Every country has its own story, and within that story are several key people, key dates, key events that ultimately shaped its destiny. Well, for China, September 18th, 1931 was certainly one of those days. In fact, the current state of affairs, and the deep-rooted anger that still exists within the majority of Chinese people can be traced to that very date. Sure, there were things going on before and the worst of the events happened years after that date, but the events that transpired on that day are what set the trajectory for things that were to come. What has been come to know by most in the Western world as 'The Mukden Incident' took place when Japanese soldiers who were in northeastern China staged an attack on the South Manchuria Railway in Shenyang City (called Mukden, or Shengjing at the time) and blamed it on the Chinese. They used this as a pretense for their invasion into China to take full control of Manchuria. They occupied the area until 1945, when the Second World War ended. The events that took place in China during those years - the atrocities and bloodshed - are some of the worst in recorded human history and will never be forgotten, especially by the Chinese.
In this video, I go on a journey to find the place where this initial spark took place - whether you refer to it as 九一八事变, 沈阳事变, The September 18 Incident, 満州事変, or as most of us know it 'The Mukden Incident' - the unfortunate series of events that unfolded there were the same. So come with me as we once again trudge down the blood-stained trails of history, talk about what WAS then, and what IS now.
