Depends on what part of LA you’re in. Some parts of LA are pleasant to live in but East LA and the south central area (Watts and Compton) are areas you want to avoid because of gangs. Especially at night. After the LA riots in 1992 the LAPD did a lot of community outreach programs to try and help curb the gang problem. That’s one reason why the area’s name was changed from “south central” to south LA. But everybody will always remember what happened in those areas especially between the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. It was a hotbed for crack cocaine dealing and nightly drive by shootings. The nightly news at 10 o clock in the LA area at that time was known as the “murder news.” Just watch Boyz N the Hood. It’ll show you exactly what life in the area was like back then. The “Skid Row” area downtown can be bad because the area is filled with a bunch of homelessness, transients, and drug activity. But other than that you’re pretty much safe man. Just be aware of your surroundings and you’ll be fine.
