The scariest & most daring ride in all of Coney Island's history is actually still there, but defunct. And that is none other than the infamous Steeplechase (former park that existed there) "PARACHUTE JUMP" ... it was NOT like the kind you find at 6 Flags or etc that use a controlled (elevator like) descent, it was the REAL deal! When you took a ride up on the parachute jump, you were parachuting in real time on the way down. Meaning the ride used REAL parachutes and were the only thing slowing your decent safely back to Earth. When the release mechanism was triggered at the top, it instantly let you go, free falling, until the parachute fully opens and begins to slow your descent! That parachute was the only thing keeping you from certain death, as there was no other safety mechanism in place. The landing was also intense as there were poles in place to arrest the falling chute, causing you to bounce repeatedly to a safe stop. It was an adrenaline pumping free falling experience that way ahead of its time as far as amusements go. You can find old videos of it in action here on KZbin.
