@Dan_Ranger you are blending out 10 years of development and innovation. Being a gigging artist myself, I don't see the advantages of heavy, costly, and fragile tube amps.

@@lemac3200I primarily, prefer using amps live. I’ve gigged all the modellers within those years. It’s a personal choice. Some gigs I’ve even used a little Mooer pedal. Amps are no or more less fragile than modellers, I’ve had Kemper reboots mid gig, beer all over a Helix LT, lost my whole rig in a rucksack 😂. In 40 years of gigs I’ve had 3 repairable amp failures. I’ve never been anti digital, just pro amp ;)

@@Dan_Ranger spilling a beer is always fatal to any device. Amps and modeler alike. Kemper devices are a bit dated. As I said, there were 10 years of development since then. My Headrush Gigboard never made me any trouble. I'm not anti amp neither. But in my case, traveling light with public transport, an amp has never been an option. And I never needed one for great sound, either.

Yess!!! I also have a full digital pedalboard, with the ability to use with a cabinet (FM3 + SD Powerstage 170). But sometimes I use my Synergy SYN-2 (SLO and Friedman BE-BB modules) with an ENGL 840/50 power amp + a pedalboard mostly with analog pedals, no multieffects. I love both worlds - the digital pedalboard is very practical, space saver, efficient, but the full tube rig is a BEAST.

The more I look at a Synergy setup, it makes so much sense. Seeing Vai's live videos has turned me on to that. A couple modules with something like an AxeFX and a power amp (the Fractal can go direct to the house and function as an effects loop and midi/channel controller with an FC12 while you have your actual amp on stage) just seems to work and be simple, efficient and relatively compact.

I ended up using 3 different speakers simultaneously to capture my Mesa 2:50 and a two notes le clean preamp into Tonex as a custom capture. 2 SM57'S and a 57 beta. Used a Diezel Herbert pedal in front of all that. Now it sounds just about the same as the in room sound when running direct to PA. I think the multiple speakers was key.

I'm just a bedroom guitarist and have played on an FM9 for two years and it's definitely a cool device... but man i missed the overtones and response of a tube amp, so i went and purchased a Peavey 6506 1992 Original and Friedman JEL-50 and a BE412 cab, so now the sonic territory I'd use in the FM9 is covered. Debating on keeping the FM9 for effects, though i have plenty of pedals to cover that, too.

I live in a flat & tried that stuff, I couldn't get to grips with it. Of course, living in a flat & love playing through a 150watt Stoneham Model T (way better than a Sunn) and a 4x12, you're going to annoy a few people. Still, I found a solution. TAD Silencer in 16ohm. Attenuators are great and in my opinion are way better. I'm getting a full on tone with the valves cooking nicely at a volume you'd get watching TV at night. Of course, you're not getting the sound pressure, speaker movement etc. but it's just way better.

The only thing I really dislike about scaled down rack guitar setups, when you have units that are full depth like that power amp, you end up needing deeper racks, additional spaces for power conditioners and the whole concept of being compact goes out the window. With the rack covers it ends up being just as cumbersome or more as a head with a flight case imo.

@@rikardocarvalho Latency is a thing, too. I mean, it's pretty low on modern modelers, but for fast technical stuff it's still somewhat noticeable. The immediate response of analog amps, whether tube or solid state, is very pleasant to have when you play 200+ bpm brutal death or grind. I do like compact solid state solutions, though. A small rack build with an almost weightless class D power amp is awesome.

As a 'nothing but tubes' guy, I thought about trying the Synergy. As an electrical engineer, I spotted all the SS circuitry that should have been tubes in the 'modules', let alone the lower voltages. Then I spotted the NES type card connection with shite tensioners. That's a deal breaker for me, and a possible source of your cut outs. Try some cleaner on the card and pins, as ANY oxidation would screw up those poor connections.

Go back to real amps and/or hybrid thing. I use tube amps and two notes stuff for cab simulation if non mic'ed flawless signal is needed from modeler world. In the mix you could make both sound the same, but modeler is always a modeler of certain setup. You can't mimic the feeling, speakers breathing when you play and how it affects your playing. Playing around with analog gear checking how different things affect tone is way more fun than some LCD screen preset.

For me the almost perfect hybrid rig is my Victory Super Kraken (100W in a very convenient size) with a rack Two Notes Torpedo Live for cab sims a a good effects unit in the amp fx loop. In my case a HX Stomp, also cozy in a pedalboard. I mainly use the amp sound, but I have the chance to bypass the preamp for specific patches and use the HX emulations direct to the Kraken power amp. The Torpedo Live is a load box, so I can use it with or without a real cab. Best of both worlds.

Having said that I now live in the countryside I have no neighbors and I can blast as much as I like...the only question is my eardrums 😁. But looking at that, and I might make no sense as I am not a pro; at over 3K only for the Synergy stuff...and then the rack...it isn't actually cheap. And also the size of it all does not really differ from a real amp so....what is the point? Why not simply take an amp...you have so many!!! 👽🤘

Ah.. The cycle has completed once more. Don't worry. We'll all be going back to digital stuff before you know it. I've been gigging the hybrid setup for a while now running tube amps with some form of load box (usually my ox box) out to the Quad Cortex for effects and then stereo effects L/R out to both the PA and an FRFR behind me on stage. The nice part about the Ox is that I can still run a normal speaker cab if I want to bring that instead of an FRFR. If I bring the Mark VII, I leave the Ox Box at home and just run DI out from the amp into the QC. Easily one of the simplest and best sounding rigs I've ever used and I've taken my SYN1 on stage a couple of times for module reviews and just run that into the loop return of the VII but honestly, the SYN1 still sounds great just running straight into the QC with some IR's.

As someone who has recently dived into digital with tonex, I prefer the sound of a digital capture/model going out into a poweramp+cab over an IR setup. I own a rockerverb 50 that I love as well, its just nowhere near as versatile or portable as digital for smaller sets/rehearsals. IRs can be good, but depends so much on the source that its coming out of, if the PA is ass, you'll sound ass. With real cabs (and amps) you get a speaker thats designed for guitar, along with a construction that usually projects sound and thumps it up

It fits in an Orange Tiny Terror bag and its party trick for me is the guitar/hifi toggle: perfect to compensate for preamps or models that can sound a tad too bright or dark.

I have 4 different tube heads and 4x12 cabs , The heavier the club the heavier the amp I bring. My 4x12 cabs feedback perfectly with my guitar and it"s a part of my playing style. But I use a sim at home.

The Victory Kraken in combination with a small pedalboard for FX is also an awesome option! It's a very portable and light full blown 50Watt tube head and it's slays!

MAN now that you got me hooked on your fake sounds 😂 Still playing my Rivera Hammer and TC Electronics GForce with a barely recognisable self midified Hughes&Kettner Tubeman, since 96 or so. And then I lifted your rack and thought „NOT THAT FAR OFF“ 😅 my bandmate stocked up on a mini Kemper with lots of Ola patches. We directly go to DI and monitor on stage with the stereo power amp. Well, got my weekly typing done at least. Chug on, bro! 🖤

Ask synergy for the small new lunchbox head, with IR. Still tubes, less weight.

I'm using the Engl Fireball 25 and i actually prefer it over the large 100w 4-channel stuff. Never really wanted to afford a Synergy rig but seems to be quite practical!

Synergy or revv, with a fractal fm3 or vp4 is magic. I do prefer an analog drive, and I use a 4cm gate, but I love what I get with this

I might recommend a 4 space rack for those . With real tubes its going to get a bit warm. A 4 space would provide some ventilation.

This is why I'm not worried about the future. A lot people went to modulars but eventually come back to solid state/ tubes etc... HELL YEAH

It seems to me, that this rig is not much different from a regular tube amp rig. So, digital still has the advantage, when it comes to mobility and costs.

I started playing in the early 80s, so I predate anything digital by at least a decade. And I never owned anything digital until about 15 years ago. When I want to go 100% and actually feel what I am playing, I go with one of my tube amp rigs. But my practice amp is a Katana Artist gen 3. And if I want to record quickly, I would go digital. So I am all over the place as far as "amplifiers" go. If you buy the right gear, it will sound good. It doesn't matter if it's tubes, SS, or digital.

Always loved the idea of the SYN-2 with my VHT 2/90/2 but £800 for an empty preamp unit with no modules is still a little hard to swallow at this time. Love the idea of having a VH4 module next to a Fender twin or something.

Full modelers are a useful solution for almost anything, but it doesn't change the fact they are still a compromise compared to real amps. Synergy is the perfect chameleon and the true successor to traditional amps. You can use it as the base full fledged amp rig and also as a preamp section for cab modeling or just DI out.

I've been gigging with the Helix for a few years and then on a whim built a pedal board rig which, while solid state, was more enjoyable and that got me playing my big amps again and looking for a similar solution. A full synergy isn't in my budget at the moment unfortunately

Looking forward to getting the 2 slot and the 50/50 myself for home use. You should give Salvation Audio a look, they do preamps that fit Synergy slots, covering alot of amps that aren't in the Synergy lineup

Yayayaya!!! Let’s gooo! À great tube amp sounds better. It has that response and “oumff” that modelers are not as great. I recently bought a savage 120 mk2 and it’s just insane. Would agree that for touring it’s les convenient.

I like the Synergy stuff too, but for a guy with a small studio and not even being a guitar player, it’s too expensive. But nothing beats real tubes, so I went with a ENGL E658 Steve Morse signature. Works great, but I still miss the real miced up speaker sound. So soon I will add a Grossmann iso cab. It’s a small German company and their iso cabs are awesome. For live use they have a version in a flight case. Great for live when using inears.

I've added a Soldano Astro 20 to my collection... experimenting A/B/Y comparisons with the Kemper Stage and each in different mixer channels at our rehearsal space. Potentially having some rig setups where I can four cable the Soldano with the Amp and Cab removed from the chain. (Need a 7 pin to 5 pin Midi cable to use the Kemper for the pedal board and channel/IR selection.) ☮❤🎶

I guess you said the Synergy was doing 100w at the end, but I know for sure the Fryette 2x50w stereo power amp does mono 1x100w. Glad to see you going back to real amps, I hate seeing bands with a quiet stage setup, especially if I'm right up front.

I’ve just been using a Friedman IRX with a 10 band connected post cab sim, and a 10 band in front of the preamp. Just take out some low end in front of the amp and bump up the 60hz -250hz post speaker emulation and you can’t tell the difference
