Nickelodeon picks up a Canadian show about young prodigies in the fields of music, sports and teddy bear collecting, starring Chris Makepeace and Keanu Reeves. But more than that, we explore 1983, where a LOT of things happened to Nickelodeon in-directly. How did Ronald Reagan, Mickey Mouse and Atari effect the channel? Let's find out!

Deregulating what broadcasting could do is what led to the rise of what we saw television evolve from the 1980's onward. We still feel it today with the way media has saturated in our lives.

Also Nickelodeon 1983: We REFUSE to stoop so low as to make programming that's there to sell toys to an impressionable demographic of young children. Modern Nickelodeon: Today on Paw Patrol, the puppies get a new transforming robot and turn into superheroes to save that stupid chicken from being stuck in a tree. Now available ONLY at Wal*Mart!

Activision started as a 3rd party developer for Atari who would later gain the rights to publish Nickelodeon games after THQ went under. Keanu started his career on a Nickelodeon show and now he is in Sponge on The Run. It all comes full circle.

Disney did pick up some foreign programs/movies during the 80's that included some unique exposure to some unheardof features like the animated Asterix movies from France or the Japanese Unico movies. Several British and Canadian programs like Danger Bay, The Edison Twins, The Raccoons and a stop motion version of The Wind In The Willows were also seen on there.

Also, on another note: Epcot Center was not the only Disney Channel program for feature one of the hosts of Columbus/America Goes Bananaz. Randy Hamilton would also host Videopolis from 1987. A late 80s music variety show The Disney Channel aired cashing in on the MTV craze, with a mix of American Bandstand. They had other MTV generation shows like that too, such as DTV and Kids Incorporated.

God, I remember so much about this time period. I was fortunate enough to have parents well off enough to spring for the Disney channel. While I can see the point made here about how Disney was 90% reruns, honestly in 1983 the ability to get Disney content all day every day was consequential. If you could afford it. I was seven years old when Disney came out and we were an early subscriber. I'd stay up late nights watching Disney cartoons because you just couldn't get them anywhere else. They were special. That said, I can see now that I was in a pretty unique circumstance and had the good fortune to not have to worry about paying the cable bill every month. At the same time, in the early 1980s you kinda had street cred if your parents subscribed to the Disney Channel. Reruns or no, their properties were worth something back then too.

Even though "Saturday Morning" technically wouldn't apply for He-man as it was a weekday show (Monday to Friday) that mostly ran on any station that would pick it up, but is often put into that category if only out of viewing TV animation overall during that period. 65 episodes was a standard package for stations to show for 13 weeks, repeat four times a year. Most cartoons on Saturday morning only ran for 13 episodes a season, and were repeated four times a year.

Also a couple of things I found in some quick research... Going Great was produced by Canadian filmmaker Michael Maclear, and Nickelodeon ordered 39 episodes of Going Great from the CBC after only 13 had been produced. Geraldine Laybourne was apparently so impressed with those 13, she ordered 26 additional shows sight unseen.

I grew up in Canada in the 1970’s and 1980’s and watched “Growing Great” (1982-3) and “Spread Your Wings” (1975-1982) on the CBC regularly. Canada had excellent publicly funded television back then at the CBC and TVOntario so I’m not surprised Nickelodeon picked up on some of these shows. Things started to change 1984/5 when deregulation started to take place.

Another excellent video! This one is interesting for a few personal reasons: 1. I’ve always been fond of action animation, so I have a hard time feeling respect for Peggy Charren & her sort. They’re the reason 90% of 70s animation was Scooby clones - they read any & all conflict as “violence”, so that was the only formula they liked. And even then they thought it was too “intense”. Say what you will about the 80s toy cartoons, but they definitely paved the way for the action animation renaissance of the 90s by reminding viewers that the genre was good despite what the worrywarts said. At least Charren had enough decency to challenge bad racist & sexist stereotypes in animation, since sadly a lot of people who followed her example thought those were okay. 2. Like others have said, the Disney Channel putting itself behind a paywall is probably why they don’t have the attachment to the Disney library that older generations who watched Wonderful World of Color did. I know that I didn’t warm up to Disney until I got waaaay into animation history in high school. But my parents taped one of the preview weekends, which is how I saw my first Disney animated movie, Robin Hood, so I had a bit of nostalgia for it. 3. Geraldine Layborne may be the only case I’ve ever encountered of focus groups being used for good. Can’t wait for the next video, if only to reevaluate something I didn’t enjoy as a kid.

Woo 2 nick knacks in one week! I think these barely forgotten oddities in a lot of ways can be as fascinating as the few well remembered programs from this era. Who knew Keanu always talked like Ted Logan? This show in a lot of ways i always assumed was symptomatic of the failure of this era, largely for the reasons Gerry Layborne highlighted, but in reality it was just an oddball Canadian import replacing superior predecessors. I don’t think it was ever designed to be a tentpole program to build a lineup around. The larger 1983 context really does reframe a lot of preconceived notions I had about the pre orange splat era (that I admittedly don’t really remember). I was a very young tyke in this era but I vividly remember the rise of toy show marketing. It helped in the early cable era that there were all of a sudden 30+ channels trying to fill 24 hours of content, and you had cheap pre-produced programs to slot into programming blocks between 7-9am and 4-6 pm when you kids were watching television. My family never had the Disney channel till it moved to regular cable (but my cousins had a satellite and a descrambler back when that was a thing). Finally, it’s fascinating to see Atari’s failure be the market force that steered Nickelodeon into a more market friendly direction (and eventual sale to Viacom), as it was Atari’s complete and utter lack of quality control that was largely responsible for the video game crash that largely only affected the North American market (European computers remained strong and that little Japanese company launched the famicom/eventual NES in 1983). The larger context suggests that the failure of the Sy Schneider era can’t be judged out of the media environment it existed in. Maybe something like going great or vegetable soup or against the odds could have done better if there weren’t cheaper, garbage, marketing commercials to sell toys for kids to watch. I personally think the early success of the Layborne/orange splat era had less to do with any particularly brilliant programming changes, than the absolute brilliance of the doo-wop bumpers/station breaks/top of the hour intros (but that will likely be a video 4-5 episodes from now). Sorry to keep leaving such megacomments, this is easily one of the best documentary series on the entire internet. Keep up the fantastic work!

It just goes to shows that sometimes things beyond Nick's or Warner's control changed the course of history of Warner's cable division at the time. Although had everything worked out with Atari and had Disney Channel completely failed and not somewhat succeed Warner could had still owned Nickelodeon and the other channels it owned at the time to this day.

If you think Going Great's Wikipedia page is sad you should look at Kids & Teens TV (KTV). The cable/satellite channel existed along with its sister stations Angel One and Angel Two for 20 years, yet it only has three short paragraphs. Most of which are about its last few years of existance. It is also hard to find a high quality the old logo for the channel.

Also, with all of the factors included, don't forget: each year in the early 80s, more and more areas are wired for cable. (Each city's government made that decision, along with who'd do the labor and their choice for the franchise agreement) More HOMES are signing up for cable, each with their own reasons for signing up...but if you didn't have cable until 1983 and then you signed up, all the programming was new to you! Looking back, competitively this bought Nickelodeon time to figure itself out.

Actually, Atari didn't go defunct in 1984, it was just sold off and continued making consoles, though none were successful, and they're still around today. Also, while the Atari Pac-Man and E.T. game were part of the video game crash, the bigger problem that caused it was 3rd party companies releasing games that were just as bad or worse than those 2 games that flooded the market. Also, I think in that dungeon scene on YCDTOT, the Pac-Man Atari game should've been used to torture the kid. Other than those points, the video was another great Nick Knacks video.

Also employee theft at Atari's production facilities was rife, people would just walk off with boxes of games and no-one batted an eyelid - it's no wonder the company was haemorrhaging money. The New Mexico landfill was most probably a dumping site for one of the closed facilities. As for ET, Warners made a huge gamble by essentially paying Spielberg whatever he wanted for the licence(because they really, really wanted him to make films for them), and it was a lot. It was already making a loss before it had even got to the shelves.

I've actually been thinking a bit about doing a Nick Knacks type show about The Disney Channel. But if I were to do it, I don't know if I would actually keep going at it like Nick Knacks would. Still, I have started looking a bit into The Disney Channel's history, and I think it would definitely be a worthwhile series to talk about alongside Nick Knacks. Not only would it bring a bit of context into the Disney Channel's history, but it would even shine a bit more light on the history of the Walt Disney company as a whole. Even leading into some interesting parts of Disney Channel's history, like what lead to them making live-action sitcoms. What were the specifics to their time as a paid TV company. There's also some rare, obscure stuff that nobody really knows about similar to what was talked about with Nick Knacks. There were documentary shows like New Animal World starring Bill Burrud (a revival of the 1968 NBC nature show), The Scheme of Things hosted by Mark Shaw (although, Disney Channel Magazine cited it as being hosted by Jame MacArthur. Not sure if he hosted in earlier episodes, or if the MacArthur run never saw the light of day). Also, there was not one but TWO SHOWS featuring the Epcot center. Epcot Magazine, which has about 5 minutes of footage available, and Epcot America America, a weekend program with no footage available minus some brief snippets of promo footage. There was also an unknown program called Eyes and Ears, which almost falls under about the same amount of obscurity as By The Way was before it's December 2018 uncovering. Maybe we'll see the same miracle happen with Eyes and Ears. Weather it be me or somebody else, if anybody were to ever do a Nick Knacks type retrospective show on The Disney Channel, the biggest piece of information that would be good to use are issues of The Disney Channel magazine. Disney was producing that magazine to Disney Channel subscribers from its channel's launch, and produced its last issue in 1997. This is the perfect way to get an understanding of The Disney Channel's overall environment during it's entire existence as a pay TV channel. The premiere issue from April 1983 is readily available in PDF form, and it pretty much has detailed information from all of the shows and movies that aired during Disney Channel's launch (and even shows that never saw the light of day, like Dreammakers). Any other early 80s issue of Disney Channel Magazine would need to be purchased off ebay. Some later 1983 issues of Disney Channel Magazine would have information about shows added to their schedule later on in 1983, such as Gumby, Donald Duck Presents, and Five Mile Creek, just to name a few. If anyone does a Disney Channel retrospective series, I highly implore you to use Disney Channel Magazine as one of the biggest resources of all.

another thing i want to add in regards to toy-based cartoons was that you can thank smurfs for starting the trend early on before deregulations kicked into place; when they were bringing the smurfs cartoon over here, the regulators were only familiar with it as a toy line and nearly denied it. however, the creators pointed out that it was based on a european comic originally, so that's how they let it go to air. when other people found out, they devised a loophole where they'd just commission a one-off comic before the series was set to air, and if asked they'd go "uh it's based off this comic" and get away with it. buzz dixon (gi joe/transformers writer) says this was how a ton of early 80s shows got past that rule.

I remember “Welcome to Pooh Corner” as a kid, and it was one of the first original series aired on the Disney Channel since the beginning of its existence. It wasn’t that creepy, but it had costume characters or animatronics. “Dumbo’s Circus” was another example of being a show that had a creepy factor to it.

I don't know why, but I always thought GG was a Nick original and Mr. Wizard was a pre-existing import. Funny to have gotten it backward. It's funny how much stuff my brain insists was launched this year that either started earlier (Against the Odds) or later, in some cases not til 85. I think I just mentally squeezed everything that launched after we got cable but before we moved in summer 85 into my first grade year.

LOL, do I feel old. I was ON a segment of this show! My 8th Grade Class was going on a trip to an One Room Schoolhouse. A few days before the trip, we got told we had to try really hard to dress like “olden times”. (It was the 80’s, so frills & stuff wasn’t much of a problem, lol) A CBC Camera crew was coming to film us for the day. Sadly, my crush Chris Makepeace (Rudy the Rabbit) wasn’t there in person. My big line on camera was that the old timey teacher “made you feel like you were in the army or something...”

Ah, good old expensive Disney Channel. I remember when I was a kid, I'd see those "call now and subscribe" commercials, then for a while we DID have the channel and it was glorious. Then we got rid of our old cable box and that was it.

I think you're burying the lede a bit with He-Man: its success was so massive because Filmation was forced to move into syndication because the networks wanted nothing to do with them anymore. That was the catalyst of He-Man's success, and was something already in motion when in premiered on September 26th, two weeks after the Saturday morning season had started, and also after Sunbow had rushed out the first G.I. Joe miniseries into syndication on the week of the 12th, and a full two years after The Smurfs got on the air as a vehicle to sell the plastic figurines (that they were based on a series of comic books just so happened to make it easier for NBC to allow the show on its network). It is always funny, though, to see Peggy Charren upset about He-Man when she thought the world of Filmation and Lou Scheimer since they were effectively her strongest supporter in the broadcast landscape before and even after He-Man hit the air, and the show definitely reflects that philosophy in content (mainly because Filmation retained full creative control and were free to veto Mattel's toys-which they exercised frequently).

I love these videos, and I know this isn't really what you are trying to cover in detail here. But the whole narative of those two games "sinking atari" and destroying home video gaming in the US is very much over simplifying things, there were many other things going on that led up to the whole "crash".

Some Miscellaneous advice: Animat/ElectroDragon Productions has a pretty robust Cartoon Network and Hanna Barbara Retrospectives (which probably covers most of the channel’s output besides some miscellaneous licensed anime and the DC Animated Universe) so Disney Channel would be the more interesting one to watch and has more of an audience right now IMO, Just something to consider if your looking into it and feel equally passionate about both. Just make sure you get a grasp on editing and research before you start as well as get a feel about the narrative/message you wanna construct in each episode (for example Poparena made the “What Will They Think Of Next?” episode about what exactly Schneider didn’t get about children of the time period). Also good audio is A MUST. The KZbin Audience is critical of that.

Research is in the bag for me. I really enjoy researching trivia about film and TV. The only problem is how much work goes into it. I need to gather up a lot of information on the subject and then when creating a structure it can be difficult to do with the information I get. I’ve had some experience with making videos in the past so editing isn’t a problem. I’m well aware of Mr. Brunet and his work. I have seen his lookbacks on Hanna Barbera and Cartoon Network. They are good videos on the history of the companies. There are some problems though. Brunet is very selective on what he talks about and he doesn’t talk about everything they did. If I did Cartoon Network I’d probably talk about everything from Turner’s acquisition of MGM to the modern day and try to cover everything. Brunet also kind of picks the most popular stuff that the companies have done. I would talk about everything in my series and try to get as much research as I can. Also I don’t want to sound cocky or anything but Brunet doesn’t own the concept of these history of videos. Anyone can do it and someone should try to do what he’s doing by now. (And if he thinks we’re stealing his stuff because it’s similar to his stuff that’s not fair.) I mainly would want to do this because I love both companies and what they do. It seems appropriate that they deserve a show like this. Also I’m highly interested in their history and see what will be unveiled.

I'm not sure I'd classify Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a toy-based cartoon--it started out as a rather more adult (or at least young-adult) comic book, not as a toy line.
@seancdaug
@seancdaug 5 жыл бұрын
The only reason that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was made into a cartoon was because Playmates Toys wouldn't sign the licensing deal without one. They didn't want to take on the risk of trying to market a series of toys where the only cross-merchandising synergy was with an indie comic book. The cartoon was developed with representatives from Playmates from day one. Playmates almost certainly had more influence over the creative direction of the show than Eastman and Laird did.

not familliar with going great so I don't have a lot to add to that discussion, but the remainder of the episode.... yeah I had heard that's how the whole 80s boom got its start was after the deregulation (or I suppose 'unregulation' is how he put it) and then everything just came after... oh and yeah the whole video games thing!! definitely looking like '83 was the year most of the stuff I remember seeing started to show up!

Huh...I never thought politics would actually contribute to Nickelodeon’s growth. I always try to stay away from it and not touch it with a 100 foot pole for multiple reasons- mainly because it’s almost always a complete mess. So ‘83 is when Warner began to work with the now infamous Viacom. I can only imagine this partnership going further down the line.
