Going back to A.L.I.C.E. and for good reasons. I hated the UTG "Tactical " vest I had. Here is why. Actually the gear I'm calling A.L.I.C.E. gear is M -1956 L.B.E. but it is very similar so who am I to Split hairs?

Great video! Once you load up one those MOLLE vests with gear and ammo I find one's center of gravity way too high. It is much more comfortable to carry that weight around your waist on ALICE gear. Yes, those plastic vests are amazingly hot. Plus, in winter it makes a lot more sense to put an ALICE LBE rig over your winter clothes than wrapping a vest around your jacket killing all of the jacket's insulating properties.

Gotta say, I appreciate you keeping it real and telling it how IT IS! I remember the same kinda days back in Florida when I had to decide which bills weren't gonna get paid. Stay up and stay strong man! Thank God trouble don't last always. Oh yeah...think I might ditch my tactical vest for the same reasons!

Another thing I thought of after this video, is, with a vest and all those mag pouches, how big a target would we be in the prone position. Standing in a shoot out is asking to be shot. With all those pouches elevating the body up off the ground and because the pouches are primarily located over the abs I bet it would be difficult to aim the rifle. Unless your up on your elbows which makes an even bigger target for Mr. I ain't an American to shoot at. Not good. Po folks got Po ways but we can survive.

You're right! I hadn't thought of that since I've never gone prone in my vest. Don't have any ballistic weapons yet either but I can see where you're coming from.

Man, watching this brought back some memories. I'm looking for some new LBE and the newer stuff ain't impressing me. I had the same type of LBE back at Bragg in the 70's, except using a M16, not a M14. I loved resting the 16 on the right side mag pouch. Plus you could add one or two more pouches and increase your load out.

Thanks for sharing. Since this video I was given a set of LBV 88 shoulder straps/vest and so far have found them very comfortable. Haven't tried them out in hot weather yet. I also added two more mag pouches. Good luck finding something newer that will work for you.

The best part of ALICE gear is that it is true gunslinger gear. Wear it up high, wear it down low, wear it how you want. It fits everyone. Modular in all aspects and dirt cheap to replace.

Alice is the best. Less is more. Its crazy how much gear people carry these days. Since what...? 2005 ish they've added like 60lbs onto the average soldier? Alice gear was good, still works, and didn't need changing. You can find Alice stuff Brand new dated as late as 2003 even. For practically nothing. I've tried molle, chest rigs, even the lbv88e. All new. But guess what? I'm going going back back to ALICE ALICE.

I have always enjoyed my 782 gear (Marine Alice), it sets up great and adjusts to best wear and comfort I could never get in a vest. I prefer the "H" harness over the newer "Y" harness. The ammo pouches are truly multi purpose and carry a bevy of survival gear. Canteens can be added for hot weather. Butt bag carries food and "woobie". I have worn mine in the Corps during combat ops and as a civilian for hunting/camping/hiking. Modifies quickly, carries everything and you can remove it quickly and best of all go into a prone laying position comfortable. A must in hunting. The vest I have found (and worn) in close quarter tactical situations.....but for general field use it does not work well. I will always keep the ALICE 782 set up.

Another thing also is that Alice is kinda going up. A lot of people don't have surplus stores and some of them don't have Alice gear. And some online surplus stores have them. But to get the from there it's almost $100 to get a full web gear and less from store. Another thing too is that you have best videos and things that I agree. Keep up with the awesome work dude!!

I hear ya and am with ya. I got my ALICE gear and never looked back. MOLLE is a bit pricey and I'm STILL not convinced that it can handle the load an ALICE LC-2 system can handle. Plus, I carry a mix of civilian and military gear which ALICE can handle quite well with little or no modification.

ALICE gear has one other advantage over a lot of the MOLLE gear (at least vests anyway) in that being modular, if any part wears out, you can replace just it. If the suspenders wear out or otherwise get damaged, you replace only the suspenders, or the belt, or the buckles. On most of the vests I've seen if something in the suspension system gets torn up, you have to trash the vest. And the vests that don't have Velcro still have plastic adjustment turnbuckles which is not optimal.

@mackdaddy1911a1
@mackdaddy1911a1 10 жыл бұрын
shaydeinsun It's dirt cheap, tough and reliable. Plus it's a cooler setup because it doesn't trap body heat in your core. I bought everything displayed in this video cheaper than just a plate carrier or tactical vest. And yes I replaced the belt and H harness since this video was published. I could buy an entire A.L.I.C.E. belt order and Large pack with frame and fanny pack for less than half the price of a new large MOLLE ruck. Besides I run only one rifle, or one shotgun. Don't need the versatility it offers. Not knocking it just don't need MOLLE.
@shaydeinsun
@shaydeinsun 10 жыл бұрын
I had meant that for a vest that MOLLE was in my opinion the way to go, The FLC's have mesh in them so they are somewhat breathable. I agree that MOLLE rucks are stupid expensive and that ALICE packs are great especially for the price. I also prefer the ALICE belt to any MOLLE pistol belt. I'm gonna run an FLC with an ALICE style belt w/modified shoulder straps.

I totally agree. Yeah man, same problem, 5' 3/4 (5'7 in combat boots) 160 now I'm working out again. Stuff just don't fit! And here in AZ any vest, mesh or not , is too damn HOT in the f-ing desert! Went back to my good old suspenders too. Can adjust pouches to my liking and there are more different and weird pouches out there if anyone looks. Alice packs, particularly the medium with frame is so much better than molle. I've talked to a lot of infantry guys who agree, have ditched the molle, particularly after breaking that ridiculous plastic frame, and gone back to an alice pack. Lets not mention the price difference. I can do a whole LCE harness set-up with pouches and canteens at surplus store prices for what ONE freekin Molle pouch goes for retail! Totally awesome vid, thanks! and yes..I remember when that and wild thing were brand new..I must be old too. LOL

mackdaddy1911a1 Heck yeah! There's lots of good fishing, plinking and camping spots here. Holler next time yer here with a layover for a day and we'll take you out. I was so inspired bu the vid, though I have my 80's nylon Alice (same story as you), I had to go out and round up some canvas M1956 over the last month and try it all out! I hope I didn't get ripped too hard. Belt $9, field pack $12, WWII canteen cover $5, Arctic canteen and cover $9, spaghetti sleeping carrier straps $7, Field pack adapter $9, and I had to pay $25 for long size suspenders on Ebay, nothing but Medium in the stores here, maybe they're shrunk a bit, but just a bit too short for me even with pack and ammo pouches on either side. Seems weird since I'm 5'7, but long fits good. Some of it was un-issued "New" and really green, but all of it had green copper oxide. Cleaned up quick with CLP. Re-blued the metal with one of those cheap Birchwood Casey gun blue pens. Then I hit it all with two layers of spray can water proofer to seal the blue and see if I can conquer the rot problem. It doesn't seem too heavy. I do have an AR so I have two M1967 20rd pouches but I would like to get some canvas. Didn't they make an intermediate "Universal" pouch that would fit either Betsy or a 16? Where's a good place to get M1956 if you know? Also, I keep my 1911 in an old nylon M9 alice (Bianchi) holster & I dug out an old WWI double mag pouch I got a long time ago for $7 to use with it. What is that one you use on your rig?

This is an old video. I still use the belt but added an LBV 88 a couple of years ago that a viewer sent to me. I like it but I miss the ease of getting the shoulder straps on and off. The 14 is now in an EBR Chassis and I have a new Colt Combat Unit 1911. It rides in a thigh rig. The suspension is made by Blackhawk and the holster is a SOC . I just don't have enough real estate to put the holster on my belt. I do not like the leg rig though. Just don't have anywhere else for it. The 4 mag pouches on the belt take up so much room if I am wearing a pack . No room left.

LOL, don't feel so bad, I also coughed up $79 for a 10-22 Butler Creek hotlips mag at the height of the ban when I was dirt poor at the time too. Yeah it hurt, didn't it! I had gotten one before that for only $20, but by then you just couldn't find anymore anywhere. Man I love those mags! Yeah, they're $20 now again, but the new ones just don't seem the same quality. The ALICE was developed specifically for weight reduction, the army lost that doctrine when they went "Tacti-Derp" with the MOLLE. This video is probably that best way that I can demonstrate my anger at this man's modern Army. I'm currently leaving the army and it feels like a divorce but goddammit I've seen too many friends get broken by it without even seeing combat they want soldiers now to fight the enemy with 60-80 lbs on their shoulders. The Army drastically shifted from trying to reduce the fighting load of the soldier to doubling the fighting load, I suspect the DOD only started this policy of issuing 50 lb armor everybody to make sure there were considerably less combat fatalities but with ulterior motives. Lets be honest the Military had Barely enough troops to fight Iraq and Afghanistan, if casualty rates were as high as Vietnam then with no draft it would have been a disaster, BUT IS IT RIGHT TO ORDER A LIMITED NUMBER OF SOLDIERS TO PATROL UP RIDGES OF 60 DEGREES PLUS INCLINE IN 100 DEGREE HEAT WITH UPWARDS OF 70 LBs ON A DAILY BASIS ON A 15 MONTH DEPLOYMENT. The original issued MOLLE even had faulty ball and socket attachment that no doubt injured numerous men's backs. If you don't believe me look up what soldiers had to endure in up in Nuristan and Kunar READ Jake Tapper's THE OUTPOST there's an LT in that book that would've gotten his ass fragged for what he put his platoon through had he been in Vietnam or watch the video here on KZbin of soldiers in Iraq boots melting

If you want a more comfortable yoke system get your hands on a surplus load bearing vest, remove the shoulder harness, thread the straps from ALICE suspenders into the shoulder harness hardware, and replace the metal belt clips with 550 cord. If you want to go the extra mile take a surplus foam sleeping mat and cut a belt pad out of it and secure it to the inside of the pistol belt with 100mph tape once all the pouches are attached. Keeps the metal ALICE clips from digging into your side and offers a little added floatation for creek crossings etc.

No worries. Friend of mines dad was Naval Special Warfare back in the late 80s and 90s and they had some pretty ingenious rigs. My old setup was what I described but I replaced the back panel of the LBV with a ALICE buttpack which places it up off the belt line to the mid back so you can use the belt space for a E&E kit or medical pouch. I still have some photos if you want me to email them to you I would be happy to.

Great and very lively review. I have a lot of MOLLE/PALS gear but I am going to buy some surplus ALICE gear for hiking as the suspenders/belt is a nice go-between when I don't want or need the extra weight of a full pack. And backpacks are hot! Btw, are you from Georgia? You remind me of a co-worker from there. I'm in Missouri. Ever get a better job, or still doing handyman stuff?

I bought a drop leg thigh holster for my army issue 1911 .It had all the same issues Velcro and plastic belt buckles didn't take me long to scrap the darn thing . Went back to the only thing i know the shoe string , and bubblegum and duck tape budget of home-brew gear that all ways gets the job done .

nice to hear words about ALICE, i have some one - as the failing hooks are the pain in the ass in the battlefield ;) but they are really the minor problem compared to the MOLLE sound and heat problem - the winter camo is not so big problem, as the wests could be produced at any camo u need

Rangerize it. Strip as much metal as possible from the belt AND suspenders. Use 550 cord for belt adjustment. Use 550 cord to secure harness. One place to keep ALICE clips is on the buttpack, in case it's to be removed for rucking. Ammo and canteen pouches can be secured by weaving the cord through the holes in your belt. Almost as good as molle gear, lighter than clips, and no hot spots. Or get some zip ties, along with lots of spares.

I have the opposite situation. I am a big guy. 6'1" 250 lbs and I have a hard time finding stuff that fits me because some it is too damn small. I like the ALICE gear stuff as well, have an ALICE pack with the wildcat mod, and am going to get my load bearing equipment dialed in as a woodland day hike pack. MOLLE isn't bad gear and the UTG vest blows chunks. However there are molle chest rigs in which you can position the gear however you want it. I know you can't afford it right. I don't get a lot of money in and I have to either save, wait for the price of some things to go down and buy a piece at a time. MOLLE and ALICE gear are surprisingly interchangeable. You can even buy ALICE to MOLLE adapters. I hope your situation changes for the better and that you can get a good job soon. Its a shame that you can't go back to school and learn a new set. Good video. Whatever you do, don't let a crappy UTG chest rig get you down on MOLLE gear! PS: Pardon my ignorance but what type of rifle is that?

Good reasons to dislike a vest rig no matter what gun you run. Except for the Ranger 1990s combat vest, the UTG is a 30 minute breaching rig, not a combat rig. In another vid of yours you were having trouble wearing the LC2 with the large ALICE pack. When doing so the belt must come higher than the waist and only hold magazine pouches in the front. Probably could attach your knife and a combat dressing to the belt as well while rucking. The shoulder pads should be slick, no knife etc, while rucking. One downfall of the Ruck is , the heavier it is, it moves away from the beefier part of your shoulder muscles. The fix is easy. A sternum strap can be easily be made and sewn in place. For patrolling its fine to be loaded down like the Clampets on their way to Hollywood, but not when rucking. Airborne would jump with many of the pouches attached and fill them on the ground. On my pack straps and LC2 suspenders I have a quick attach for the butt of my AR. Adding anything more to two sets of shoulder pads around your neck is a no go. Supporting the butt of the long gun with the shoulder strap is a huge benefit imho. I bring along a 2 point sling in my pocket or buttpack for certain applications. Being able to quick detach the long gun also allows for opposite shoulder transition. Your knife and extra pouch appears in the way for left fighting from cover. Dropping pack right now is helpful not not a game changer during a lethal encounter. If someone's skills are lacking to prevent a surprise, it will not change the out come of a sniper or ambush. Whether alone or in a small squad, you can't afford to leave behind any gear or supplies, unless it is to assault or ambush the ambushers. It would be helpful to know your particular mission, what you think you would be facing or what you would be doing. Best be cacheing resupply items. I know we talked some about the WW2 Ruck not weighing more than 40 lbs. I am in training to carry wt now that I am on the other side of back surgery. My battle rattle will not exceed 15 lbs: LC2 rig, ammo, water, etc, and firearms. My Ruck will not exceed 35 lbs. that's a total of 50lbs except for clothes and footwear. At 63 years old, that's enough. The video I did on the Paint Your ALICE Pack, and DIY ALICE Frames, showed the medium pack with two sustainment pouched attached and a 18 oz frame sheet with an aluminum stay. The DIY frame sheet, pack and two pouches weight a total of 5 lbs. I happened to have positioned two 1" webbing compression straps on the large ALICE pack which allowed me to also snap attach the MOLLE sustainment pouches to the bottom webbing and the top compression strap. I have not weighed the large yet. All my modifications that required sewing to gear or packs were down with a home sewing machine, 18 gauge TopStitch sewing needle, and heavy duty thread. No machine, find someone who will do it for you, or see if a Tailor will do it. Supplies can be found locally. Plenty of webbing and buckles at goodwill stores on carry bags, etc for cheap. Walmart does carry replacement buckles. A can of spray paint changes black to desired color. Don't paint male end buckles as they become difficult to insert. Your sleep sleep system is to big. Have you tried firing your weapon prone with your pack on? One of the big complaints with newer military packs was soldiers could not lift up their heads without hitting the pack because it extends up to high. Your bedroll may have the same effect. Again, I have a Wiggy's bag for cold temps. One is a 20F and the other a 0F. I will only be bring one for my wife. I run a 2lb sleeping bag from Walmart. For milder temps I run a woobie, and poncho. I pack a 4 oz SOL Mylar bivvy sack to plus up temp range of either system. Both systems can be combined. The woobie has snaps added to configure it into a bag or 3 sided shelter, and a 14-16" zipper in the Middle so I can where it with or without the poncho. I my wife is static and safe, and it's really cold I can fit the Compressed Wiggy's bag in the medium pack. Layering is not just for clothing but also for your sleep system. I like your vids brother. Stay safe.
