I've never worked on a ship. THe best manager I ever had was on a little temp job that I picked up just to keep busy and earn a bit. He understood the idea of training your people well, and then getting out of the way and allowing them to do their job while still being there to support them if needed. Our international team was great (I joked that I was organizing the UN as we had so many nationalities). We surpassed our target, so everyone made their bonuses.

Excellent Vlog Lucy, Your telling of the history of your managers had me laughing out loud. I can assure you that many land based businesses suffer the same issue with poor management. i do understand that the problem is made that much more difficult when you are captive on a ship. Your expressions in telling your tale was priceless. i thoroughly enjoyed this video Thank you.

I had 3 different managers on one ship an Italian first who was so lovely as you say compared to the staff back at the academy. Two weeks later changed to an English manager, she was crazy but great fun, 4 months later a Manager from NZ and omg she was enough to put me off for life, so rude, nasty and clueless. Sounds like you had some serious mean girl politics though, crazy that your second manager was so young and inexperienced and clearly biased. Sounds like Danielle was pretty good, not having a manager coming out partying with you is so nice, gives you a chance to let your hair down without her. Loved watching this, thanks for sharing☺️

Cruising As Crew sounds like your second contract was way more plain sailing with managers. You’re definitely right, Steiner definitely need to analyse their managers before they allow them to train, often young, clueless power tripping girls go for it with no life experience, subbed to you😊

So interesting...this is the 1st time I've come across this KZbin channel. I've never worked on a ship, but I've been a passenger/guest many times. Reminds me of one time I won one of those "free" rock massages on the embarkment day, usually in the gym, giveaways. One thing you learn is the $$$ on the checks you win are only for the expensive high-end "signature" treatments...you know the ones you would never buy. But this one that actually my husband won and handed to me since they are not issued to specific people was basically a free hot rock massage. Made the appt. and when I came back for it, I noticed that the girl didn't have a nametag on (you will see why in a sec..everybody else I saw later always had a nametag...I think she took it off), and the place was deserted (manager was definitely gone)...as I remember, you could only cash it in on a port day or sometime they weren't busy. That was OK with me as I didn't care...anyway I should have. The girl made some snide comment that the free massage was given to my husband, and "of course" he gave it to me instead (apparently she liked the men). Asked me if I ever had one before, and mistake #1, I was honest with her and said I hadn't...at which time she mumbled that that would mean that I wouldn't know what to expect. I tried to ignore that. To summarize quickly, when she moved my arms and/or legs she complained about how "inflexible" I was. She put hot rocks on me and literally left for 1/2 hour. Came back, said to get dressed because I was done, and that I had to fill out a survey on how things went...I said I'd do it later in my cabin...she said that I was required to do it NOW before I left the room, obviously she knew what I would say. I thought the hell with it, and just put a neutral response on it. I thought of coming back and talking to the manager privately, but I didn't want to get harassed, as this girl was walking around the same ship I was. I didn't know who she was and wish I had brought my camera and took her pic to send to the cruise later to complain but I didn't think I'd need my cell phone for a massage! Anyway, I think I got one of the "mean girls" she was talking about...maybe she really wanted to go to port but I was preventing her from doing so. I've had various experiences in the spa no matter what ship we were on...what I've learned, just personally, is get a manicure and/or pedicure and that's about it...and you pay 3 times the "land" price. At the end of our cruising days, I even just got those done on land just before I left too. Yeah...I think I got one of the "mean girls". And yes, I always liked the managers that were all business and were firm but fair too!

Very interesting. I often wonder why companies tend to promote the meanest people to manager. But I'm really wondering what sales tips you learned from, was it Danielle? The one who could sell anything. For example, how did she manage to book a person who just came to check it out? Did she come across as pushy or what was her approach?

Everything you said is just very true. I had to disembark and break my contract only after a month.... The spa manager was a bully and in favor of only few girls, she didn't care of the rest of the team but only getting her target to get her salary..... I definitely don't recommend stainer to work for... It will be a hall of an experience...

I have watched about a dozen of your videos....it occurs to me that cruise lines executives have people reviewing all channels, sailors or crew, to learn how to improve their business. That being said, they are IDIOTs if they do not put you in a management or supervisory position to utilize your understanding and abilities for THEIR benefit. You are obviously capable of much more than what you are doing now!

Girl!!!! I was with Steiner for 4 contracts, loved it but you are just a number and they do not care. I've got an interview with Harding Retail tomorrow, I would stay with Steiner as I always smashed my retail and never got any bother from spa managers apart from when I used to waft, but they don't want to put me on the same ship as my fiance and the contracts compared to every other department. Hoping Harding Retail can offer me Carnival so I can link ID's again with fiance and we can do 6 month contracts together. Do you know how Harding Retail is about their contracts with people who have partners??
@CruisingAsCrew3 жыл бұрын
They will do there best to get you on the same ship but its unlikely. Especially after Covid!
@p.dubbbsssssss33683 жыл бұрын
@@CruisingAsCrew Possibly. I mean I have a £600 a week job in the U.K. atm but it’s for the love not the money 🤣 and I do generally miss ship life. My fiancé is security so it’s easier for me to get a job in a different department rather than them and they are aware of the situation and have been quite accommodating.

Just curious, but couldn't you go to HR and report that treatment as a hostile work environment? I know this was made 3 years ago, but I just found your channel and am seeing this, and curious. I know going to HR is intimidating in itself and you'd probably worry about retribution. I've been faced with that myself and didn't do it, and just quit.. I still regret that. It was in an on land job, though. Having a great manager makes all the difference, and I fully agree... I want someone I respect, vs popular and easy.

'Gayle' sounds a horrendous manager saying we dont want you in the photograph to a colleague after she took the group photo. Wow. I always found it better to be nice to everyone, you never know who's gonna be in the lifeboat when you are drowning. Lets hope Gayle, or any other horrible members of the ship's company, never find themself on a sinking ship. If they're not smart enough to work it out for themself, maybe somebody should have a polite word :-) .
