Thank you for sharing this pretty cool video... ...I grew up at the borough Marzahn, you filmed starting at 7:03 ... At these time it was a district full of grey towers and construction works... ...today, Marzahn and Hellersdorf are modern and green parts of Berlins City. But I also like remembering at these time... ...was a kind of special atmosphere :)

It brings back memories. I came to West Berlin in summer of 1988 as 9 year old kid, when everything was still going the old way. First impression was the Friedrichstrasse border crossing with cameras everywhere and armed to the teeth soldiers. Pretty creepy for a small kid.... Second thing was the great contrast when we finally reached West Berlin. It was like the other planet!

What you described is living proof that Communism is a hypocritical political system, due to it offering the bigwigs all sorts of special perks; which drives home that equality between the different socioeconomic groups is anything but.

I visited Berlin for 3-days in December of 1990. The wall was 100% gone and I had full access to what was once east Berlin. I paid a small fee and went to the top of the giant radio/TV tower in the east. My map of Berlin only had about 10% of the streets of the east. I quickly walked through the Brandenburg Gate, that was closed for major renovation. I had watched all the events of 1989 on the news, and I was very happy there was a peaceful ending of the Wall. My experience in Berlin was very favorable and I hope to go back some day.

I saw a video yesterday of the Stasi in DDR and one of the agents disclosed many of the ways they monitored the people both in the east and the west. He stated that the other countries use the same methods they used including monitoring the telephone calls in and out of the telco central offices. This was disclosed some years ago by an at&t worker in the US.
@dissdad87443 жыл бұрын
Classical method. Also they install monitoring equipment into all the main global internet hubs, such as the transatlantic telecommunications cable, to monitor the entire traffic.

Thanks for sharing this valuable record of that time. I was there too in the '90s. I guess so much have changed there in the city of Berlin today which is good, but I kind of miss old Berlin, both W & E. I don't know why.

samuel colt At the time I was recording only to send to my mother, a born Berliner who lived in Canada. But judging from the feedback, I'm glad I kept the tapes, digitized them and posted. I know when I came back about 10 years ago for a month I could hardly identify with the "new" Berlin

@Manfred Ziegenhagen: at time code 18:27 of video, is it "Berlin-Lichtenberg" Station? (Sorry for my English)
@SpielbaerLP7 ай бұрын
Yes i grew up a little more to the east in Marzahn around that time, used to travel with my parents from that station to my grandparents and i can remember the center piece on the plattform that is a little hard to see here. If i would have to bet i would say Lichtenberg.

At 8:25, what did he say "Zugfertigmeldung"-man?
@SpielbaerLP7 ай бұрын
He said "Ahrensfelde Zurückbleiben" Ahrensfelde being the final station of the line basically the direction (has not changed since then). Zurückbleiben means stay back (from the soon to be departing train).

And what really did East Germany in was when Mikhail Gorbachev told Honecker, its leader that they were on their own. In other word was that the Soviet military basically were onlookers, nothing more.
