Brings back so many memories... did that numerous times in my fishing boat, and before with my parents... I’ve been over on the old car, too, the one that’s now retired, but never been removed. I think it’s still operational. My parents had a cottage on T-Lake just up the river from Big Chute, before it narrows at the island. Look up James Angus’s books about the Trent-Severn, they’re great. He grew up in Big Chute. Also has one on the Georgian Bay Lumber company.

I think it also keeps a lamprey eel problem from spreading since eels that latch onto the hulls just fall off onto the ground shortly after the boat being hauled out of the water.

A boat trip through the Trent Severn Waterway from lake Ontario is amazing. You can go through a series of rivers, lakes, canals and locks all the way to Georgian Bay, if you so choose. I've been through the Peterborough Lift Locks (check them out...awesome) and Big Chute. We took three weeks and loved it.

Lot cheaper than cutting out a canal from one water way to another. But on the other hand, a bridge would have to be built for the roadway if a canal were built. Here in New York State canal system, a series of locks are used to go from higher to lower, (or vice versa), levels of land that the canal traverses from one end of the state to the other end. It's free. How much did you have to pay to "ship" your boat over the land?

+jagsoftStudios Not sure what a Canal Boat looks like but I don't see why not. All kinds of watercraft use it. It will handle Boats up to 100 Feet Long and a 24 Foot Beam. The vertical Lift is 58' and the Horizontal Travel is 100;.

Canna boats would be welcome (anything that can fit in is welcome) but you just do NOT see traditional UK Style Canal Boats in Canada, the locks here are HUGE in comparison ... the smallest Lift lock in this particular system is 84' long and 23' wide (25.4m X 7.0m) ... Even the Marine Railway in this video lift can take ships up to 100 tons in weight.

Depending on seasonal water levels it's about a 60 foot (18 m) lift ... The Big Chute Marine Railway is the only marine railway (or canal inclined plane) of its kind in North America still in use, there's actually second antique manual operated one right beside it That is was used on occasion until 2003 (when the big one was out of service for emergency repairs or breakdown) ...it's was also a sight to see.

@MikeBaxterABC6 жыл бұрын
Two other marine railway lifts were replaced by tradition Locks on this system in the past ... but this site is considered a national historic site and will never be changed .. the other thing is there was plan in 1964 to dig it out and put a regular lock ... but Sea lamprey live in the bottom side of the waterway and making a lock there would allow them ito the whole lake system (devastating sport fishery stocks) Occasionally to this day Sea Lamprey will attach themselves to the boats .. but they fall off a few seconds after going up the ramp in the dry air, eliminating any risk.. So finally in 1976 they built the new railway lift you see in this video, at the cost of only 3 million dollars ... the old manual operated railway still stayed in occasional use until 2003 but is decommissioned now (it's right beside the big one)

When you typed this it was about $5 per foot of boat lengths, lifts for a 20 footer would be $30 ... but that's for 6 days of unlimited lockages (there's a total of 44 locks and it's almost 400 KM long) .. there's a flat rate unlimited full season pass that's only $8 per boat length foot ... BUT in the 2017 season ALL lockages are 100% free to celebrate Canada's 150 year Anniversary ...

Cool video, and only boring to someone who doesn't have the mental capacity to understand the engineering involved here.

Don Z I admit I don't understand the engineering involved, I do however, enjoy watching! It would be awesome to see a video of this from the water to the front of this contraption as the boats proceed to the water.

Why do you have to lie, this is Canada not U.K. Liked the video despite the "Clickbait Title".

This is no lie sir ... the waterway is officially called the "Trent-Severn Waterway" .... You'll find many of these styles of names duplicated in Canada ... blame out fore fathers for having no imagination! :)

There are some retards here..... There is in Poland similar transportation for boats. If you thought it was boring, why would you post the video to youtube? My guess is that was a poor choice of a wording. Maybe saying "Progress is incredibly slow" or ""This is much cooler than watching the grass grow" or something like that would be more appropriate if you ask me. But I'm thinking the guy was trying to distract us from what he was really doing. At about 01:05 I hear a zipper. Perhaps he was getting ready to expose himself? Just kidding of course :-) It actually sounds like the zipper to a camera case or something like that. I'm sorry if anybody thought that was in bad taste. Shame on me!

So, why would you A. search for this and B. sit back and complain about it knowing this could have been the outcome, in your small world.. Idiots like you amaze me.
