It was such a pleasure to meet Steven back in 2018. He was so kind, down-to-earth and I loved his charisma. He's a truly inspiring person. I believe he might be somewhat frustrated with the persistent focus on his Trevor role in GTA, because he dedicated a significant part of himself to that character, and while people love Trevor, they may not fully grasp who the real Steven Ogg is beyond that role. Thanks for the podcast!

I'm sure he wants to move on and be known for more but it doesn't help that he played Trevor, maybe if he played a character like Michael etc and wasn't being asked to say terrible things to people all the time, he wouldn't be as annoyed by it.

GTA V is the 2nd highest selling video game of all time, it's sold nearly 200 million copies, which is almost inconceivable, and Trevor is by far the most iconic character from that game. Many, many people have spent hundreds of hours playing it. He will always be thought of as Trevor, it's unavoidable, unless maybe in the future he lands some huge lead role in a blockbuster movie that ends up being uber successful. I think he's uncomfortable with it because he is not a gamer himself, and doesn't take video games very seriously. GTA V was a brilliant piece of social satire. He should be proud of what he helped to accomplish with that game. It was an astronomical hit, and for good reason.

I personally think they killed Trevor off too early in TWD. My God did he Master that role of Simon. It was Glorious. And the cameo in Better Call Saul was perfect as well. When are we gonna get more of Steven Ogg?? He is literally a perfect actor, with the best comedic presence & optics of anyone from this generation. Not because of the rage, but from the authenticity and passion, along with the ability to switch tempo so seamlessly. I wanna see a Steven Ogg Horror Movie, but not some trash; I wanna see the next Classic. That or maybe a show, where he's the protagonist; Bojack Horseman mixed with Trevor Phillips. Or even a serious show, like True Detective & Ogg really displays his acting chops & serious depth....

@@DocOrtmeyer I'm sure he could play a nice caracter. I often get the impression that actors are very talented in ways that are the opposite of their usual roles. For example, in France we're used to comedies. It's even very tiring, and sometimes some comedic actors break out of this framework to play more dramatic roles where they also perform well. A typical local actor, Jean Durand, can just as easily play an unfaithful husband in a comedy that denounces double standards on infidelity as he can play a mad killer lost in New Aquitaine in an absurd comedy that takes itself seriously. I'm also thinking of Jean-Paul Rouve, who can be found in some very tired comedies like the Les Tuches film series, while recently he played Gabriel Matzneff, a French paedophile writer who still exists and lives in impunity while he abused numerous young girls by playing on his aura as a famous author. So I think that actors in the comedy genre are often unsuspected dramatic actors. More generally, to return to my original point, actors excel where they are least expected.

@@Alcégairetrue. It's more on the actor to break away from that type cast situation though. Like Hugh Jackman was Wolverine so long that everyone was like yea that's Logan lol. But he took on completely different roles and even does stage performances. And for him I don't think he was trying to prove anything. He just loves it and pursues it.

I've finally reached my breaking point with Steven. There's one thing to not reduce yourself to one role but an hour of interview about your acting and not a single mention of thee biggest role in your career is crazy. 😭 I wouldn't have cared if he only spared 5 minutes, maybe 10 if he's feeling generous, on gta5 cause I was genuinely interested in his other stuff, but this was bizarre. He's destroying any little respect people who grew up with the game got left for him (as the younger ones simply had to be there for the gta5 craze back then and don't have the same bond now that the game is that old and the people from back then are now all people in their 20s to 30s) and that's a significantly bigger part than the underage fans are and it feels like he's deliberately doing it to decimate the gta fans, but I don't think it'll yield an outcome that he will like either. A lot of the fandom also were understanding of him for a long time and even till this day, but it's come to the point where it's been, not hard, but virtually *impossible* to defend or being understanding of him anymore after that cameo drama when he took that fans money and ranted at them condescendingly instead of just declining/refund the request that he ranted about not wanting to do. I still don't know what the hell he was thinking in that moment or how any of that was okay to him. It's only so much compassion one can have before it eventually turns into contempt and that's what is happening. I've always liked Steve as himself, despite liking to play as Trevor because he's entertaining, I simultaneously also didn't like Trevor that much because, well, he's a sociopath. So it was a nice contrast that the actor is a sweet heart and it made Trevor more bearable, likable, but Steven's starting to grate on my nerves with his attitude. It's gotten to the point even his former co-stars got agitated with his antics. We understand he's tired but this is beyond his control. If he really wants to erase such a big part of him like that, he'll also have to erase it from his portfolio all together and not advertise himself with it. You can't have it all. That youtuber knew not to mention GTA5 but both of them also knew that was what got him invited. People are flocking to his cameo because of gta5. He KNOWS that. He can't have it both ways and then be all woe me about it. He could make so much of it cause, he in his grown age (and I hate I'm going there but he's literally a grown ass adult acting like this) is not understanding that no matter how hard he fights it, or how much he repeats it and how much he lectures people about it: Trevor Phillips is the role he'll be remembered for till he dies. Unless, and that is highly unlikely given how his career is going and how he's trying to sever ties with the thing that keeps him relevant aka getting him roles cause unfortunately talent alone doesn't give you roles, he lands a gig that turns out to be even bigger than that and overshines even a "cartoon" that sold almost 200 MILLION copies. I'm still not sure he's realised the magnitude of this all because he can't identify with the platform and chooses to be ignorant towards it. If he doesn't play video games, fine, but he needs to recognise and respect them as just as valuable art form as for instance movies to move on anywhere as an artist. There's not one art form that is more important than the other. If he wants respect as an actor, he's got to respect other art forms as well and not sound like my art teacher who doesn't view graffiti as art. It's a very narrow, outdated and elitist way of looking at art. There's always that one project in any artists life that will define them, but it's up to them what to make of it and that will determine whether they'll also develop beyond. People loved him BECAUSE he was so damn good at his role, not just because he was Trevor but because he's a good ACTOR. It was a breath of fresh air to have more good acting in video games and have characters feel alive. That's something that wasn't the norm, but rather occasional in video games cause the most important part until recently (and I mean like a decade and then some ago) was the gameplay, now more people, with the better graphics, also want better stories. Unfortunately at the cost of good gameplay but that's a different topic. He could build on his gta5 popularity especially with the next game coming and cultivate a bigger career from that while simultaneously, begrudgingly, now and then throwing some bone to the huge fanbase of his biggest project up to date. It's something he'll just have to make peace with to get on in his career. Being spiteful towards your past work (obviously this doesn't include actors who were abused by their employer) doesn't make you look good or attractive to future employers. Cause him being tied to Trevor won't ever change even if he eventually manages to make fans hate him, there'll always be people associating him with Trevor. He's got to work out his feelings about this already, it's been 10 years and I feel like the way he feels about fans, he himself also didn't move on since then. It's a shame, also that he never took accountability for what he did to that fan which is what basically kickstarted even the most die hard fans dislike of him. And this interview came out two months AFTER the fact (pretty sure the material didn't sit long aka wasn't recorded before), I've tried to look for anything of him ever making a statement afterwards and he's had plenty of time but never did till this day.

The problem that he has with the game is that people reference to him as Trevor, and he wants to be called Steven. It's a personal problem that some people have and some don't. Ned Luke and Solo have no problem regarding that because their love their character, Steven might not be feeling the same and it's what's he's most known for. It would be good for him, and for us as fans to see him ponder on this and hopefully he can come together with "Trevor". A fact is that he will lose popularity and will regret this when GTA 6 comes out. GTA V will be the legendary game, but Steven is missing the opportunity to use the popularity of Trevor to gain more audience for this work. Then again, we're just fans that love the game and Trevor character, regardless on how psycopath he is. We don't know the full story and he can feel this way, which is sad for us and that might be enraging for him. I kinda understand it, being called Trevor everytime some sees you instead of Steven, I see how that could be a pain in the ass.

@@BMS_ And yep, basically the unwritten part of my comment that I meant when I mentioned people also being understanding of him. Even if I'm annoyed, I still sympathise with him simultaneously to a degree. And by degree I mean he IS entitled to feel the way he does, but not once it crosses the threshold of bullying and screwing over someone for their money, that's where people draw the line. A fan asking for a cameo based on work he himself referenced is not at fault for the grief he feels towards a role that he is identified with and it's unfair to put that on them just like a lot of fans treatment is of him is, but he's taking it out at the wrong crowd.

Tends to be that way. Stallone = Rocky/Rambo. Sigorney = Ripley. And so on. Doesn't matter their IMDBs are chock-full of all kinds of other stuff. Mark Hamill same thing. You take on a gig that happens to leave a lasting cultural mark - and people associate you with that thing. I'd consider myself extremely literate in entertainment media - and the only other thing I've ever seen the guy play (other than Trevor Philips) - was a minor role on Westworld. And let's not forget GTA 5 generated $800 million in the first 24 hours after release. It was a huge cultural phenomenon. Look up the amount of view the GTA 6 trailer has gotten since dropping.

Probably is the dream of many actors to have a recognizable role - but then there's the problem of typecasting. Can be this guy doesn't get booked for a whole heck of a lot of things because of the role that made him, so to speak. Problem in this case is that his normal speaking voice is immediately identifiable as "that guy" from GTA 5. I can understand him and others in similar positions being fed up with the same questions over and over again - being asked to reenact lines from the same one thing - but that's simply how it is when you something you've done leaves a lasting impression. The Rock will never not be asked to do the eye brow raise. Not until he's dead and gone.
