How I see it, Harold Camping kept hoping he would be raptured because he feared the act of dying. He was elderly, he could feel his body failing piece by piece, and would much rather be magically teleported to Heaven. A painless, sudden transition that was guaranteed to end in Heaven or to die in a cataclysm with the knowledge that many, many others were dying with him as well was preferable to dying slow and alone in a hospital bed. Death is scary, and western culture tends to alienate it further than other cultures do. For all that he preached, he was afraid, plain and simple.

To explain why those words were connected to numbers (you specifically asked why Heaven = 17), you just need to understand numerology. This is the practice of turning words into numbers and adding them up to mean different things, and has roots in alphabets like Greek and Hebrew where each letter is directly connected to a number and this connection is more obvious. I don't remember exactly how to calculate it anymore, but it's one of those little "huh?" things I've never forgotten about. I remember when this happened, but it didn't catch me very much and it all kinda got mixed up with the Mayan calendar stuff and all that as a bunch of silly apocalypse predictions.

And the fact that Camping used numerology to get his “numbers”, a completely bs thing that most Christians also don’t believe in and is the religious equivalent of astrology. Like it just assigns random numbers to concepts/words and claims that means something significant, ex- consciousness = “X” = something meaningful just because 🤷♀️ It’s a weird “science” thing from the past that doesn’t actually make sense. So the fact that he used it, especially when he viewed the big churches who invented it as corrupt, was always weird to me.

@RS-fy9hb3 жыл бұрын
@@warbacca1017 yeah, but they're coincidences, and that's also why it isn't very sciency. Science is used to set some conditions and restrictions we can use to predict outcomes, and that's how we verify hypothesis and how we make them actual theories. (Scientific theories are widely accepted, and is what the public considers facts). Not that I don't think there are some coincidences, but astrology specifically is just bs. People laugh at the ones who truly believed and made fun of them. But the reality is - those people spent their money NOT to have fun or for personal gain. They spent it to spread a message they TRULY believed, to save as many people as possible. I can't bring myself to find it funny, cause those people however misguided they were - they exhibited the best humanity have to offer as well. Care for others at your own expense. Harold Camping also wasn't doing it for money - he TRULY believed. He spent his fortune warning people as well. It was not malicious, it was not predatory. Simply unstable person with true conviction, doing his best to warn people and try and save them.

We don't laugh at their misfortune and mistakes, we laugh at them for being so gullible to believe that religious nonsense so much that they are willing to spend their entire wealth on it. I truly wonder how many people actually stopped and thought for at least a minute, perhaps even critically questioned it, before acting on Mr. Camping's predictions. To me it shows that a great portion of people do not think for themselves before spending thousands of dollars on wild ideas or promises and instead are just native, gullible idiots, which is not something that should be encouraged or excused.

There is always ALWAYS something more behind the story you read in a tabloid about people going to jail for jaywalking. You need to check other outlets to find out the jaywalker attacked the cops trying to give him a fine, or had an arrest warrant from another state, or hell, was just on probation after being released from jail, etc etc etc, but the tabloid story got the clicks.

So ask yourself - if crime is at it's lowest EVER, why do we have more prisoners than 20 years ago? Simple - FOR PROFIT prisons.
