28:00 my family stopped going to church because the weakness and sin of people. One guy steals church money raised for a new church building(went to Las Vegas), another damns people to hell because they miss a day of a week long revival... Flawed leaders and their own ignorance and sin pushed us away. We were also in non denominational churches. My parents taught me to question things in life early so I always had trouble with organized religion. I was the kid with a million questions. People in church liked it at first, the interest, but started to get annyond with it over time. We started doing our own thing with a small group once every other Sunday just reading the bible and talking about a topic of faith. You don't need large groups of people to worship even more so today with how easy it is to connect to people if thats what you wish. I don't really believe much anymore. I have my own ideas on faith and God today.

You shouldn't be forced to 'get saved' when you're a child. You don't understand the gravity of it, what it means, you don't KNOW what you're doing really! That should be you're choice as an adult. Christian guilt is definitely a real thing. Every loud noise, I literally thought it was the rapture! For Halloween, (I was like 10) instead of going to a haunted house, my parents took me and my siblings to the religious equivalent (?) where they simulated some teens drinking and being 'bad', then they died drunk driving. They were sent to be judged by God and then sent to hell and tortured. It was terrifying as a child.

So I gotta comment about the end discussion. I’ve never thought about the child abuse angle to all this, but I was raised Christian and I was reminded that because my Grandma’s teachings about Hell and the world ending scared me so badly, I constantly had impending feelings of dread, because I was terrified the world might end at any moment. This was when I was like 7 or 8, and the more I think, it’s really concerning. I’m sorry you guys had your own issues, I think there can be good in organized religion but anymore I think most churches are only used to attract people for money or for the congregation to get clout among each other.

@@pezdispencer113 What kind of a sentiment is that? I understand not being a pushy asshole about spreading your beliefs, but the fact remains that in the minds of many religious people, they're charged with trying to convert people because if they die and are not saved, they suffer unspeakable torment. "Live and let live" is tantamount to watching someone drown and not doing anything because they might not be receptive of your help.
@TheAngryXenite3 жыл бұрын
@Jethus: the forgotten brother of jesus That doesn't matter in this context. You have the free will to sin, yes. That doesn't change anything about the fact that sin is fatal to your immortal soul and if you die without repentance, you go to hell. That's what conversion is; attempting to convince someone of this in the hopes that they will change their behavior and find their way to God, a goal that brings you peace while alive and spares you Hell after you die.
@jonttul3 жыл бұрын
@@TheAngryXenite Yeah cool, except there is no hell or heaven and no god. With everything we now know about the age, sheer vastness of the universe and the evolution of life on Earth the idea that this is all controlled by some all powerful hobo in the sky with nothing better to do and the only "evidence" of his existance is a book of bronze age myths that has been rewritten and censured by men of power for centuries is nothing less than a mental sickness. Delusion.
@TheAngryXenite3 жыл бұрын
@@jonttul Yes, yes, you're so very rational and obviously way too open-minded and freethinking for religion. Two things. One, it's not me who is intimidated by the sheer scale of the universe and the evolution of life. Most Christians at least aren't young earthers who think God poofed us into existence 12,000 years ago or less, accept evolution and the age of the universe, etc. Funnily enough, the idea that men are so tiny and insignificant compared to the vastness of space and time isn't really that dangerous to Christians because *we already believe we're small and insignificant.* It's a take from someone who's so used to regurgitating atheism + talking points from 2012 to keep saying that shit. Second, even if you actually turn out to be right, how does that matter in the context of what I said? Whether right or not, Christians believe they are obligated to try and save people to spare them hellfire. While the ones being proselytized to have a right to expect civility and grace from those attempting to convert them, Christians have a right to share their beliefs and carry out the Great Commission. Whining about how they should live and let live without trying to convert anyone actively is basically saying they should stand as onlooking bystanders while literal billions of people hurtle towards an eternity of suffering. I get that you're probably some teenager going through a phase. Believe me, I was an edgy atheist when I was in high school too. But R/atheism is every bit the circlejerk of insufferable assholes you seem to think the religious are. Maybe follow your advice and don't be such a dick about telling your side.

Religion is an interesting subject, raised Christian/Catholic, but more in tune with Christianity. The thing from the Bible that people tend to miss, is that it's stories to guide your own life, but people tend to scratch the surface, that it's a book full of contractions. But the problem more is on people, because we tend to be contradictive from what we say and do, that we tend to self project our own answers. For instance, like you mentioned of people telling you, you're going to hell, the one's to know that is you and God, but because you're not sure on the answer, you feel guilty because of them. It's similar to when people have signs of saying 'god hate the gays', it's stupid, not true, but people use a higher authority that you can't see or question personally, that caused many to be skeptics. Think about it with these core principals, follow the 10 commandments, pray for forgiveness when you have sinned and repent, and we are all God's children. Doesn't sound to bad, but even Jesus flipped a table for defiling God's home. I just find it troublesome when people want answers already, and end up getting removed from the experience to learn from and tell other people answers they want to hear and it becomes misinformation. Plus those that believe if their friends and family, who aren't in the same religion as them, won't be saved, so recruit more people
@ChaoticIntention3 жыл бұрын
@Beef Feet I love it when people's go-to is "it's a book full of contradictions" funny thing about that, is that it isn't one person's experience. It's multiple lives, that face hardship and have their own sins or dilemma, which they turn to God or God looks to them to answer. Put context what you mean "if a man sleep with a man" is wrong, because sodomy is wrong and even then you're holding today's standards to a past, which even then had different cultures during that time. Personally, I'd think there are people that misinterpret the bible and tell people "God hate the gays", which is stupid for numerous reasons, at the same time, everyone can get and read the bible, but prefers other people to interpret for them. Even if I wasn't religious, you're telling me God supposedly wrote the bible, then I'd question how, if he doesn't hold a physical form here. Then you're telling me, somewhere in the the bible, that if a man sleeps with another man it's wrong...what do think the age would be for a child to become a man? Because people tend to dismiss that, in which case I don't believe the past holds today's standards on pedo shit, though that's my opinion, but IF it is the case, people don't consider much what the bible contributed than just negativity

Sad that this so called enlightenment can't solve basic stuff like poverty, inequality, diseases and death. In our brief history, humans only manage to slaughter and slave each other endlessly, polluted and destroyed the planet. But I bet it's all the Bible's fault, right?

@@Empress_Theresa It's not all the bible's fault. Just quite a huge amount of atrocities. But not everything.

I love end of the world nonsense. It’s so fun watching these lunatics being proved wrong. World isn’t ending anytime soon and no one knows when it’s going to happen. Not even a fictional character in a book

For reference there are good "non-demoniniational" churches but many and I mean many are bad. The difference is a couple of things, 1 fire and brimstone is not a description of hell from the bible, hell is the separation from God and his works. 2 I would stray away from topical teaching (reading a bunch of verses about a specific idea) and I would focus on verse by verse teaching like reading a few verses from a specific section and breaking down the ideas concepts and history of the passage. (I'm doing bible college and I consider myself to be a Christian)

I hear how much you've been scarred by religion that people try to thrust upon you just keep this in mind God is Not religion God is a relationship just as you and Nikki are in a relationship people are meant to be in a relationship with God which means talking to him as you would your spouse or a family member and love your neighbor as you would yourself neighbor in this context meaning anyone and everyone you see even the people that make it hard to love them
