Why do you think that? I make "good" money and am struggling despite having given up alot. These kids can't double their pay and not afford an apartment. The $1000 a year on a trip is not the issue. The $2500 rent, $300 car insurance, $20K used cars, etc. 30% total tax rates on medium or low incomes, are multiple times bigger

@@istvanpraha if you don’t have debt to begin with you won’t have to worry about paying debt down or going on vacation. You will never convince me that teaching people at any age about financial literacy is a negative. People should start financial planning as soon as possible. The earlier the better so they make informed financial choices. I think most people have made financial decisions that weren’t the best like taking on too much credit card debt or student loan debt and not understanding the repercussions. People forget they can create a sinking funds to save for yearly vacations. I save for summer vacation and one for the Christmas holiday season. Also people who are savvy use their credits cards to pay their monthly bills, then use their pay checks to pay the credit card balance in full by their next due date which earn them points they later use to pay for vacation expenses.

@@michaellightbown9492 people can go out to eat without leaving a tip, not everyone needs to leave a tip...servers are not entitled to people's tips..especially those who don't even put effort into it but still expect to be tipped... the restaurants should be paying people more not the customers. Edit: YT won't let me respond to this response apparently so I guess I just have to write it here....but this silly mentality of calling people "broke" just because they want to be smart, sensible and frugal with how they spend their hard earned money is ridiculous...so what you think only rich people can go out to dinner? Apparently "broke" people or what you call average earning people are not allowed to go out to dinner according to you even if they have the money to pay for the actual meal itself. That's ridiculous. Calling people broke to try to manipulate them to spend their own hard earned money the way you want them to is a delusional level of gross entitlement. I can understand the original commenter because they are encouraging people to not go on vacation while broke so that they can save up....but you are talking about people giving something extra like tips they don't need to give and saying that they should stay at home if they can't? That's ridiculous.....Again, people will give tips to servers who deserve it and if they want to, it's not written in law that people must tip and there's nothing wrong if a person chooses not to tip. The onus is larger on the restaurant for them to pay their workers more than it is for the customer to be paying what should be covered in salary through tips.

What these people don’t understand is that you’re not guaranteed old age and retirement. There are plenty of young people, living with chronic and debilitating ailments that prevent them from living their life to the fullest as a healthy young person would. No one is saying to work needlessly and endlessly until retirement, with no vacation and time off but that you could get into a major accident or become very sick at 32 and you’ll have wished you had a little bit of spare money in your piggy bank. It’s not only about assuming you’ll get to retire, but about assuming you’ll be fit enough to do it in the first place. Also, also: we need to normalize just going out of town to somewhere close by yet unexplored to be considered “travel“. You’d be surprised what you’d find just going to the next county over.

I paid off credit cards, my car, medical debt, etc and went on a two week cruise to Asia, my friend’s wedding in the Dominican Republic and a cruise to the southern Caribbean. I have a balance of saving and paying debt at the same time. I have a line item in my budget called Travel and I allocate money monthly to it and let it build overtime. I want to live my life and have fun within reason. My last debt is my student loan and I’m throwing money at it while saving.

It's easy to say now that you've made it and can do it. I'm also pushing 40 (39) and don't regret traveling the world in my 20's. I got to experience the world with my best friends, all of whom couldn't travel the same way now because of kids and their jobs. For me, experiences are only as good as the people you're with, so I don't really care to travel alone or travel with the same person (my spouse) over and over. My energy has changed too, and I did things I'd never do at my age but am so glad I got the experience because there's no way I'd do it now lol. Only saying that because everyone is different and will be moved to live their lives differently. I see it both ways though. Fear you might not live to 40 or might not have the opportunity due to work/kids/etc...but also the fear that you may regret spending money on a life experience, or the fear that you'll never be able to get out of debt. Both are valid feelings, just different. All that to say, enjoy your freedom and have a blast exploring! I'm sure it feels amazing!!

Travel is the only thing that makes me want to not self delete. If i didn’t travel, i would honestly just self delete. I don’t enjoy any other aspect of life at all, don’t have family or friends and my career is in the toilet, so no regrets on my two trips that I’ve taken. They were the only weeks of my life that ever had any meaning or happiness. I’d rather die than not be able to travel, i already can only do it every 2 years or so. And i also took out a payday loan that i knew i couldn’t pay back to see phantom of the opera before they left New York and that was a lifelong bucket list item and i sat under the chandelier… i know I’ll never be able to pay that loan back. But no regrets. It was one of the best days of my life and most of life feels like it’s not worth living. If you find any happiness, enjoy it. Life sucks and then you die.

What you get paid and what is in your bank account is a very complicated equation. A lot of people don’t get paid very well yes. A lot of people also make terrible decisions and it doesn’t matter what they get paid because they will spend it all no matter how much it is. How much you get paid is also extremely complicated as money people do not put in enough effort into the job search and settle on something low effort and low pay. I’m not a guru I’m not saying if you don’t make 100kba year you’re an idiot. But if you don’t make 50 your either A not searching for jobs enough B not someone who can be trusted with holding down an actually valuable postion C live in a horrible job market and may need to move or D You are doing everybting right and just haven’t found it yet. They are out there tho and if you are worth your weight as a worker and continue to diligently pursue new opportunity’s you will find something that pays you a decent wage. If you have a chaotic schedule you expect your employer to work around this is also probably gonna exempt you from most higher paying jobs and relegate you to the low wage shift based type jobs. Not trying to hammer you just trying to offer up an alternative perspective. Btw if you can’t save money off 50k a year you are the problem

That being said, that’s why I haven’t been on a trip of any type in over 12 years - it’s always something - “I just moved, let me get settled in first” “just started a new job, let me take care of bills and pay down debt some before making any plans,” and then there was the pandemic…. At this point, I’m not sure if I would fully finance an _entire_ vacation, HOWEVER if I had a card with a large enough limit and wasn’t currently unemployed (again🙄) in this job market and this economic crisis, I would definitely be ever so slightly more inclined to at least consider it more seriously. Traveling is alot easier if your European and on a budget, I can go on a two night trip to anywhere in West Europe for under £150 Ive been on many trips where I've been in debt, and I will continue to go on trips when in debt as I need to live my life. There does have to be a balance though, I want to go to Singapore but I wouldn't go whilst in debt, because it's too much to pay off, £150 is something I can pay back if I shrimp and save.

When my older 3 were smaller, we went on a big, expensive trip. 5 of us went to see my family in England (that part was cheap, staying with family and home cooked meals), France (an expensive week in Paris but also a cheap trip to visit friends we stayed with on the south coast for a few days), and Greece (definitely qualified as expensive). We mostly paid cash but used home equity line of credit to help. Never regretted and so grateful we did that. Our third child died of cancer not long after during covid lockdowns. It added to our most wonderful memories with him and I see that as an investment we made in him and how much we valued him and his short childhood. There weren't any children's wish foundation trips during covid. There weren't any opportunities to take him too far from the hospital and nothing open in the cities. We didn't know he was going to get sick and die at 12 years old. I am so thankful to have pictures of him having the time of his life on a speedboat in the Mediterranean and video of him dancing in the Natural History Museum and snorkling on a beach in Greece and hiking in the Black Forest. Most of the time we've managed to stay in budget. Sometimes we've taken on a little debt for our kids and it's taken a couple of months to catch up. We have 1 yo twins and we're financially stronger than we were in 2018. We're planning another big trip next year and we've set a lot of money aside for it and hoping our college age kids will be able to join us. But I'll stand by young parents taking some chances to make memories with your kids. You don't know if gun violence, car accidents or cancer are going to rob you of your kids and those experiences are priceless.

When I was in my 20s, being middle aged seem so far away. But now I'm a few years from my 40s and I am sooo glad I didn't get into debt. (I still traveled, but I didn't go into debt for it.) 24 year old me had no idea that burnout was real and could cause physical symptoms 10 years down the line. 🙃 Being financially secure has saved me from being in a dark place.

Yes this is one thing I agree with. I'm 39 and had burnout (severe...it was a factor in causing my pulmonary emboli too that almost killed me) but I was able to quit my career and take time off to figure out what I wanted to do. I'm back in school and never felt more excited or hopeful! At the same time, I did travel the world in my 20's and early 30's, but I did it as affordably as possible. I think that's the difference. I didn't buy anything at home (never got take out, delivery, nails done, full priced clothes, etc...) until I could afford it. But yes...I wish I could tell everyone about burnout and how horrific it is. It's not what you think it is, and unless you've experienced it, it sounds like it's something "made up" by people who are too lazy to work or people who can't handle the heat. On the contrary, it's almost always the hardest, best, and most valued workers who get burn out. Even if they love their jobs, or used to love their jobs. I worked more than anyone I know, (had people telling me all along I work too much but I ignored them), and now I can see it SO clearly. For many reason, I shouldn't be here today. My body almost killed me, but beyond that, I got to such a dark place, it's almost too terrifying to look back on now as I'm typing this. It's all still so fresh for me. Please, anyone reading this, if you feel burnt out, stop whatever you're doing right now, or at least come up with a plan right now to get yourself out of whatever job is giving you burn out. It will only get worse, and it is a silent killer that we need to talk about more!

So not going this year is not a lost. All we know is next year is going to amazing for my family. No debt besides regular bills etc. We will be able to save more and enjoy our money again. Cost of living has gone up- and if people don’t adjust they will find themselves in serious trouble the next couple of years. The lady travelling with so much debt is crazy and it will catch up with her. Live in your means. I’m so grateful I got to travel so much with my family when we did. No one said that you have to wait until you are retired to travel, in this economic times there are people of retirement age who don't have any money as well and struggling....sooo what was your angle with that argument? What people are saying is that if you are ALREADY drowning in debt it does not make any sense to go on a trip around the world and put yourself into more debt plus on top of that putting it all on a credit card. How about you curb your expectations on "trips" and instead of blowing thousands of dollars on vacay try to go on vacation on the cheap or a budget trip UNTIL the time comes that you have enough money to go on that boogie vacation.

Health and physical fitness in your 40s, 50s, 60s is NOT guaranteed for MOST PEOPLE! This society is designed to keep you in debt FOREVER! There is no such thing as being perpetually debt free! Yeah, don't go 10k in debt for a single trip, but traveling while young/in debt is NOT A SIN! And also newsflash, most of the upper middle class/rich ARE TRAVELING ON CREDIT!!! Also, this mentality, that people need to cancel Netflix or "stop eating avocado toast" to save for traveling is BS! Most of the people saying that are already FINANCIALLY PRIVILEGED! Such an ancient mentality. This is 2024. Wake up and see the prison we're all living in and happily obliging. And before you assume I'm a broke ass b.i, I've been living alone since I was 17. Been working since I was 14. I was making 3 figures by 30, and now I'm pushing 40 and am able to start over and go back to school because I'm miserable in the corporate world and ready to live a modest life. I'm also ready to spend more time with family, and my only regret in life is that I never lived at home as an adult because my parents are amazing humans that I appreciate more and more the older I get. If I didn't live states away, I'd move into their house in a heartbeat. We don't appreciate or value family here in the U.S. But I've traveled the world (mostly developing nations) and honestly see how much better their lives are because they live surrounded by family. And here, we're brainwashed and bullied into thinking it's some sort of shameful thing to live with your family. It's really fcking sad.

People act like debt is the end of the world but it’s not. I’d rather die ice climbing in the Himalayas or die from a jellyfish sting in the ocean than die because I’m scared of debt.

try using your debit card for a vacation & let me know about those $200-$500 holds at gas stations & hotels oh & how your card got skimmed & your bank froze your account & now you're stuck in the middle of who knows where with no $ & no branches near you either. ALWAYS USE A CREDIT CARD!!! Grown adults have hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt, but they are not going to pay off their house & student loans & cars before going on a $3k vaycay, & aren't dumb enough to use their personal debit card linked to their primary bank acct & swipe it everywhere & hand it to strangers & do that all over different areas/regions.
