Lip balm doesn't contain any addictive substances. Using it excessively doesn't cause the lips and surrounding area to stop producing natural moisture. At the most, you may be hyperaware of your bare lips, much like you'd be aware of how naked you are if you stopped wearing clothes.

It's probably not all chap stick that is addictive, but I've noticed a difference between plain old Vaseline (which I've found to be the only stuff that doesn't make my lips feel dried out) and Vaseline in tiny containers made for lips. The stuff "for lips" doesn't work as well and dries out much faster than regular Vaseline. Because of this anecdotal evidence I believe that chapsticks are made to be addictive haha

Heh Rachel! The only thing I have found which works for my chapped lips is Aquaphore healing gel but in the tube form NOT the small chapstick looking bottle but the one that you can squeeze out. it’s the best!

Right now the weather makes having not chapped lips (even here in SoCal) really hard. Usually, I only use a lip balm or chap stick at night and have no issues. So my advice is put some on _right_ before you go to sleep. It might be a few days of not great lips, but it "evens out".

I used to use Burt’s Bees chapstick constantly until it started giving me contact dermatitis, which I found out was from beeswax. Which really limits my options! I’ve tried several different options, but my favorites are Vaseline and lanolin. I use lanolin more often though because it doesn’t feel as heavy on the lips. Also my lips used to get dry so easily but now I only use lip balm (usually lanolin) once or twice a day, if that.

A small dog, I think it's a Chihuahua, showed up at my brother's a little over a week ago without tags and she's not chipped. So some lip balms do contain certain ingredients that will dry out you lips more/faster such as camphor, menthol, phenol, fragrances, eucalyptus, flavorings, etc. Aquaphor works great at restoring moisture if your lips are already dried and chapped and plain Vaseline can work well on your lips if they aren’t already dried out.

I use Chapstick moisturizer lip balm. I have for years. I put it on a night before I go to sleep and occasionally during the day if I am going out into the cold. It is not addicting. The person/people who told you that it is addicting are projecting their issues onto you.

For the past almost 2 years, my lips were cracking so bad. In my research, I learned that you’re not supposed to put Vaseline on dry lips. You’re supposed to moisturize and put Vaseline on top to seal in the moisture. Aquaphor was highly recommended, but it dried my lips out more. I’ve had the best luck with EOS brand lip balm.

The whole thing with chapstick is that it's supposed to help protect your lips. But people tend to overuse it all the time. So your lips get over moisturized with chemicals, which then makes your actual skin stop hydrating itself. It's fine to use every once in a while when really needed.

My daughter is 18 and has never used any form of chapstick or lipstick in her life and her lips look soft and they are never chapped. But those are lips that never had something on them in the first place
