why don't you live feed?" When I'm asked about this, it's simple for me: In Australia, legally, we can't live feed here. It's considered cruel because the prey can't escape and may feel undue fear. Basically, we don't have a choice.
